On August 15 1965 56 000 fans came to celebrate the Beatles at the opening show for their third US tour. The first open air concert ever played at New York's Shea Stadium was attended by the largest concert audience recorded up to that time. Photographer Bob Whitaker described the state of emergency in NYC during the arrival of the Fab Four as follows: The journey to Shea had to be organized like a military operation. We flew by helicopter from the top of the Pan-Am building in Manhattan and transferred to an armoured Wells Fargo truck near the stadium. It had no windows and the kids were hammering on the outside and rocking it. The noise was deafening the screaming and screeching was really terrifying. At one stage we thought the truck was going to tip over and we were all going to get dragged out and torn to pieces. Promoter Sid Bernstein remembers: I guess we didn't care too much about sound trouble. You couldn't hear much of what the Beatles were singing anyway because the kids were screaming their lungs out all the way. There was incredible screeching all over when emotions went haywire. It was all about taking part! This was a historic moment for the kids and for all of us who were involved with the show. To be there meant to be a part of history.Apart from the live recording this DVD contains a documentary film about the concert and an interview with the Beatles about their impressions of that extraordinary event. When this epic series was first broadcast in 1973 it redefined the gold standard for television documentary; it remains the benchmark by which all factual programming must judge itself. Originally shown as 26 one-hour programmes, The World at War set out to tell the story of the Second World War through the testimony of key participants. The result is a unique and unrepeatable event, since many of the eyewitnesses captured on film did not have long left to live. Each hour-long programme is carefully structured to focus on a key theme or campaign, from the rise of Nazi Germany to Hitler's downfall and the onset of the Cold War. There are no academic "talking heads" here to spell out an official version of history; the narration, delivered with wonderful gravitas by Sir Laurence Olivier, is kept to a minimum. The show's great coup was to allow the participants to speak for themselves. Painstaking research in the archives of the Imperial War Museum also unearthed a vast quantity of newsreel footage, including on occasion the cameraman's original raw rushes which present an unvarnished and never-before-seen picture of important events. Carl Davis' portentous main title theme and score underlines the grand scale of the enterprise. The original 26 episodes were supplemented three years later by six special programmes (narrated by Eric Porter), bringing the total running-time to a truly epic 32 hours. Now digitally remastered The World at War looks even more of an impressive achievement on DVD. Available in five volumes, each handsomely packaged double-disc set comes with a detailed menu that places the individual programmes along a chronological timeline. Better yet, chapter access is laid out to allow you to select key speeches or maps or newsreel footage. The World at War was a landmark television event; its DVD incarnation underlines its importance as an historical document. --Mark Walker

Armies could no longer manoeuvre without being seen - and the era of trench warfare began. At first rival pilots regarded each other as brothers. but the desperate need to knock out the enemy 'eye in the sky' led to the swift development of the first fighter aircraft. The Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales was originally constructed to convey slate from the quarries in Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog. The line was built on a steep incline to facilitate the use of gravity trains. In 1863 the increase in traffic forced the owner to consider different forms of motive power. After many trials and much development work a special design of locomotive incorporating power bogies took to the narrow gauge rails. During the Spring of 1988 the railway celebrated 125 years of steam power with a gala weekend spanning 3 glorious days which saw the return to service of the newly restored Fairlie double engine Merddin Emrys vintage trains hauled by Prince visiting W.H.R. Locomotive Russell and much more besides. Our cameras were there to record the event in full and this film produced in conjunction with and the full cooperation of the Ffestiniog Railway Society includes exclusive footage shot on the double headed run up the line with Blanche and Mountaineer.
