  • Nous Ne Vieillirons Pas Ensemble [We Won't Grow Old Together] [Masters of Cinema] [DVD]Nous Ne Vieillirons Pas Ensemble | DVD | (24/08/2009) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Rare is the film in movie-history that can announce the entire movement of it's 'plot' with its title alone. But Pialat's second feature Nous Ne Viellirons Pas Ensemble does exactly that encapsulating all the turmoil and the final end-point of a couple who among themselves once made a commitment - and living together will come to make another one yet. Jean (Jeane Yanne of Godard's Weekend) and Catherine (Marlene Jobert of Godard's Masculin Feminin) are the couple whose every move charts an advancement deeper into an emotional warzone. Theirs is the classic and the tragic case of an emotional abuse centered around a perplexing but powerful interdependency. At last the point arrives that determines the relationship with all its weekend holidays its apologies and submissions can go no further - and in a final shot of genius Pialat discloses all the ways in which the future might be at once liberated and enslaved by the past. Based on a novel by Pialat himself and on the trauma of his own personal life in the years leading up to the film Nous Ne Viellirons Pas Ensemble was a smash-hit at the time of its release - and yet is arguably one of the most upsetting films ever made.

  • Harrison's Flowers [2000]Harrison's Flowers | DVD | (04/08/2003) from £7.22   |  Saving you £10.77 (149.17%)   |  RRP £17.99

An implausible plot doesn't prevent Harrison's Flowers from being a harrowing and moving depiction of the cost of war. Andie MacDowell stars as Sarah Lloyd, the wife of a photojournalist reported lost in the 1991 civil war raging between ethnic divisions in the former Yugoslavia. Refusing to believe her husband is dead, Sarah flies to Austria and then drives into the heart of the war, where she teams up with other photographers (Adrien Brody and Brendan Gleeson), who help her find a small town where her husband was last seen--while all around them rages one of the most horrific conflicts of the late 20th century. The story is barely credible, but the depiction of the war itself is stunning, and the depiction of the lives of photojournalists--partly thrill-seeking voyeurs, partly truth tellers--is complex and compelling. Though MacDowell isn't a great actress, all the performances are solid, and Brody is outstanding. --Bret Fetzer

  • My Name Is Joe [DVD]My Name Is Joe | DVD | (18/03/2013) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

The second of many collaborations between acclaimed director Ken Loach and award-winning screenwriter Paul Laverty, My Name Is Joe is a typically hard-hitting drama with humour, passion, tragedy and violence in equal measure. Peter Mullan (Orphans) stars as Joe, a recovering alcoholic who has done a few things in his past which he'd rather forget. Out of work and on the dole, he keeps sane by coaching a local football team largely made up of delinquents. When one of Joe's players, Liam, gets involved with some local gangsters a chain of events is set in motion which not only threatens the lives of those concerned but also impacts on Joe's budding love affair with social worker, Sarah. Set in the stark surroundings of a socially deprived Glasgow, My Name Is Joe is another masterful social-realist work from Loach supplemented by an arresting performance from Peter Mullan (who won Best Actor at Cannes for this performance).
