"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is a smart, funny murder-mystery from "Lethal Weapon" writer Shane Black. While fleeing from a toy store robbery, Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) stumbles into a Hollywood audition and inadvertently impresses the casting director. He is then whisked off to a glamorous LA party, and teamed up with private eye Gay Perry (Val Kilmer) in order to get some first-hand experience for the role he mistakenly got. From there the newly acquainted duo find themselves embroiled in a murder case, trying to find out who is behind it and why they are trying to pin it on Harry. This film is smart, really smart, so smart in fact that it takes the time to literally stop and have Downey Jr. narrate a bit about how smart it is. These days however, this is just what we need more of, Downey Jr. and Kilmer are both easily likeable and the chemistry between their characters is the main charm of the film. Michelle Monaghan also puts in a good turn as Harry's ditsy dream girl, Harmony. The dialogue is sharp and fast paced, if not a little self-indulgent. The plot is genuinely interesting throughout, keeping twists consistent and ending with a highly effective climax.

Kilmer & Downey Jr in the same place at one time? Most directors would run for the hills confronted with that potential migraine inducer! So props go out to Shane Black for not only getting great performances out of both, but also conjuring up a partnership to rival Riggs & Murtaugh any day of the week.
Black has always had a knack of writing dialogue you wanna hear (and wish you could say yourself without practising first) and listening to Kilmer & Downey Jr going for it is pure poetry (although foul-mouthed poetry, but hey, we're all grown up here).
If you like your Chandler, Leonard & Hammett with a touch a noughties sass, thern this is the flick for you. If you are looking for Lethal Weapon 5, then look elsewhere because this might ne a touch cerebral & self-referential for your tastes.
Just enjoy it, but dont buy the DVD - wait a few months til the worth-your-money special edition comes out.

Comedy starring Robert Downey Jr. Harry Lockhart (Downey Jr.) is basically a decent guy. Sure, he's a petty thief who skates through life on a shaky cocktail of dog-eared charm and cockeyed optimism, but he wants to do the right thing. He just doesn't know how, exactly. Harry's perpetual bad luck takes a turn for the better when he and his partner are doing some after-hours Christmas 'shopping' at a New York City toy store and the security alarm breaks up the party. In making his frantic getaway from the cops, Harry inadvertently stumbles into an audition for a Hollywood detective movie, and faster than you can say Jack Robinson, the producer flies him to Los Angeles for a screen test. Thrust into the cutthroat world of L.A.'s pros, cons, losers and wannabes, Harry is teamed with tough-guy private eye Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer), AKA 'Gay Perry', to prepare him for his screen test.
