Escape To River Cottage: It is Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's dream to escape the urban sprawl and find a little place in the country where he can live off the fat of the land. When Hugh finds River Cottage nestling in the heart of the beautiful Dorset countryside he sets about turning his dream into a reality. The first casualty to self-sufficiency is the flower bed which makes way for terracing to grow edible crops. Once the vegetables have been taken care of Hugh sets off in his 1965 Ford Corsair in search of livestock. The first arrivals at the cottage are a pair of eight week old Gloucester Old Spot pigs but more animals soon follow. Hugh also finds time to show how sumptuous meals can be prepared from the local produce be it sea fish pigeons or freshly caught pike. Return To River Cottage: The second series looking at the life of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall who continues to live in River Cottage in Dorset. River Cottage Forever: The rolling hills and rugged countryside of Dorset provide the perfect backdrop for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's experiment to leave the rat race behind to live off the fat of the land. Tucked away at the bottom of one of the county's valleys he finds his ideal home: River Cottage. In his first year Hugh had just the cottage and the garden but he soon found he needed more land so in his second year he did a deal with a neighbour to rent four acres. His smallholding now boasts a polytunnel for growing vegetables fox proof high rise chicken accommodation and pasture for his sheep cows and pigs. It is now the start of his third year and as well as being a time for looking back with joy and satisfaction at the events of the last two years it is a time to ask the really big question: should Hugh stay at River Cottage forever?

  • Alistair Cooke's AmericaAlistair Cooke's America | DVD | (18/10/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £49.99

A classic from what now seems like the Golden Age of TV documentaries, Alistair Cooke’s America was first broadcast in 1972-3 and it remains, along with the contemporary The World at War, an example of how documentaries should be made: there’s none of the flashy editing, wobbly camera-work, over-intrusive music or costumed actors prancing around in the mode of Simon Schama’s fussy History of Britain for example. Here there is just scenery, the odd map or illustration and—most importantly—Cooke himself talking directly and unhurriedly to camera. Over 13 leisurely hours, he narrates a "personal history" of his adopted country, beginning with his own arrival as a fresh young Cambridge graduate in the 1930s before taking us back to the very foundations of America, its colonisation, the war of Independence (told in an admirably non-partisan way) and so on through momentous and turbulent decades right up to the early 1970s, where Civil Rights and protest movements are high on the agenda. Throughout, Cooke interweaves anecdotes and digressions into the main narrative, charming the viewer with his storytelling precisely in the manner so beloved of listeners to his admirable Letter from America. By the end he has a warning that, although delivered in 1973, remains as telling today as it did then: America, like Ancient Rome as depicted by Gibbon in his Decline and Fall, stands poised between its remarkable vitality and its equally remarkable capacity for decadence. Whether, like Rome, the USA becomes a victim of its own internal divisions or somehow manages to pull back from the brink still remains to be seen. On the DVD: This four-disc set is neatly presented in digipack format, and includes a Pebble Mill at One interview with Cooke in which he discusses the series. --Mark Walker

  • BIRTH OF A NATION, THE (Masters of Cinema) (BLU-RAY)BIRTH OF A NATION, THE (Masters of Cinema) (BLU-RAY) | Blu Ray | (29/07/2013) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

One of the most artistically significant and controversial motion pictures ever made D. W. Griffith's silent epic The Birth of a Nation was a massive commercial success at the time of its release owing to its dynamic storytelling and its breakthrough developments in cinema language that have become common traits of practically every film that has since followed. However the picture's legacy is one that continues to elicit outrage over its vulgar depictions of African-Americans and its deceptive historiography of the United States in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Birth of a Nation begins depicting the amiable relationship between two families Northern and Southern and the way in which the impending Civil War intensifies the conflict of their worldviews. Following the end of the war and the assassination of President Lincoln a lawless chaos courses throughout the Reconstruction South and the Ku Klux Klan is formed to take on a rising black militia and impose a vengeful vigilante justice across their land and birthright. It's a film that's deeply divisive even to the senses of a single viewer: images of painterly beauty in composition and tonal quality often exhibit a contemptuous inflammatory coarseness with regard to subject matter; just as frequently long tracts evince an innocent terrifically lyrical grandeur. Griffith would attempt to make amends for the moral schism of this schizophrenic epic in his next film Intolerance but The Birth of a Nation cannot - and should not - remain unseen or undiscussed: it is a great and terrible masterpiece. The Masters of Cinema Series releases Griffith's three-hour epic including a series of the director's Civil War shorts for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK. Special Features: New 1080p presentation (on the Blu-ray) of the film from archival 35mm elements in its original aspect ratio Music by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra in 2.0 stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Short archival introductions to the film by D. W. Griffith and Walter Huston Newly rediscovered original intermission sequence and 1930 re-release title sequence Seven Civil War shorts directed by Griffith: In the Border States (1910); The House with Closed Shutters (1910); The Fugitive (1910); His Trust (1910); His Trust Fulfilled (1910); Swords and Hearts (1911); and The Battle (1911). A lengthy booklet with writing about the film rare archival imagery and more.
