Forest Whitaker, Ellen Burstyn and Harvey Keitel star in Rachid Bouchareb's drama remake of the 1973 José Giovanni film. After serving an 18-year prison sentence for murdering a deputy sheriff, reformed Muslim William Garnett (Whitaker) is determined to get his life back on the straight and narrow after being released but is confined to a small New Mexican border town. As he tries to rebuild his life with the help of his parole officer (Burstyn), he faces opposition from the town's sheriff Bill Agati (Keitel) who wants justice for his murdered deputy.
