This entertaining three disc series, presented by Russ Malkin, looks at the past, present and future of British manufacturing. It looks at the invention of the steam engine, the development of motorcycle racing and helicopter production, the early pioneering days of space technology through to the present day world of satellite manufacturing, and also a look to the future with regard to re-usable space planes and electric powered delivery vehicles. This series looks behind the scenes and talks to historians, designers, technologists and innovators, and for those who love history and archive footage of steam engines and old sailing boats, it is a must. However it is combined with a contemporary view on what Britain is building today. Britain is well known for being inventive; it has a reputation for letting products disappear to foreign shores. As we move into much more competitive times, with China and India on the ascendancy, can Britain hang on to its position as 7th largest manufacturer in the world? Original members Levi Stubbs Renaldo 'Obie' Benson Lawrence Payton and Abdul 'Duke' Fakir first sang together in Detroit in 1954 calling themselves The Four Aims. Two years later they changed their name to The Four Tops and the rest is popular music history. As a live attraction The Four Tops attracted capacity audiences wherever they appeared in concert around the world. The original line-up performed together for 44 years until Lawrence Payton's death in 1997. Sadly soon afterwards lead singer Levi Stubbs had to retire from the band because of ill health and Renaldo Benson died in 2005. The Four Tops continued under the astute musical leadership of original founder member Abdul 'Duke' Fakir who recruited Roquel Payton (the son of founder member Lawrence Payton) Theo Peoples (formerly with The Temptations and who took over lead vocals) and Ronnie McNair. This DVD captures this particular line-up of The Four Tops at their electrifying best reprising all the evergreen hits in concert. It includes a brief emotional appearance by former lead singer Levi Stubbs. The Six Theatres of WWII consists of two DVD sets, each of which contain two individual DVD discs focused on the military campaigns of the Second World War. In-turn, these sets are part of a wider range of double-packages, coming under the overall title of Chronicles of War. Each set offers three documentary films with a total running time of just under three hours. The films contain rare and recently discovered archive film and are packed with vivid combat footage, providing a strong companion series to the television classic The World At War. The material is almost entirely black and white, and the picture quality, which is dependent on the source materials, is as good as can be expected. Volume 2: "The Sea Campaign" begins with an outline of the British and German navies before WWII began, encompasses action in the North Atlantic and Pacific, covers the battle between the convoys and the U-Boats and concludes with the war in the Mediterranean. "The Jungle Campaign" ranges from the Japanese invasion of Burma and the building of the notorious railway made famous in The Bridge on the River Kwai through Wingate's Chindits and Merrill's Marauders to Operation Rangoon. It is the least action-filled of the six programmes and leads into "The Pacific Campaign", which spans the aftermath of Pearl Harbor to the battle of Midway and the final taking of Japan. There are 11 extra features: four short films about aspects of naval warfare, some modern interview footage with SAS veterans about jungle conflict and six selections of US news archive/propaganda film, two in colour which include the official American Congress declaration of war on Japan. --Gary S.
