Ancient Worlds is a six-part odyssey from the first cities of Mesopotamia to the Christianisation of the Roman Empire with archaeologist and historian Richard Miles at the helm. The series tells the story of what Richard argues is mankind's greatest achievement - civilisation. The series offers an epic sweep of history against a panorama of stunning locations and bold propositions about the origins of human society. In the 21st century we might fondly imagine that it is humankind's natural state to live together in communities that extend beyond blood ties. As Ancient Worlds sets out to show however no such assumptions were made by the first clan chiefs who decided to form communities in southern Iraq in 4500 BC. There is nothing natural about the city and its founders understood that its very survival relied on compromise ruthlessness sacrifice and toil. In the West we have consigned the term 'civilisation' to the museum display case. Embarrassed by its chauvinistic and elitist connotations we have increasingly taken refuge in more politically correct and soft-focused terms such as 'culture' to explain our origins. This series seeks to rescue civilisation from its enforced retirement and celebrate such a hard-fought invention.

  • Ute Lemper - The Thousand And One Lives Of Ute Lemper - A Trilingual Portrait [1998]Ute Lemper - The Thousand And One Lives Of Ute Lemper - A Trilingual Portrait | DVD | (21/01/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The Thousand and One Lives of Ute Lemper, Valerie Esposito's 1998 documentary on the idiosyncratic singer and actress, is a fascinating study of an uncompromising performer who defies categorisation. Every facet of her career is represented here: the award-winning musical star of Chicago; the cabaret artist who sinks her teeth into Weill like nobody since Lenya; the avant-garde pop singer who has worked with modern composers from Elvis Costello to Philip Glass; and the muse who inspired Michael Nyman to write her a song cycle. But Lemper can be an acquired taste. She works at show songs with an intensity and individuality that set her apart from mainstream musical actors. The result can be so stylised that the emotional truth she strives for becomes self-conscious and even disengaged. There are some unanswered questions here--why, for example, does she no longer have any contact with Nyman?--but elsewhere her frankness in discussing her influences and her approach to work combines with the glimpses of her family life to provide a useful portrait of this extremely modern, versatile show woman. On the DVD: The Thousand and One Lives of Ute Lemper is presented in 4:3 picture format and has the quality of a top-class television production. The PCM stereo sound reproduces the various textures of Lemper's live and recorded work to good effect. There are no extras but the booklet notes are comprehensive. The running time stated on the cover is misleading: 145 minutes is actually the combined total of the English, German and French versions of the documentary.--Piers Ford

This is the incredibly powerful story of the Stalin years. It is based on rarely seen archival footage, contemporary diaries and documents and personal memoirs, as well as interviews with relatives and those people who survived the Gulag labour camps and World War II. It follows the events from Stalin's rise to power, his association with Hitler and the Soviet involvement in the Second World War right through to his death. First regarded as a visionary, it soon became apparent that Stalin was a capricious, ruthless tyrant who would arrange for the ‘removal’ of anyone he thought was opposing him. For nearly 30 years, he maintained power without challenge by manipulating his people through propaganda, state sponsored lies and terror. In this tremendously moving and at times graphic, harrowing and shocking documentary, we witness the suffering and sacrifices of the people of the Soviet Union and discover what led to the death of millions of Soviet citizens during the Great Patriotic War.
