Set in the dying days of World War II, the greatest catastrophe in naval history left over 9000 dead - six times more than in the Titanic disaster. Follow the desperate struggle of thousands of refugees to board, the murderous incompetence of rivalling authorities, the fateful interplay of four captains and finally the cataclysmic sinking of the torpedoed ship into the icy Baltic Sea.
German made-for-TV drama which tells the story of the sinking of passenger ship the Gustloff in the final year of WWII. Kai Wiesinger plays Hellmut Kehding, captain of the ill-fated ship evacuating soldiers and German civilians from Danzig in January 1945. Not long after leaving the harbour, the Gustoff was shelled by torpedoes from a Soviet submarine and sank within an hour, taking the lives of over 9,000 people, most of whom were women and children.
