In days gone by death came at close quarters. This was a time when warriors stood toe-to-toe with their enemy; when battlefields were confused hell holes where men hacked desperately at each other; where no mercy was expected and none was given. This series explores the realities of taking a crushing blow from a battle axe or being hit by a deadly arrow from a longbow. The experience of facing mortar and artillery fire; or of attacking into a hail of bullets from muskets or machine guns. Instruments of Death place some of history's deadliest weapons in your hands. Through a series of innovative tests and modern experiments you'll see at first hand the effects of the blade and the bullet on a human being. You'll find out how just effective shields armour and helmets actually were. And how the wounds suffered by ordinary soldiers were treated on the battlefield. This is a fascinating and immersive look at the stark truth of yesterday's wars - a world far away from statistics and numbers and co-ordinates - and demonstrates the dangers faced by those who were sent into battle to do or die. World in Action was, undoubtedly, ITV's flagship current affairs show. Over four decades (from the '60s to the '90s) this multiple BAFTA winner was fearless, hard-hitting and trailblazing, choosing subjects that other programmes would not dare touch, getting into trouble with ITV regulators and - at times - the Government. A cornerstone of the British viewing schedule, the WIA team investigated stories at no small personal risk to themselves and often courted controversy whilst reporting on organisations such as the National Front. This report is included here, along with editions that cover everything from euthanasia to Scientology, from the Miners' Strike to extended coverage of the underhanded practices of the CIA in the 1970s.

Review for Founding Brothers:The political wrangles of a fledgling country may sound dull compared to the drama of a war, but the early history of the United States only gets more fascinating as the Revolutionary War is left behind. Founding Brothers, a documentary from the History Channel, examines the struggle to not only establish democracy, but to give it the economic strength and governmental structure that will allow it to survive and thrive. George Washington grappled not only with politics, but with questions of style and propriety--how should a president, as opposed to a king, behave? Understanding the conflicts between Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson will illuminate ideas that have shaped the government of the U.S. ever since. Founding Brothers provides a wealth of portraits and illustrations from the time, as well as discreet dramatizations, that bring the rise of party politics to life, humanizing these historical figures with tales of the scandals and squabbles they faced as well as their political achievements. An excellent introduction to the roots of the American experiment, and a bracing illustration of what Jefferson meant when he said of the presidency, "No man will bring out of that office the reputation which carried him into it." --Bret Fetzer

Seemingly anti-social Manny a woolly mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano) acts as if he just wants to be left alone. When he meets Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo) a sloth the two become unlikely traveling companions. Ultimately this group of misfits becomes its own herd learning about friendship and loyalty as they brave snow ice freezing temperatures predators hail and even boiling lava pits. Crime Inc. is a documentary series about the Mafia, produced in the mid-1980s by Thames Television. It's fascinating to observe how the intervening years have led the issuing company of this complete release of all seven episodes down the road of the cheapest and nastiest sensationalism: "MEET THE REAL GOODFELLAS" yells the front cover of the two-disc set at its presumably dumbed-down target market, while the back cover shows a string of silly press quotes. The irony is that, for anyone interested in the history of organised crime or in any aspect of the dark undercurrents which pervade American and European society, such lowbrow tactics are completely unnecessary. For Crime Inc. is a good, solid, properly budgeted and carefully researched series, dating from when such things were what viewers could expect as a matter of course. Much of the fascination of the series stems from the fact that the producers have used as much primary source material as possible, including original archive footage and interviews (many presumably conducted in jail) with defectors from the cause. The most startling revelation, oddly enough, has nothing to do with the secrecy, extortion and torture employed by the organisation--after all, there are plenty of legitimised governments throughout the world who routinely use the same tactics--rather, it's the statement, made very early on, that until informants started going public US police forces would simply deny the fact that the Mafia even existed. Remarkable stuff. On the DVD: Crime Inc. has no extra features, but with six hours of running time this is hardly cause for complaint. It is presented in standard 4:3 ratio. --Roger Thomas
