An unusual new perspective on the life of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Viewed via the story of Ida Mussolini's mistress-cum-wife who had a relationship with him through his early years and rise to power. Director Marco Bellocchio brilliantly conjures up this extraordinary period in Italian history while managing to convey a very intimate and personal story. Highly acclaimed on it's Cannes debut Vincere is another significant film in the ultra-impressive canon of it's directors work.

Marco Bellocchio directs this Italian drama based on the true story of Benito Mussolini's secret first wife and son, who were hidden away by the fascist Italian leader and both went on to die in insane asylums. Giovanna Mezzogiorno stars as Ida, a young beautician who falls in love with the charismatic rising political leader and newspaper publisher Benito Mussolini (Filippo Timi). After marrying him and bearing him a son (also called Benito), she is later discarded like a minor pawn in Il Duce's megalomaniacal path of triumph. After Mussolini finds a new wife, Rachele Guidi (Michela Cescon), he has Ida locked up and all records of both the marriage and his son erased.
Though seldom discussed in history books (and reportedly undisclosed for half a century), fascist dictator Benito Mussolini conceived an illegitimate son by a woman named Ida Dalser -- a son Mussolini allowed to be born, acknowledged, and then promptly denied for the duration of his life. This unusual and offbeat historical drama rests on a little-known conceit.
