  • Wim Wenders - Story Of His Early YearsWim Wenders - Story Of His Early Years | DVD | (27/10/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Drawing parallels between his early films and his personal biography this documentary traces Wim Wenders' own history focussing on the director's life prior to his leaving Germany for the USA after his international breakthrough with The American Friend (1976/77). In intimate conversations Wim Wenders talks about his sheltered upbringing in post-war Germany. The film follows him on a journey into the past that takes him to Paris where he lived as a young painter and made his decision to become a filmmaker. He recounts his experiences successes and failures as a film student on the way to becoming a director. He also conveys the attitudes and the euphoric mood among the first intake of students at Munich's newly founded film school. Apart from Wenders himself some of his most important fellow-travellers also have their say including Peter Handke Robby M''ller R''diger Vogler Bruno Ganz and Lisa Kreuzer. As they remember they discuss some of the fundamental recurring themes of Wenders' films such as the search for identity friendship and communication.

  • James Dean - The Rare Movies [1951]James Dean - The Rare Movies | DVD | (17/03/2003) from £17.98   |  Saving you £-4.99 (-38.40%)   |  RRP £12.99

In some ways, calling this collection James Dean: The Rare Movies is a little misleading. After all, the "all-purpose delinquent"--as described in David Dalton's fascinating booklet notes--made only three feature films and, in true iconic style, died a youthful, violent death. Yet the collection works somewhat on an ironic level. The 1950s was a decade in which television established itself as the biggest threat to the cinematic medium, and this is a selection of some of the television dramas and commercials that Dean made on his way up to Hollywood stardom, presented with the same introductions and sponsors' messages of the original transmissions. So how good was he at the beginning? All the raw material was there: the restless misfit, the damaged juvenile and the complex punk. In 1954's "I am a Fool" he stars with Natalie Wood in what turned out to be a rehearsal for Rebel Without a Cause on the big screen. At times he moves with an almost balletic grace, at others he twitches with that awkwardness that still leaves new generations of fans totally enthralled. Television was never going to contain him. This is like watching history in the making and is all the more compelling because we know the tragedy that lay but a short way ahead. On the DVD: It scarcely matters that these television dramas and commercials are presented in 4:3 format. The picture quality is inevitably poor and the sound rough, sometimes to the point of inaudibility. Made in television's explosive adolescence, they were never intended to be monuments to technological brilliance. We're just lucky they've survived at all. The track selection offers a maze-like array of choices for you to skip between films, introductions and commercial breaks and occasionally this can be confusing. A chronology on the DVD itself would have helped.--Piers Ford

No combat aircraft ever achieved perfection but at the time of its debut the FW 190 probably came as near to this elusive goal as any other fighter. This aircraft was undoubtedly the finest warplane ever produced by Germany and from the moment it entered the theatre of war the FW 190 achieved a slim margin of superiority over the RAF aircraft in fighter versus fighter combat. In the ground attack role it subsequently proved its ability to absorb considerable punishment and in return deliver a more than powerful punch.

We read the stories. We sing the songs. We attend church. But sometimes we forget the real Jesus. This series of short films offers seven fresh perspectives on the very character of Jesus. Each film crafts together stunning drama footage of the Gospel stories illustrating challenging teaching from Andy Frost. The films take you on a journey into Scripture that both questions and comforts. With wrap around resources, the series is ideal for churches and small groups. This is your opportunity to encounter Jesus afresh. We are called to be followers of Jesus but that can be difficult. The footprints of the physical Jesus have long since disappeared and instead we often follow a set of rules or spiritual to-do lists. It is time to get back to following Jesus again and to do this we must first grapple to understand the very identity of Jesus. Andy Frost loves to pioneer new projects helping the Church to engage more effectively with contemporary culture. He is director of Share Jesus International, an organisation that is passionate in communicating the good news about Jesus in our ever-changing times.
