Filmed in Vancouver Canada in 1982 this DVD captures Jefferson Starship at the height of their powers on a set comprising of hits from both Jefferson Starship and Jefferson Airplane and with tracks linked by Shortwave Mike your friendly alien presenter. Founded by Paul Kantner from the ashes of Jefferson Airplane Jefferson Starship went on to scale even greater commercial heights than its illustrious predecessor. Later the departure of Airplane vocalist Grace Slick and founder Paul Kantner would lead to the creation of the more soft rock orientated Starship but here in 1982 Jefferson Starship are at their creative peak. Tracklist: 1. Introduction 2. Winds Of Change 3. Ride The Tiger 4. Stranger 5. Black Widow 6. Find Your Way Back 7. Somebody To Love 8. Be My Lady 9. Girl With The Hungry Eyes 10. Out Of Control 11. This trio of piano grandmaster Herbie Hancock, bass legend Ron Carter and fusion drummer par excellence Billy Cobham gets branded "jazz-rock" by the booklet-note writer in World of Rhythm--Live. Well, perhaps such a description might have fitted when the form first came to prominence as the first wave of hard bop was dissipating, but these days this just comes across as a very, very good straightahead jazz gig. Furthermore, the music sounds as fresh as it no doubt sounded in 1983, when this concert was recorded in Lugano. There are a few meditative passages, but this is mostly crisp, assertive stuff, with Cobham's snappy boogaloo style propelling the proceedings along. Look out, though, for a short interlude of nearly free improvisation, which seems to come as a pleasant surprise to the band as much as to the audience. On the DVD: Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Billy Cobham's World of Rhythm--Live is reasonably well-served by this DVD release. The 4:3 ratio picture is accompanied by stereo and surround options, plus a small extra text-only biographical feature. Overall, though, the sheer quality of both sound and vision makes any extras seem superfluous. --Roger Thomas
Bombast was always a part of Jefferson Starship. The group's chunky, muscular riffing through the 1970s and 80s made them a rock powerhouse in a way that their earlier incarnation, the Jefferson Airplane, was never meant to be. But in the few years that Marty Balin joined two of his mates from the Airplane, Paul Kantner and Grace Slick, for its retooled edition, bombast was mitigated by a ripened sensuality and other pleasures. Between Balin's splendid love songs, Slick's sassy attitude, Kantner's lyrical castles in the sky and guitarist Craig Chaquico's prankish versatility, the Starship was a fun, sexy, uplifting outfit. By 1983, however, with Balin long gone, Kantner on the way out and shrill vocalist Mickey Thomas in the mix, the Starship looked and sounded like an anachronism. Sadly, that's what we have here on The Definitive Concert. Thomas seems to be screeching at a single frequency on "Winds of Change" and "Out of Control", while Slick spends much of the time delivering a wide-eyed stare into the camera that seemed trippy enough in 1967, but here looks insistent and vain. On the plus side, Slick's chilling power on "White Rabbit" is something to behold, and Kantner leads the band in a rousing, snaky rendition of "Ride the Tiger". But, for the most part, this "definitive concert" is a woeful reminder of better days.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Blues In The ClosetThe elegance feeling and virtuosity which made KENNY DREW a major distinctive figure among modern jazz pianists is to be found in abundance at this concert from July 1992 in England - just a year before his death. These characteristic qualities of Kenny Drew's musicianship are further enhanced by this exciting opportunity to see the performance as well as hear it.Accompanying Drew are two exceptional musicians who match his demanding standards of the musical excellence and with whom he also found a deep musical rapport. The pianist's close professional partnership (and personal friendship) with the legendary Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen dates back to the mid-60s when Kenny first settled in Copenhagen. Master drummer Alvin Queen joined Kenny and NHOP in 1989 giving a further boost to the music and rounding out one of the most prominent jazz trios of the 90's.The seven pieces performed at the Brewhouse had been in the trio's book for many years and were among the musician's favourite compositions. Not only are they interpreted with complete assurance and evident enjoyment but the trio also takes the opportunity to stretch out and live dangerously in a setting without possibility for edits or overdubs. We're doubly lucky today to be able to 'attend' what was not only a great concert but also - in retrospect - a historic event according to NHOP 'It was ' he recalls 'the last time I played with Kenny when he was really at the top of his form'.
JAZZ LEGENDS: Jazz Life Volume 2:The two groups are recorded live at the Seventh At Avenue South club in N.Y.C. Art Blakey started as a professional musician with Fletcher Henderson and Mary Lou Williams in the years 1939-1941. He had his own band in Boston and was later with Billy Eckstine and Buddy De Franco before he started his first jazz Messenger Group with Horace Silver in 1954. When he left Silver he kept the name and had The Jazz Messengers for five decades. During this time some of the most important musicians in modern jazz were members of the Messengers. Donald Byrd Kenny Dorham Lee Morgan Freddie Hubbard Woody Shaw Wynton Marsalis and Terence Blanchard (tp); Curtis Fuller (tb); Lou Donaldson Jackie McLean (as); Benny Golson Wayne Shorter Johnny Griffin and Branford Marsalis (ts); Bobby Timmons Chick Corea Keith Jarrett and Mulgrew Miller (p). The highlight of this video is Wynton Marsalis' rendition of 'My Ship' which definitely dispels the notion of many critics who say that Marsalis is all technique and no soul.Mike Mainieri began to play vibraphone at the age of 12 inspired by Lionel Hampton. When he was 17 years old he played with Buddy Rich and became his arranger and musical leader. Later he earned his living as a studio musician in New York. He has recorded with Jeremy Steig Buddy Rich Sonny Stitt and Art Farmer. He was one of the musicians who formed the extremely successful group Steps in 1979 later called Steps Ahead - STEVE SCHEIN 2000.* Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers - From Seventh At Avenue South1. Gil Evans and his Orchestra captures the great jazz pianist in concert at the Palazzo dei Congressi, Lugano on January 27, 1983. Aged 70 at the time, Evans shows no sign of flagging invention as, accompanied by his 18-piece big band, he traverses 10 numbers in just under an hour. Indeed, the 57-minute running length gives away that the concert is a version edited to fill an hour television slot; it would have been nice to have the full gig restored for DVD. Otherwise this is a fine show, with Evans fronting such luminaries as Billy Cobham, drums; Mike Mainieri, vibes; and Michael and Randy Brecker, tenor sax and trumpet respectively. Numbers are evenly divided between Evans originals, from an expansive 10-minute introductory workout on "Hotel Me", to a "Waltz" in duple time to a selection of standards. Thelonious Monk's "Friday the 13th" is ingeniously deconstructed and never quite put back together, Gershwin's "The Honey Man" is reborn in decidedly funky guise. Inevitably Evans finds room for some Hendrix, "Stone Free" making the cut with some glorious playing by John Clark on French horn. This is essential for Evans aficionados and a more than solid introduction to a jazz master for those who wish to get to know his music. On the DVD: Gil Evans and his Orchestra on disc has a 4:3 picture that is very good for a live, shot on video concert film, with only some soft focus long shots and "trails" on panning shots across lights revealing the limitations of the original footage. The sound is available in good PCM stereo, very good 5.1 Dolby Digital and excellent 5.1 DTS. This latter soundtrack offers superb detail and presence combined with a subtle three-dimensional ambience. Extras are a basic text biography of Evans and eight trailers for TDK jazz DVDs.--Gary S Dalkin
