Mike Nichols(before Mama Mia) made this masterpiece, anyone who has remotely been involved in "over indulgence"and survived the aftermath can relate to this film.
It does not show the sleepless nights or the days where the character cannot stay awake, but, and it's a big but,in subtlety alone Mike nails the essences of dependance, family and realisation. With a raft of familiar actors as stock this film oozes quality.
With music by Carly Simon to top off the great performances of Meryl Streep & Shirley Maclaine playing Daughter and Mother(to the real life Carrie Fisher & Debbie Reynolds)this makes my top fifty.
Mike's honing a skill here and films like this make blockbusters like Mama Mia possible.
You have to wonder whether Michael Moore has now served his purpose. When the maker of any documentary-style release is as big a name, and often causes as much controversy as the subjects he seeks to highlight, then any impact he hopes to make is greatly diminished.
Which is a great shame, because his documentaries are always great to watch - I've seen Bowling for Columbine, Farenheit 9/11 and now Sicko, all at the cinema, and all received rapturous applause as the credits rolled - how many films can claim that accolade in a bog standard Cineworld I wonder?
The fact is that Moore makes great documentaries that are incredibly enjoyable and thought-provoking. The fact is also that Moore has his own agenda and only follows these avenues, leading the viewer to the answers that he wants them to discover. There is no objectivity here and no learning or change of opinion from Moore himself.
This is a great shame, as any documentary should be a mystery journey for both the viewer and the maker - but Moore always buys his ticket beforehand, knows exactly where he is going and refuses to take uncomfortable (for him) detours.
The reason this is worth buying/renting is because Mooore's films are always good viewing and if you are happy to not delve too deeply beneath the surface, there are plenty of staggering stories here and the dvd extras are well worth viewing too!
A truly unique & superb psychological drama set in a strangely familiar "Village" atmosphere.
Leaves modern tv drama standing & looking like the load of dumbass rubbish that is is.
If you like intelligent well written & sci-fi/spy/psychological executed drama, you won't get much better than this.
11/10
The League of gentlemen uses dark and twisted humour and is not for the faint hearted. If however you aren't excluded by the above you will love it's wicked sense of humour and get drawn in to the recurring characters such as Edward and Tubbs. It is one of the few laugh out loud till it hurts comedy series of recent times. I would have no hesitation in recommending it. Superb.
Martin Scorcese is all that has to be said, a brilliant director with a brilliant knowledge and first hand experience of the "gangster" life, with films such as Mean streets and goodfellas that are classics, and this does not differ what so ever! This is a brilliant movie with well known actors and the storyline is genius, any person who likes this type of movie should own it, end of. Based on the asian film Infernal affairs, hopefully there will be a sequel! There is not much i can say about this film except that is is brilliant and should be a part of anyones collection! Well done Scorcese.
transporter was a really cool film i dont really watch many films but out of all the ones i have seen this is probably the best one. it was so good i could bearly take my eyes away from the screen.
It's the next big thing to hit our screens. Heroes has become one of TV's most popular programmes of the 2006-2007 era. When normal, everyday people discover they're not quite who they seem, their lives change forever.
From the male Nurse, Peter, who can see into the future to the young cheerleader who discovers she cannot be hurt, the great adventure begins.
The character are brought across to us in such a way that we cannot help but relate to how they feel. Alternative representations of characters are brought across to us in this ever-changing world that we now live in.
So if it's entertainment, adventure and incredible plot/characters, then Heroes is the show for you.
Brilliant drama staring Googie Withers, looking into the lives of staff and inmates, a must watch for any bad girls fans.
A real tearjerker! Kate Winslet plays her part spectacularly!! A wonderful film for those duvet days when it is cold and raining outside!! a great film to watch while eating a big box of chocolates!!
Desperate Housewives. Actually the most exciting television show on tv at the moment. This complete boxset of series 1-3 houses the fun, sex, drama, comedy, etc all in one place. This is perfect for anyone who wants to know all they can about they're neighbours, and anyone who loves a surprise or two. Absolutely fantastic, I love this show.
This was well worth the money, Russell Brand is a legend. I saw some of this stand up live and it was just brilliant, Would recommend to anyone who wants a good laugh but warning not for the easily offended.
Quentin Tarantino simply doesn't care; he doesn't care that critical expectation willed him to become a serious auteur, he doesn't care that no discerning director would jeopardise the acclaim bestowed upon modern classics like 'Reservoir Dogs', 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Jackie Brown' with comic-book fare like 'Kill Bill'. No, Tarantino is king because he dares to do what he wants, when he wants, how he wants to do it, and ultimately, its this unshakable self-confidence/bravado that propels him ever onwards; still as popular today as he was 12 years ago. 'Death Proof', originally part of the 'Grindhouse' double bill with Robert Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror', is to the 1992-98 Q cannon what 'Ewoks: Caravan Of Courage' is to 'Star Wars: A New Hope', that said, there's no denying that even Tarantino light, is stronger and more satisfying a brew than most other director's at their best. The plot is dead simple: psycho Stuntman Mike (an excellent Kurt Russell) likes to murder women with his modified car "it's a sex thing" whispers Michael Parkes crusty sheriff in his trademark Southern drawl, petrol head Mike kills with impunity, but gets more than he bargained for the second time around. 'Death Proof' not only pays homage to the 'Grindhouse' exploitation genre; incorporating everything from scratched film stock, an excellent pre-credit certificate cartoon and a fake title: 'Thunder Bolt', but blends vintage Tarantino dialogue with his love for 1970s-80s drive-in cinema like 'Crazy Mary, Dirty Larry' and 'Vanishing Point', in fact, I'm surprised he didn't name a character Christine as a nod to John Carpenter. A film of two halves, Section 1 introduces some Texan good-time girls as they prepare for a night out on the town, Stuntman Mike stalks from afar until their fateful meting in the local pub (cue director's cameo as the barman and an appearance by menacing oddball Eli 'Hostel' Roth). There's plenty of good dialogue here, and though its set almost entirely in the bar, we really get a feel for the characters, as Tarantino builds up to the graphic, blood splattered conclusion. Part II begins as a virtual re-run, though when Rosario Dawson turns the print from black & white to colour, its game on as Mike tries to off a new group of young women. Its all here: everything from 'Big Kahuna Burger' ("...that's that Hawaiian burger joint..." from 'Dusk Till Dawn' and 'Pulp Fiction'), 'Red Apple' cigarettes (non-filtered I hope, again from 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Kill Bill Vol I') to Quentin creepily imposing his foot fetish on us yet again before snapping back with lines like "tasty beverage" (Samuel 'Jules' L. Jackson's verdict on Bret's 'Sprite' in 'Pulp Fiction') and "that's a little more information than we needed to know" (a variation of the Uma Thurman John Travolta exchange from 'Pulp Fiction'), basically a tonne of in-jokes and Tarantino references; 'Death Proof' is a Tarantino film for people who spend way too much time watching Tarantino films.
And if one were compelled to decipher what it all means; I'd say 'Death Proof' is Tarantino at war himself, for Stuntman Mike, like a hipster Hamlet, is plagued with indecision and uncertainty: is he the sadist or the masochist? Q's long-time friend and producer Lawrence Bender once joked that if Quentin hadn't made it as a director, he probably would've become a serial killer, and that's the scenario being played out here. For Mike positively owns the first half, and in many ways, represents Quentin in the 1990s, which could be why a lot of the dialogue sounds a little too-Tarantino for its own good. This was the Quentin Tarantino, or at least the media's caricature, of that time: an ultra violent, vociferous outcast (i.e. Mike recalling cult TV shows no ones ever heard of) who charms a generation with his loquacious banter, and by doing so is given complete control of all those around him (i.e. Rose McGowan's fate, the others just a handbrake & gearshift away from annihilation). This is Tarantino (i.e. Mike) as Zeus in full-on vengeance mode, albeit Zeus in a leather jacket, sporting an Elvis Coiff and exchanging the thunderbolt for a modified Dodge Challenger. In the second half, however, Stuntman Mike is suddenly out of his depth, and looks as if he may be overthrown by the descendants of his own too-cool-for-school legacy. Eclipsed by the shadow of his own genius; essentially outfoxed by gun totting film buffs (i.e. Tarantino's ideal women) and its here that Tarantino (i.e. Mike) becomes the masochist, an event which explains the Russ Meyer-esque absurdity towards the end. Some may even see a vague political reference with the title card: 'Lebanon' on screen long enough to make its Mid-East allusion before the second reveal of 'Lebanon, Texas'. For Stuntman Mike, like Israel in 2006, invades Lebanon with arrogance, aggression & ill intent, only to face a tidal wave of resistance that may wipe him out for good. 'Death Proof' is an enjoyable, though unashamedly trashy, knockdown, drag out affair; not the best film Tarantino's ever made, but an interesting and consistently entertaining ride; though perhaps its time to put the comics away and start the long walk back to the world of serious cinema. Okay ramblers, lets get rambling...
Albert Finney is a surprisingly endearing Churchill in this drama, based on Churchill's own book, of the build up to the Second World War in 1939. Churchill, almost alone, realised that Germany was re-arming in breach of the treaty signed to end the Great War and his warnings were unheeded until almost too late. But this heartwarming story tells us also of the man, with all his vulnerability, and the relationship with the love of his life, Clementine Hosier (Vanessa Redgrave). Unmissable.
Not as good as the first film but then again sequels rarely are. Some of the songs are quite good but then you listen to Sharpay sing and you want to turn off. The story line could have been better and would have been better without Sharpay trying to steal Zac from Gabriella. Then again there were several characters in the sequel from the first film, many of whom were under utilised. Although it was good to see Ryan step out from Sharpay's shadow. Another sequel is planned and it would be good if they either shelve it or do something more original. Another Dirty Dancing/Grease wannabe that should have never been.
Songs: most of them first rate.
Story: 3 Star
Acting: For the most part 4 Star
Overall:3 out of 5
Excellent performance by Jim Davidson, one of the funniest things ever definitely worth watching its so good you can't explain it!
I loved this movie right from the start right to the last second. It makes you smile, laugh, and cry. The dancing in this is amazing. Best film of the year by far!
I was lucky enough to see this the day it was released at the cinema, and liked it so much I bought the DVD the day it was released. The plot is weak, frankly - but then, the plot isn't the point, is it? This movie makes fun of itself, as well as many many other genres and films. A good laugh from beginning to end.
Funniest moment? The moment when Bart finally shows his rude bits..... - a very clever piece of animation which couldn't offend anyone (surely????)
Stick it out to the very end of the credits to hear Maggie's first word. (I don't think this moment was broadcast in the cinema, and can only hope that she is right!)
The cast together with the storyline make this film 5/5 for me. It's a great film for all audiences and one you should definately have in your collection.
Absolutely fabulous!
One of those things that friends kept telling me I had to watch, when I finally gave in I was completely addicted to it by the end of the first episode!
Based, somewhat around the American Dream and the clash when reality gets in the way. Characters are well developed and the writers have the decency to make them real rather than polite and perfect. These characters make mistakes, and they don't always achieve what they want, and personally I love this all the more for that!
Since its release over ten years ago, this Tim Burton masterpiece has fast become a cult favourite as well as a much loved christmas classic that shows the true genius of Tim Burton. The story follows Jack Skellington the hero of halloween town, who one day discovers a portal to Christmas Town and comes up with a plan to take over christmas. However this plan is not as simple as it seems. This dvd is well worth a buy, so prepare for a dark, quirky, romantic, musical extraveganza.
