Three generations of rock guitarists come together for It Might Get Loud, a 2009 documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth). These are not just your garden-variety guitar gods: Jimmy Page, in his mid-'60s at the time of the film, founded Led Zeppelin, who dominated the 1970s following the breakup of the Beatles. As a member of U2, 48-year-old David Evans, better known as the Edge, created one of the most distinctive and influential sounds of the past quarter century. And 34-year-old Jack White (of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather) was described by one music publication as "the most significant rock 'n' roll figure of the past ten years." Guggenheim, who followed the three around for the better part of a year, takes us into their individual lives, past and present. There are shots of Page as a young London session musician, with the Yardbirds and Zeppelin, at Headley Grange (the estate where much of the fourth Zep album was made), and at home with his record collection. The Edge takes us to the Dublin classroom where U2 first rehearsed, as well as to the practice room he uses now (never a virtuoso soloist, he developed a style based on texture and a mind-boggling array of effects); and White, whose insistence on authenticity is admirable but perhaps a tad self-conscious, constructs a "guitar" from a plank of wood, a piece of wire, and a Coke bottle (he also plays a recording by the primitive bluesman Son House, featuring just voice and handclaps, that White says is still his biggest inspiration). The three also converge on a Hollywood sound stage, where they chat and a do a little jamming on Zep's "In My Time of Dying" (with all three playing slide guitar) and the Band's "The Weight." It's hard to say if the film's appeal will extend beyond guitar freaks and fans of these particular bands, but at the very least, It Might Get Loud offers some interesting insight into the soul and inspiration behind some of pop's best and most popular music. --Sam Graham
Crimes That Shook Britain (2 Discs)
In 1990 a group of dedicated people came together with a vision of what seemed an unachievable task. They were united by an extraordinary ambition - to construct a brand new steam engine and to bring back to life the Peppercorn class A1 Pacific. After 18 years of incredible effort and teamwork their dream became a reality when locomotive No. 60163 Tornado moved under its own power for the first time. This BBC programme tells the story of an amazing tale of cooperation skill and sheer hard graft by men who defied the critics who had said it could never be done. Such an achievement did not go unnoticed and Tornado soon became a celebrity in its own right. Wherever it has ventured it has attracted crowds of people. Thousands turn out to wave and cheer. Children are hoisted aloft. Men hang from bridges and stand on car roofs. Enthusiasts wait hours in muddy fields for a fleeting view. At King's Cross throngs blocked the platforms and when it blew a cloud of steam over the Duchess of Cornwall in York the Prince of Wales burst out laughing. Indeed in its short life Tornado has been a film star splashed across newspaper pages and filmed in action by the many loyal enthusiasts who waited years to see their train on Britain's main lines again. It was the star of an episode of 'Top Gear' in a classic challenge race from London to Edinburgh with Jeremy Clarkson on the shovel. Beautifully shot and produced by the BBC this DVD takes the story on with new extra footage never before seen on TV. A delight not only for fans of steam trains but for anyone who admires a skill and determination that is steeped in the great British tradition.
This is a feature-length, 106-minute documentary which presents in refreshingly straightforward fashion a portrait of 20th-century piano playing. The format is simple: short chapters on virtually all of the great pianists who have ever been captured on film, augmented by extracts from interviews, sometimes with the pianists themselves, or with later conductors and musicians of international stature, including specially filmed contributions from Daniel Barenboim, Sir Colin Davis, Egveny Kissin, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, Tamás Vásáry. The narration by John Tusa offers an overview of piano music through the century, though the heart of the film is the great quantity of rare archive historic footage, with extracts from performances by Gould, Horowitz, Paderwski, Rachmaninov, Richter, Rubinstein and many others. The interviews are short, but offer considerable insight, while the film of so many revered pianists brought together is a literal eye-opener, especially for those who have previously only known these masters from LP and CD. This is, like the companion programme The Art of Singing, as close to definitive as can a single film can get, even going so far as to include footage from the "silent" era with sound from corresponding recordings. On the DVD: There are no special features, though the booklet provides a useful, very detailed chapter breakdown, an overview of the film, photographs and short biographies of many of the pianists. Because all the archive footage was shot that way, the film is presented in 4:3 television ratio. The archive material varies considerably in picture and sound quality, ranging as it does from early black and white to colour television video footage, all in mono. The new interviews are letterboxed within the 4:3 frame and are in colour and stereo. --Gary S. Dalkin

As seen on the UK History Channel. This documentary programme looks at the modern monarchy with the longest ruling royal in history Queen Victoria. From her accession to the throne in 1837 to her death in 1901 Victoria was to reign for 64 years. In contrast Edward VII her successor was to be king for only 10 years; a reign that led up to the current house of Windsor. Although the days of the empire are long over here you have an informative record of a period which experienced huge political and social reform and one which took us through two World Wars. In addition to expert analysis by Alan Ereira this documentary is complimented with atmospheric re-enactments throughout.

Flying the Avro Lancaster is the fourth programme from the Classic Cockpit series which accompanies Flying the De Havilland Vampire DC-3 and PBY Catalina. Derived from the twin-engine Avro Manchester the Lancaster was designed for one purpose; to carry bombs. Its bomb bay was stressed to take more than twenty thousand pounds of high explosive. Powered by four Rolls Royce engines it carried enough fuel to take it deep into the German heartland destroying cities and wreaking havoc on Hitler's heavy industries. The Lancaster is probably best known for the famous 'Dam Busters Raid' in May 1943 when aircraft of the RAF's 617 Squadron attacked the M''hne Eder Sorpe and Ennepe dams in the Ruhr using the revolutionary 'bouncing bomb' designed by Dr Barnes Wallis. In this documentary film the Lancaster is flown from its base at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum at Hamilton Ontario by Don Schofield a retired Air Canada captain. After a detailed cockpit tour and pre-flight inspection we join the crew for some local flying in the Hamilton area. Multiple cameras provide detailed coverage in the cockpit while cameras in accompanying B-25 Harvard and Bell Jetranger provide spectacular aerial prospective
