As one of America's most treasured and delightful opera singers, mezzo soprano Marilyn Horne was justly lauded in this 1994 profile, originally made for the South Bank Show arts programme. At work as one of the finest bel canto singers of the 20th century or at rest looking poignantly back at her career--the making of the film coincided with her 60th birthday--Horne is splendid company. She was born with singing in her blood, trying her hand at everything from the church choir to jingles, pirate pop singles--she did a mean Kay Starr impersonation--and supplying a singing voice for Dorothy Dandridge in the 1954 film of Carmen Jones before embarking on a career as a classical artist. Horne effectively learned her trade during four years at Gelsenkirchen, going on to form a legendary singing partnership with Joan Sutherland and blazing a trail for the mezzo soprano roles--Arsace in Semiramide has been her signature--through the world's greatest opera houses. But for all her success, Horne has retained a down-to-earth openness which permeates this documentary and has rendered her equally at home on the recital stage or in grand opera costume. She speaks with simple brilliance about the singer's technique and about her desire to broaden the appeal of opera. A fascinating portrait of one hell of a dame. On the DVD: At just 52 minutes, the original programme is too short to do Horne full justice. Even so, the film is packed with enough archive footage to whet the appetite of the novice fan. The sound format is Dolby Digital 2.0--adequate enough to do justice to Horne's extraordinary range and genius for ornamentation, and the picture format can be adjusted from the standard 4:3 to 1.78:1 although both do little more than replicate the look and feel of the original television transmission. Detailed booklet notes compensate for the lack of extras on the DVD itself--a biography or career chronology would have been more than handy. --Piers Ford
The F5 Freedom Fighter: The need for an inexpensive lightweight supersonic fighter that was easy to maintain and capable of operating from short runways and poor quality airfields was fulfilled when this baby fighter went from the drawing board to become one of the most successful export products of the US military aircraft industry. We also look at the company that produced this little marvel and see how it and other early manufacturers of aircraft have developed. The F104 Star Fighter: We look at one of the many legendary planes designed by one of the worlds most awarded Aviation designers - Kelly Johnson. We follow the path of the much maligned but equally inspiring F104 Lockheed Star Fighter from Kelly's initial concepts in 1952 through the painstaking development and to the last F104 made in 1983 a production run that lasted over 30 years. The F105 Thunderjet: In the annals of aeronautic history the plane that takes the place between Republics classic attack fighters the P47 thunderbolt of the Second World War and their outstanding F105 Thunderchief in the skies of Vietnam is often skipped over. This period of expansion marked the first ventures into jet aircraft and many of the lessons learnt during the development of this series of planes have sired today's generations of fighter aircraft. After the hectic development period of world war 2 and the ensuing rush into jet engine development a successive series of fighter aircraft emerged that made their mark in aviation history. These planes epitomised the shape of the supersonic jet fighter; they were the Century Fighters. The Grumman F14a Tomcat is amongst today's ultimate weapons. It is considered a large fighter and stands at 63 foot long 16 foot high and has a maximum wingspan of 64' 1. The F14 's cruise speed is approximately 610 mph and it has a maximum speed of 1544 mph or nearly mach 2 - twice the speed of sound. VTOL stands for vertical take off and landing. If you are thinking helicopters you are correct. However in this episode we review the development of a plane that has the abilities of a helicopter as well as being a front line fighter plane. The Harrier Jump Jet is the only VTOL with a fighting history and the only VTOL in service today.

The Magical World of JK Rowling is an early bid to cash in on the fresh wave of Potter-mania that's about to break in the wake of the first big-screen Harry Potter. Fair enough, except that the makers of this documentary are operating under certain minor disadvantages: they've got no material, and nothing to say. As a result, some fairly desperate padding has gone on. For all that, even though the film runs a mere 39 minutes, it still feels painfully overstretched. For a start, they evidently couldn't get hold of JK Rowling herself. This isn't too surprising--after some bad experiences with the press following the success of the first Harry Potter book, she virtually never gives interviews (she took her revenge in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which features an obnoxious tabloid hack who meets a very unpleasant fate). The filmmakers make do with excerpts from her speech at the 1999 British Book Awards, interspersed with interviews with critics, bookstore assistants, school kids and teachers. This is all just about as exciting, and illuminating, as it sounds. The film's biggest scoop is a family who knew Rowling when she was a girl, and whose surname is--wait for it--Potter! Not even the most avid HP fan will get much from this limp effort. Sit tight and wait for the film. --Philip Kemp
