A Horse Called NijinskyNijinsky was the most valuable horse in racing history, the fastest horse that England had ever seen and a horse that in one year became a legend. Much of the credit for this horse’s incredible performance had to go to trainer Vincent O’Brien and his team. Nijinsky had an almost faultless heritage and with the right training, it was clear that this horse had incredible potential. Nijinsky’s performance in his first English race at Newmarket was effortless and marked the beginning of an incredible career and with the irrepressible Lester Piggott in the saddle, they appeared truly unbeatable. The Story Of Mill ReefFrom Mill Reef’s debut race at the Salisbury Stakes, which he won by an easy four lengths, it was clear he was an outstanding horse. Time and again he would show himself to be exceptional and many believe that he could have gone on to be the best if he had not been struck by a tragic fall during training which shattered his leg. This programme is not only an accolade to one of the greatest racing horses of all times, it is also a nostalgic trip back in time to the racing world of the 1970s. The Year of Sir IvorSir Ivor was another of world famous trainer Vincent O’Brien’s success stories, and 1968 was his year, with a string of wins to his credit elevating him to championship status. As Derby day approached there was much anticipation and excitement at the yard. Owner Raymond Guest had put a bet on Sir Ivor for the Epsom Derby long before he was showing his worth, he had backed him at 100-to-1 and he stood to win more than 60,000. We re-live the excitement of the Derby as we watch the race unfold and hold our breath as the horses approach the finish line neck and neck. Dancing BraveMany believe the ultimate horse is the pure bred Arab, there can be no finer example of this breed than Dancing Brave, a phenomenal success in the racing world in the 1980s. The performance of this unique and brilliant horse in the 1986 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe was a true testament to his exceptional ability, watching him in action on the race course was electrifying. Dancing Brave will always be remembered not only for his tremendous versatility, but also his astonishing power of acceleration. He epitomized the highest class racehorse. Arkle Portrait of a LegendThis is the incredible story of the greatest and most famous racehorse that has ever lived. Tracing Arkle’s legendary life story from his birth at Ballymacoll Stud, to his death on 31st May 1970. Arkle re-wrote the record books almost every time he took to the racecourse. Featuring all the key races, including his memorable duels with Mill House and interviews with his breeder, Alison Baker, trainer Tom Dreaper and jockey Pat Taaffe and the last ever interview with his owner Anne, Duchess of Westminster. This is a moving tribute to a legend. John Francome’s Legends of Horse RacingJohn Francome is himself a legend of the horse racing world, having been seven-time Champion Jockey during the 1970s and 1980s. In this unique programme he discusses his legends of both the flat and the jumps, counting down from his 10th selection to his ultimate legend. And what a scintillating mix of great horses, the likes of Dancing Brave and Oh So Sharp on the flat and Moscow Flyer and Dawn Run over the jumps. All John’s selections are backed up with fantastic archive footage of the horses, jockeys and trainers in action, to offer a fascinating programme for fans of both the jumps and the flat racing world.

  • Audition / Talent Show (Konkurs)Audition / Talent Show (Konkurs) | DVD | (15/08/2005) from £14.49   |  Saving you £-1.50 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Part one cuts between rehearsals/performance by rival brass bands and the competing attraction of a cross-country motorbike race. Part Two anticipates the audition scenes in Taking Off as a throng of female singers try out for a part in a show. Though originally made as separate featurettes the two episodes form a plausible entity being so similar stylistically and thematically. The approach is documentary with some fictional elements gently interpolated - in the first the defection of two youthful trombonists in the second the lightly sketched backgrounds of two of the singers. Extremely assured for an apprentice work this displays the same mix of shrewdness and tenderness that marked all Forman's early films. But as with many East European movies of this era one suspects that a political allegory is concealed at the heart of it all.
