D-Day Heroes focuses on the fiercest fighting on D-Day with the pick of combat footage from archives around the world film of the battlefields today and vivid chilling first hand accounts from Normandy veterans. As well as combat on the beaches D-Day Heroes features many of the perilous support operations where despite often terrible losses Allied troops somehow managed to seize their objectives. It was their heroism and self-sacrifice which ultimately made D-Day a success.
Coventry, known as the birthplace of the British motor industry and one of the major manufacturing centres of the industrial Midlands, suffered terrible German bombing during the Second World War. This culminated in a devastating raid in November 1940. Hundreds of people died and thousands of homes and buildings were completely destroyed. Rebuilding Coventry tells the story of how the city rose phoenix-like from the ashes. Using both amateur and professional footage spanning from 1948 to 1980, these short films have been researched, narrated and produced by Zara Healy from the University of Lincoln's School of Media. The production is collaboration between MACE and the School of Media at the University of Lincoln and is one of a series 9 DVD titles celebrating the screen heritage of the Midlands. It has been made possible by the generous financial support of EM Media through the UK Film Council's Digital Film Archive Fund. Look back at memorable milestones in the city's history, including a visit from the Queen as a young Princess to the War Memorial Park. The development of Coventry's new Cathedral, the Broadgate development and the Precinct are all documented. The building of local landmarks like the Coventry Baths, the Ring Road and Walsgrave Hospital can also be seen. The story of Coventry's flourishing car industry, once the envy of the world, is highlighted, featuring the production lines at Jaguar, Standard Triumph and Chrysler. You can relive memories of when celebrities like Douglas Bader, Bill Haley and Morecambe and Wise visited Coventry and, for the first time ever, the story of Coventry's first Woman Lord Mayor, Pearl Hyde, is told using archive film. In 1879 the Colonial Government of Natal ordered a British army led by General Lord Chelmsford and equipped with the most modern weaponry to invade the Zulu Kingdom. Overconfident and contemptuous of his Zulu adversaries Lord Chelmsford believed that his biggest problem would be in bringing the Zulus to battle. Shortly after crossing the Buffalo River the British column set up camp in the shadow of a Sphinx shaped hill called Isandlwana. The following day Lord Chelmsford with over half his force went in pursuit of what he believed to be the vanguard of the Zulu army.
