Rob Reiner directs this romantic comedy about an author, Alex (Luke Wilson), who has received a threat from gangsters that they will kill him if he doesn't repay his gambling debts within 30 days. The only way he can possibly get the money is to finish his new novel, so to speed things up he hires Emma (Kate Hudson), a court stenographer, to transcribe his manuscript. The film cuts between the two of them writing the story, and the story itself (Hudson plays three different roles in the film, and Wilson plays two). Emma's input begins to influence the story more and more, and before long life starts to imitate art.
