Set in the mid-1970s and reflecting the complexities of that turbulent decade, Bill Brand stars Jack Shepherd (Wycliffe) as a newly elected left-of-centre Labour MP who struggles to reconcile socialist principles with the realpolitik of Westminster. This groundbreaking and unashamedly intelligent drama series is penned by Oscar-nominated dramatist Trevor Griffiths (Fatherland, Reds), and earned a BAFTA nomination for Jack Shepherd. A by-election in the solidly working-class constituency of Leighley sees Bill Brand, a former lecturer, elected to Parliament by a slim majority. Driven by a determination to improve the lives of his textile-worker constituents, he finds his ideas of representation are provocatively different from those of the whips; and in a world of oblique negotiations and hidden bargains - the uncomfortable realities of a minority government - Brand's fundamental belief in the Party is assailed by doubts, while his troubled personal life further endangers his tenuous political career.
Filmed at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in early 1982, this concert showcases the late Teddy Pendergrass at the peak of his powers only a short time before the tragic road accident in March 1982 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. The show is a classic Pendergrass blend of energetic soul floor fillers and steamy, sensuous ballads all delivered in his inimitable growling baritone. Having first come to fame with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in the early seventies, Pendergrass went solo in 1976 and enjoyed a string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles, many of which are included here. Teddy Pendergrass died in January 2010 but this DVD serves as a reminder of what a hugely talented singer and performer he was. Golden Earring are probably the most famous and certainly the most successful rock band ever to come out of Holland. Founded as a pop band in 1961, they moved to a hard rock style in the late sixties and since 1970 have had an unchanged line-up. This concert was filmed for the German TV series Rockpalast at the Sartory-Sle in Cologne in June 1982. The band were riding high on the back of their US top 10 single “Twilight Zone”, which had hit the charts earlier in the year. The setlist covers the full range of Golden Earring material from all out rockers to melodic ballads and the show proves what an outstanding live act they were and still remain. This DVD was filmed at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle on 25 October 1992 during the Rockoon tour. Rick James was a true larger than life character, as famous for his electric live performances as he was for the trouble he got into off stage. He arrived on the Motown label in the late seventies and reinvigorated the company with a string of hit singles and albums and his outrageous style and personality. This concert filmed for the German TV series Rockpalast came on the back of his multi-platinum selling 1981 album “Street Songs” which contained what would become his signature track “Super Freak”, later converted by MC Hammer into the global hit “U Can’t Touch This”. Rick James died at the age of just 56 in August 2004. We will probably never see his like again but this DVD shows just what an amazing live performer he was.
