One after another, the team from Peep Show churn out non stop hilarity. Series 4 of Peep Show is some of the best yet, though some complain this series takes place mostly out of the flat. Some of the best scenes are Jez eating a dead dog, Jez becoming a sex slave for the "Orgazoid", Mark going feral right before is presentation, and Mark/Jez basically ruining Sophie & her Family's lives. Spectacular series!
Yet another hilarious series.
With it's mix of silly/surreal comedy Snuff Box was the best sketch show in years. Only lasted one series, but 6 episodes brimming w/ brilliance. Matt Berry (Darkplace, Man to Man with Dean Learner, Mighty Boosh) scored all the music, and co-wrote the series with Rich Fulcher.
Surreal sketch comedy at its best.
Directed by Christiopher Nolan, this epic adventure takes the boundaries of superhero to the next level. It combines great performances from Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Katie Holmes, Micheal Caine and many more. Unlike any of the previous Batman movies, Batman Begins shows the full transformation from begginer, to pro. With a script to die for written by David. S. Goyer (director of Blade: Trinity), this movie keeps you entertained for every second. In my and many other opinions, this movie could not have been made any better.
In this fluctual story of terror, wisdom and revenge, Christian Bale portrays Bruce Wayne an eager, lost soul who looses his parents to gun crime. In spite of this he travels to the four corners of the earth, trying to escape his parents death. But when he arrives at a mysterious palace which inhabits the leauge of shadows,a dangerous colonny driven by revenge, Bruce joins them and begins his training as an ellite assasin. But as time passes, Bruce Wayne travels back to his home in Gotham City, vowing to avenge his parents death by protecting the innocent. But by doing this he creates a mystical creature of the night named only as Batman. By combining ancient techniques with modern gadgets and driving the one and only "Batmobile", batman fights the Scarecow and Ras Al Ghul in this epic adventure.
With the release of the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull it is the perfect time to relive the original three movies. This is without doubt one of the best movie trilogy"s of all time. Full of action, adventure and comedy. These movies most definitely get a 5 star rating from me.
However this package is just another re-release to cash in on the new movie. It offers new extras but nothing exceptional. The transfers are the same as the ones from the 2003 set. The box itself is nowhere near as attractive as the 2003 version. In fact just buy the 2003 version which is a better package all-round.
A mega deluxe blu-ray set would be most welcome and bound to be on the cards soon. Until then the 2003 set remains best version released.
The movies 5 stars, the dvd re-release 3 stars
Bond, Nicole Kidman, Eva Green and an overgrown talking Polar bear in armour? OK, I'm interested; having never read Phillip Pullman's popular, controversial fantasy 'His Dark Materials', I was going into this adaptation (the first in his trilogy) with minimal prior knowledge, and though I wasn't exactly overwhelmed or won over, 'The Golden Compass', though heavy on exposition / sequel set ups, has it moments and isn't quite as bad as some make it out to be. Hyped as a grand, metaphysical battle between religious fundamentalism and secular reason, 'The Golden Compass' is more like one convoluted, Tolkein-esque scrap in a chapter of that old, long settled, civil war: Christianity vs. Freemasonry. 12-year-old orphan Lyra (newcomer Dakota Blue Richards) steps up as our pint sized heroine; encountering numerous characters and their daemons (i.e. animal counterparts) allied with her uncle Lord Asriel (bearded, brooding Daniel Craig & Snow Leopard). An August Buxton Comte figure, Asriel comes into direct conflict with 'The Magisterium' (an all powerful, Vatican-esque entity intent on stealing Children's souls) after an Arctic expedition hints at the discovery of golden dust (i.e. Monatomic Gold) that may open up a portal to parallel worlds. Lyra soon finds herself in possession of a rare Alethiometer (i.e. Golden Compass), her best friend is kidnapped (rendered to 'The Magisterium' gulag in Antarctica) and things take a turn for the fantastical, after a fateful meeting with 'Magisterium' shill Marisa Coulter (an excellent Nicole Kidman). 'The Magistarium's' clerical elite are represented by Fra Pavel (Simon McBurney); an odious vicar created in accordance with the Masonic representation of Cardinal Ottiboni, satirised persecutor of Freemasonry, fantasy fans should also look out for an appearance by the legend Christopher Lee. Stunning French starlet Eva Green also crops up in an exposition heavy role, and her Serafina character reminded me of Sera the Canaanite from cult short story '10 Nails', director Chris Weitz ('About A Boy') doesn't really make the most of his cast, and it often feels that the fantasy epic is perhaps too big a genre for the man best known for 'American Pie'. Nicole Kidman's Mrs Coulter, an exciting polar bear fight and reasonably good battle royal finale are the high points; Kidman's Coulter is a lot like Cruella De Ville (only fit) with a dash of Barbra Stanwick 'Double Indemnity'-esque malice thrown in for good measure. Daniel Craig is less of a bore here then he usually is, in fact, its probably his best role since 'Enduring Love'. In order to be 'a' anything, one has to recognise the root of negation i.e. morality must exist for one to be amoral, and God must be acknowledged in order for a pejorative epithet like atheist to make any sense; which is why atheists would be a lot more fun if they simply declared themselves in open rebellion against God (which is more or less what I'm told Pullman's books are about). And though militant atheistic propaganda may be a tad unsuitable for young children, Pullman could just as easily argue that C.S. Lewis's 'Narnia' series indoctrinates our youth by selling them on ideas like Christian superiority or righteous crusade against the other. I'm of the opinion that neither message should obstruct or be the primary narrative drive for any movie, nonetheless, 'The Golden Compass' strings together a few decent sequences and its quite similar to Matthew Vaughn's mediocre adaption of Neil Gaiman's 'Stardust'. Mildly entertaining fluff, but its no 'Pan's Labyrinth'.
This is undoubtably one of the worst films you will see. Not even so bad it's good it's just plain bad. The vain project of Paul Push that started out as a good short film and then became a padded feature length borefest. Unable to grasp reality Paul casts himself in every possible avenue of the film without realising his own obvious limitations. Even as the last DVD on earth Will Smith would avoid it.
I Am Legend is the new American blockbuster starring Will Smith and Alice Braga. This can give you the jumps if you're not prepared. Years after a deadly virus wiped out nearly all humanity, Robert Neville (Will Smith) struggles to find a cure to save the survivors. In fact, he gives up his life to keep the rest of human life. But, the humans that got the virus turned into thse zombie like creatures. Will Smith gives a good performance as Robert Neville. Highle recommended, 8/10
Timothy Dalton returns as 007 once again and does a brilliant job. James Bond has a personal vendetta as his friend, Felix Leiter (David Hedison) is brutally attacked by drug lord, Franz Sanchez (Robert Davi)and that he is making a new drug for some drug dealers and himself. Co-starring in this jaw dropping film is Carey Lowell as Pam Bouvier, Robert Davi (Die Hard) as Franz Sanchez and Talisa Soto as Lupe Lamora. This is the second best of all Bonds. I highly reccomend this film totally. 10/10
After a let down from Guy Hamilton's 'Diamonds Are Forever', Hamilton directs 'Live and Let Die' and does a splendid, neat job. This is by far the best of all Bonds. It is humorous, action packed and is very entertaining. The boat chase is the best in the history of films for me and the song is one of the best. Roger Moore gives a brilliant performance as 007, Yaphet Kotto is a very good Mr Big, Jane Seymour isn't so annoying as most "Bond girls" and Clifton James is hilarious as the crazy J.W Pepper. Overall, watch it one day as this is the best. 10/10
The film that really introduced us to the talents of Jake Gyllenhaal, this film is a fine example of how education is, for most people, the only way out of a bad situation. The cast is magnificent and Chris Cooper is in arguably his best role, but it is the enthusiasm of Jake Gyllenhaal that carries the film. The film has humour, warmth and a soft centre, but you would need a heart of steel not to be moved. Don't miss!
Grinning Muppet Freddie Prinze Jr. romances miserable cow Julia Stiles in Kris 'never going to work again' Isacsson's soppy melodrama 'Down To You'. After the success of 'She"s All That' (1999), 'Miramax' all but shelved its exclusive commitment to cutting edge drama (remember Jason Mewes's 'She"s All That' gag in 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back'?) and paired pretty boy Prinze Jr. with Stiles in a deceptively decent premise about twentysomethings finding & losing true love. Now I quite liked Julia Stiles in 'Hamlet', 'O' and the 'Bourne' movies, but she's got to be one of the most expressionless actresses around. 'Ten Things I Hate About You'? well, one of them was that movie Stiles, for her weepy classroom speech almost made me wish 'Elephant' was going on in the other room, and that any minute now, some American teen psychos in trench-coats would burst in brandishing semi-automatics just to liven things up. Meanwhile, Freddie's two expressions (i.e. deer-in-headlights and side smile) ensure Al & Imogen make for an odd onscreen couple, though to be fair, Issacson's script has the germ of a good idea; its just his execution and penchant for cringe worthy clichés that makes 'Down To You' a chore to watch. Now the romantic comedy / melodrama was going strong in the late nineties; I'll even admit to having a soft spot for Julia Roberts and Richard Gere's sweet reunion flick 'Runaway Bride', though Jr's wife-to-be; Sarah Michelle Geller, pretty much killed the genre with the ironically repulsive; 'Simply Irresistible', some roobarb about Sarah Michelle Geller and crabs (the aquatic life form, not the STD). 'Down To You' employs a lot of direct-to-camera scenes which are handled quite well, though these cats don't so much break the forth wall, as knock it down with a wrecking ball, climb out of the crane jump into the rubble go berserk with a sledgehammer; now having characters deliver soliloquies is fine, but here its done so often that you occasionally wish they'd just leave you alone and get back to their movie. Al & Imogen work through the usual relationship dilemmas, Freddie Prinze swigs shampoo after the breakup because if he can get over shampoo; then he can get over Julia Stiles, yes, its that kinda movie, the sort of film which brings back memories of Ross & Rachel's misjudged break up episode from 'Friends', I think it was called 'The One Where Schwimmer & Anniston Fail Miserably In A Joint Effort To Convince As Dramatic Actors'. Ashton Kutcher, in the days before he lost his car or married a pensioner, plays someone called Jim Morrison (a misnomer if ever there was one), 'She's All That' co-star and perennial teen movie actress Selma Blair also crops up whilst old school favourites Lucie Arnaz and Henry 'The Fonz' Winkler (who appeared to be making a late 90s comeback after 'The Waterboy') are on hand as Al's parents. Freddie Prinze Jr. fluctuates between side smile, deer-in-headlights and, for variety's sake; side smile, singlehandedly making a case as to why he shouldn't work in movies anymore, by killing Issacson's one and only golden goose; fumbling the potentinally promising, surreal satirical interlude about emasculation, entitled 'The Man Show'. Freddie Prinze Jr...why? But of course its all changed now...for in the years since I resigned my membership as chief propagandist of the 'Freddie Prinze Jr. Haters Society' (now under new management as the 'Ashton Kutcher Sucks Balls Club') I saw him on stage in Kenneth Lonergan's excellent play 'This Is Our Youth'. 'American Pie's' resident bozo Chris Klein was also treading the boards that night, great, I thought; two idiots for the price of one, why didn't I see this when Matt Damon & Casey Affleck were in it? But much to my initial dismay, and eventual begrudging appreciation: Freddie Prinze Jr. could actually act! He'd been holding out on us all these years with fluff like 'Wing Commander' and 'Summer Catch', when in fact Prinze Jr. wasn't nearly as bad an actor as he'd led a generation to believe. Talking to him backstage, I respectfully chose not to warn Freddie (who, to make matters worse, is a stand up guy) off making any more rubbish films, alas, my lack of inventionalist spirit may've played some part in Prinze Jr. accepting a recurring role as Fred, in the abysmal adaption of 'Scooby Doo', its unspeakable follow up 'Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed' and a very real threat of another sequel on the horizon. 'Down To You' is an unremarkable date movie which could've been good had all involved injected a modicum of creativity into the proceedings, for at least 'She's All That' could always fall back on Sixpence None The Richer's intensely annoying, irritatingly catchy song: 'Kiss Me', 'Down To You' doesn't even have that. Feckless young lovers may enjoy it, cynical misanthropes not so much. Down and out.
The Kolchak series was commissioned after the popularity of the 1972 TV movie The Night Stalker, and the 1973 sequel, The Night Strangler. The series ran for 20 episodes from September 1974 to August 1975.
Each episode shows our weatherbeaten hero, Carl Kolchak (a reporter for the Chicago Independent News Service), encountering some supernatural goings-on. The weird occurrences or other-worldly beings usually have left behind a trail of bodies, hence the reporter's interest.
Not just any bodies mind you - people drained of blood, prematurely aged, robbed of bone marrow, spines snapped, or killed with medieval weaponry.
Kolchack has to get to the bottom of these mysteries, despite local authorities' ignorance or denial of the true cause of the murders, while Kolchak's boss Tony Vincenzo finds his stories a bit hard to swallow.
The series deservedly has a huge cult following, and X-Files creator Chris Carter has acknowledged it as the inspiration for Mulder & Scully; not to mention other similar shows like Eerie Indiana or Friday the 13th The Series. A vintage classic!
Hugely influential TV show and a forgotten classic.
I personaly love this show. i have purchased seasons 1,2 and 3 and have watched season 4 on the internet. This show is the new generation of sci-fi (much better than star trek). After watching season 4 i would say i want Jordan's cult to win against everyone else because NTAC are boring.

without a trace. Then suddenly they are all returned in a ball of light. Some of them have the ability to do extraordinary things. Then after being released from quarantine they all have to intergrate into everyday life.
After the release of Cinderella: - a twist in time a few months back, it seems strange that yet another take on the Cinderella story is about to hit our screens. The only difference with this film is the mention of other fairytale characters such as Snow White, Rumpelstilzkin, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel. As you can imagine, Fairytale Land is dominated by damsels in distress and their princely saviours, and follows a predictable course in which maidens are saved, villains defeated and everyone lives happily ever after. After the balance of good and evil is disrupted, the inhabitants are forced to choose sides.
As a film made for the viewing of children, the beginning out of sequence narrative may have them slightly confused on the order of events. But as we are caught up to the point the stepmother becomes ruler, the children will become familiar with the characters. There is Ella, two wicked step sisters, wicked step mother, a handsome yet dumb witted prince, the princes servant Rick, the wizard in charge of fairytale land and his two side kicks. The appearance of Cinderella may not however be, as children today will recognise her. Forget the blond hair and quite reserved persona, this Cinderella, or Ella as she is called is more of a modern woman.
Casting director Ruth Lambert hasn't gone star-crazy the way so many other animated movies do. This film has strong voices such as Weaver, Gellar and Prize Jr for key parts. It"s not quite clear when watching Gellar and Prinze Jr together on screen if they were the best people for the parts. They have been married for a number of years now, worked on the Scooby Doo flicks and now this film. There are arguments and Gellar"s character going after someone else. For an adult watching it may be a little unnerving, but as children are none of the wiser regarding their personal lives they are likely to love the interaction between the two. On the plus side, even though this is a cartoon film, viewers can hear through the characters voices that so much effort has been put in, rather than standing in front of a microphone and reading from the script.
Screenwriter Rob Moreland is good with the one-liners but unfortunately the plot runs weak in some places. It's an interesting idea that Ella should prefer the servant boy Rick to the attractive prince, but the romantic tension never really takes off. This new cartoon flick will be an enjoyable experience for all the family. Its packed full of all your favourite characters, some humour to keep children and adults entertained and still has good battling evil with a fight to the finish.
CRACKING DVD!So hilarious this is one you will watch again and again and still find it funny.A brilliant cast and fantastic scipt this is one dvd you will not regret buying!
TIDY!
Absolutely CRACKING!
"The Kite Runner" is an engaging story of childhood betrayal and adult redemption. It is well told, but not a spectacular film. I didn"t read the book that this film is a translation of as I thought it was a kind of "buy 2 get 1 free" in Waterstones glimpse into the lives of the exotic and less fortunate for middle-brow middle-class (nice) white women living in suburban England. Watching the film, however, I had to dismiss some of this prejudice. It is a good story populated with sympathetic, if not complex, characters, and that is, really, enough to make a film worth watching. Nevertheless, there were a few things about "The Kite Runner" that I had a problem with. The greatest of these was that it all looked like it was filmed on set, a physically contrived world occupied by extras and actors, crew and camera. It lacked the realism that all other films I have seen about / set in Afghanistan have, and that is something I missed. Perhaps because of this, the film failed to capture any sense of place, either of landscape or cityscape. Neither did it convey much of a sense of distance, culturally as well as geographically, between Afghanistan and the USA (or therefore time). This is a major flaw considering the film"s protagonist is a displaced Afghan refugee. Similarly, the sequences where kites soar above Kabul, and later a park in the USA, potentially spectacular and intended tense / emotional highpoints, were lacking. Whilst I want to blame this on the CGI of the cities beneath the kites, I think my disappointment with these scenes was actually symptomatic of my inability to empathise fully with the characters and / or locations. Despite this, however, the film has just as many good moments, some of them quite shocking, and, as I have said above, does tell a good story. A story worth watching.
It looks like one of those preachy american films about pregnancy, something you really don't want to watch because you'll get one of those stuck up horrible teeenage girls, right?
Wrong.
Such a smartly written chracter, Juno is hilarious, laugh out loud and simply beautiful. Maybe it's not the best film for those who like action, but if you are like me and love a good old film thats not too girly, simple and funny, then get this! I cant wait for the dvd to be released as it was simply fantastic to see at the cinema.
Juno will be one of the best characters you have seen portrayed in a very long time, you're bound to fall in love with her :)
Fat Friends starring Alison Steadman (Gavin and Stacey, The worst week of my life) James Corden (Writer of Gavin and Stacey) Ruth Jones (Writer of Gavin and Stacey) and more actors and actress's, this comedy drama addresses the difficulties of dieting and being overweight. Characters larger than life (sometimes literally) are common in this drama, ranging from a husband who has a daughter suffering from anorexia and the struggles of becoming a divorced, to a happily married women finding her son that was put up for adoption at the tender age of 15. This series is written brilliantly and really makes you feel for these characters, Fat Friends brings you tears and laughter, and it's not many shows that can bring that in just one episode. Each episode being just under an hour, you really get a nice big chunk of the story each episode. I brought this DVD and watched the whole three series in just 2 days. I was gripped and after each episode wanted to watch the next. So this series is very highly recommended.
This is a fantastic film for all the family to sit and watch. The effects and colours bring the film to life!
Although at first i found it difficult to picture Mandy Patinkin as anyone other than rube sofer in Dead Like Me, i found this show to actually be very convincing and iteresting due to its new perspective on criminal inverstigation. This show deals much more into the psychological mindset of the killer and tracking him/her this way. It makes for a refreshing change.
