Gil Evans one of the most notable arrangers and composers of the 20th century lent his conducting talents to jazz great Miles Davis (creating the landmark Birth of Cool) and played with the ""Who's Who"" of jazz history. From collaborating with Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley to Art Blakey and Gerry Mulligan Evans' name is synonymous with jazz excellence. In this exclusive concert performance on DVD Gil Evans leads an all-star band which includes Randy and Michael Brecker Billy Cobham Lew Soloff and Mike Manieri. Song selections include Hotel Me Stone Free Here Comes de Honey Man Friday the 13th and more.
Featured in the first part of 'Birdmen and Birdsongs' is an all-star line up of musicians who actually shared the stage with Bird during his lifetime. Saxophonist FRANK MORGAN is a commanding musician who is currently enjoying much acclaim.Following Morgan is trumpet player RED RODNEY whose own life along with that of Parker's was celebrated in Clint Eastwood film 'Bird' Rodney fresh from triumphs in the United States and Japan joins with Morgan to recreate some of the classic Charlie Parker/Dizzie Gillespie musical ballads. The results are more than nostalgia. In fact this pairing proves the greatest music of yesterday is still some of the greatest music today. Supporting these jazz giants is an all-star rhythm section featuring drummer ROY HAYNES who was Bird's favourite rhythm keeper during the 1950's. Jamaican born pianist MONTY ALEXANDER was featured in the Eastwood movie and RUFUS REID is one of the most articulate and propulsive bass players around.Recorded in January 1990 in Palais des Festivals Cannes.1.
