A brutal bloody and gripping saga of obsession corruption and poisonous greed; Paul Thomas Anderson's Award Winning There Will Be Blood is a masterly unwavering inspection of a consummately evil man whose trailblazing spirit is equalled only by his murderous ambition. In the dying years of the nineteenth century Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) a struggling silver miner realises that true wealth lies in oil extraction. Driven by a passionate hatred for others and an intense psychological need to see competitors fail he heads for the oil-rich land of California in a bid to manipulate and exploit the landowners of dust-worn Little Boston in to selling him their properties. Forefront of the town is self-styled `faith healer' Eli Sunday (Paul Dano) who is structuring his own sinister plan to funnel the residents' impending wealth into his self-founded church. As Plainview's empire expands so does his obsession with the intrinsic value of power and he becomes increasingly irascible and paranoid along the way. What follows is a vindictive ruthless and violent chain of events as Plainview fails to deliver on promises as he pits himself against the town's perturbed and unstable charismatic teenage preacher. In addition to stunning visuals and an exceptional captivating score from accomplished composer (and Radiohead guitarist) Jonny Greenwood director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia) owes his best work to date to the incredible Academy Award winning performance as Plainview by Daniel Day-Lewis and the staggering portrayal of Eli Sunday by Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Bearing similarities to Citizen Kane and Giant There Will Be Blood is an intelligent thought-provoking and powerfully-eccentric epic masterpiece that is as enchanting as it is timeless.

Chaos lurks in every corner of this giddily off-kilter foray into romantic comedy by PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON (There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights). Struggling to cope with his erratic temper, novelty toilet plunger salesman Barry Egan (ADAM SANDLER, demonstrating remarkable versatility in his first dramatic role) spends his days collecting frequent-flyer-mile coupons and dodging the insults of his seven sisters. The promise of a new life emerges when Barry inadvertently attracts the affections of a mysterious woman named Lena (EMILY WATSON), but their budding relationship is threatened when he falls prey to the swindling operator of a phone sex line and her deranged boss (played with maniacal brio by PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN). Fuelled by the careening momentum of a baroque futurist score by JON BRION (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Magnolia), the Cannes-award-winning Punch-Drunk Love channels the spirit of classic Hollywood musicals and the whimsy of Jacques Tati into an idiosyncratic ode to the delirium of new romance.

  • Boogie Nights [DVD] [1997]Boogie Nights | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £6.95   |  Saving you £0.04 (0.58%)   |  RRP £6.99

Even if the notorious 1970s porn-filmmaking milieu doesn't exactly turn you on, don't let it turn you off to this movie's extraordinary virtues, either. Boogie Nights is one of the key movies of the 1990s and among the most ambitious and exuberantly alive American movies in years. It's also the breakthrough for an amazing new director, whose dazzling kaleidoscopic style here recalls the Robert Altman of Nashville and the Martin Scorsese of Good Fellas. Although loosely based on the sleazy life and times of real-life porn legend John Holmes, at heart it's a classic Hollywood rise-and-fall fable: a naive, good-looking young busboy is discovered in a San Fernando Valley disco by a famous motion picture producer, becomes a hotshot movie star, lives the high life and then loses everything when he gets too big for his britches, succumbs to insobriety and is left behind by new times and new technology. Of course, it isn't exactly A Star Is Born or Singin' in the Rain. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (in only his second feature!) puts his own affectionately sardonic twist on the old showbiz biopic formula: the ambitious upstart changes his name and achieves stardom in porno films as "Dirk Diggler." Instead of drinking to excess, he snorts cocaine (the classic drug of 70s hedonism); and it's the coming of home video (rather than talkies) that helps to dash his big-screen dreams. As for the britches ... well, the controversial "money shot" explains everything. And the cast is one of the great ensembles of the 90s, including Oscar nominees Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore, Mark Wahlberg (who really can act--from the waist up, too!), Heather Graham (as Rollergirl), William H. Macy, John C. Reilly and Ricky Jay. --Jim Emerson

Pretty boy Billy (Jude Law) is an amoral rebel without a cause. His anarchic response to a bleak London existence is to steal cars and drive them through shop windows: "crash and carry," as one fellow "shopper" terms it. But he and his tough, video-game obsessed gal-pal Jo (Sadie Frost) are no Bonnie and Clyde. Their shopping trips are merely a pretext for the adrenaline rush of destruction and the thrill of playing high-speed tag with the cops, a game that starts to wear thin on Jo. "Why don't you grow up, eh?" she finally asks. "And do what?" he helplessly replies. The feature debut of Brit stylist Paul Anderson (Event Horizon) is a sleek film of misty alleys, blue-lit underground garages, and slick city streets. It's a dystopian London of the near future through the lens of Blade Runner driven almost single-handedly by Law's reckless charm and wild energy. It's hard to tell if the film is about the nihilism of sensation-hunting lost youth or simply a sensational melodrama of aimless rebellion, but there's nonetheless something irresponsibly appealing in Billy's anti-establishment rampage. --Sean Axmaker

  • Alien vs Predator (Single Disc Edition) [2004]Alien vs Predator (Single Disc Edition) | DVD | (07/03/2005) from £4.50   |  Saving you £11.49 (255.33%)   |  RRP £15.99

In delivering non-18-rated excitement, Alien vs. Predator is an acceptably average science-fiction action thriller with some noteworthy highlights, even if it squanders its opportunity to intelligently combine two popular franchises. Rabid fans can justifiably ask "Is that all there is?" after a decade of development hell and eager anticipation, but we're compensated by reasonably logical connections to the Alien legacy and the still-kicking Predator franchise (which hinted at AVP rivalry at the end of Predator 2); some cleverly claustrophobic sets, tense atmosphere and impressive digital effects; and a climactic AVP smackdown that's not half bad. This disposable junk should've been better, but nobody who's seen Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil should be surprised by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's lack of imagination. As a brisk, 90-minute exercise in generic thrills, however, Anderson's work is occasionally impressive... right up to his shameless opening for yet another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

“Inherent Vice ” an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s seventh and funniest novel is the seventh film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson—and the very first film adaptation ever of Pynchon’s legendarily inventive culturally kaleidoscopic work. A surf noir the story dives headlong into the smoky haze and neon afterglow of the American counterculture via a psychedelic spin on the classic detective yarn. When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well easy for her to say. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic '60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment like “trip” or “groovy ” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble. With a cast of characters that includes surfers hustlers dopers and rockers a murderous loan shark LAPD detectives a tenor sax player working undercover and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists...it’s part California noir part hallucinogenic romp and an all-out cinematic homage to a Pynchonian world of far-out characters dead-on insights and deep yearning.
