  • Heroes - Complete Series 1
    Ed Howard 22 Jan 2008

With the mediocre second season of Heroes recently ended prematurely, this box set serves as a potent reminder of what made the First Season so much fun, one of the best shows on American network television. As with nearly any show, not every episode was a stunner, and there were a few weaker character arcs, but on the whole the show nicely balanced mystery, character dynamics, and some thrilling action sequences to craft a perfectly realized tribute to superhero comics and the mythos that makes them special. The creators seemed to realize at this point that the interplay of different personalities gave the show its extra strength -- the cheerful, naive Hiro; the brooding and heroic Peter; the ambiguous position of Nathan, who one senses could be either hero or villain; the power thirst of Sylar. Best of all, there was Noah Bennett, originally a somewhat generic and mysterious villain who developed, over the course of this season, into one of the show's richest and most complex characters, capable of evil but motivated by his great love of his daughter and his genuinely conflicted principles. His spotlight episode, "Company Man," was pretty much unanimously a series high point. These are only a few of the show's great characters, though, and the entire cast performs admirably in the context of a season arc that encompassed adventure, melodrama, and character-based sequences for a perfect blend.

  • Sicko [2007]
    Ed Howard 22 Jan 2008

Michael Moore has taken a lot of flak from all corners for his notoriously loose conception of documentary reality, and this newest film is no exception. He characteristically bends the truth and plays up several sequences for dramatic effect, acting as usual more as a propagandist than a documentary filmmaker. Nevertheless, as long as one keeps this in mind, Sicko is a powerful exploration of the issues behind health care, as well as an impassioned plea for universal coverage and the destruction of the execrable HMO system. Moore's films work so well because he always remains in touch with the human realities of the issues he's addressing, never retreating into mere facts and figures. His visit to Cuba is a perfect example of his approach. On paper, it seems like a grandiose publicity stunt and in some ways rather a cheap shot, but Moore convincingly turns it into a moving and even informative scene, documenting the desperation of many Americans who feel let down by their country's health care system. This film may not be the best source for entirely accurate and unbiased coverage of health care issues, but it is probably the place to turn in order to get a sense of the way those issues affect real people on a day to day basis. This is what Moore is best at, and this film is probably his best yet.

  • Death Proof [2007]
    Ed Howard 22 Jan 2008

With Quentin Tarantino's latest film, originally released as half of the Grindhouse double feature with Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror, he's perfectly captured the spirit of the 1970s B-feature. Two separate casts of chatty girls are pitted against the sinisterly charming Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a villain who stalks and kills girls in his souped-up and reinforced stunt car. The dialogue is Tarantino's distinctive patter, dropping pop culture references and lowkey jokes, and the conversations are punctuated by two car chase sequences of stunning violence and intensity. The final chase scene is a true action epic in itself, where the reality of the stunts (mostly performed without recourse to CGI by real-life stuntwoman Zoe Bell) comes across with teeth-gritting suspense. This grand finale is one of the best car chases of the last few decades, at least, and reason enough to watch and enjoy the film in itself. That this chase results in a powerful thematic turnaround that underscores the surprising feminist thrust of the film is only a bonus, as is the joyful kitsch of the last few shots, which make it near impossible to watch the film without grinning from ear to ear by the end. Tarantino has crafted perhaps his most thrilling and entertaining film, if not quite his best.

  • Ratatouille (Disney Pixar)
    Al MacInnes 22 Jan 2008

You will believe a rat can cook! After all, his mentor, the recently-deceased culinary legend,Chef Gusteau always said: 'Anyone can cook'. Ratatouille is another example of what Pixar can achieve with the 'Incredible' Brad Bird as Head Chef in their computer-driven kitchen. Unless you are troubled by the slightly scattergun accents employed by the voice cast, the film is a pleasure from beginning to end with its slower plot-developing periods rendered worthwhile by the tension created as the fearsome critic, Anton Ego (an outstanding Peter O'Toole) pits his cultured taste-buds and sharp pen against the resurgent reputation of Gusteau's restaurant. Ratatouille is a reminder that people of all ages can still enjoy films with nothing gratuitous in them - except perhaps some mouth-watering...

    Ruth 21 Jan 2008

Oh my god, this film is soo bad, I wasted an hour & a half of my life watching this rubbish that I will never get back, please don't do the same!! I like Clive Owen, I think he is a good British Actor and I can only assume he did not read the script properly when he accepted to do this film. There is not a few particular bad scenes, it all bad, I completely get why this film was only at the cinema for a couple of weeks!!!

  • Belle And Sebastien - The Complete Series [1967]
    Norman Boyd 17 Jan 2008

A children's programme from the late 60s, in black and white and dubbed from French into an English/French mid-Channel accent that is at times laughable!

    Why rate it excellent then?

The naive charm of this series remained stuck in my wife and my own memory from that time to today. As it was so well priced I decided to surprise her and gave it at Christmas. We were not disappointed in the simple story of a boy's love for his dog. The two are inseparable except when a stranger appears in the mountain village, and comes between them. The plot is simple but, as I say, charming, and amazingly still holds our interest today. It's a simple story of love, danger, loyalty and treachery and is timeless.

The stunning scenery of the French/Italian Alps is the backdrop and the characters well rounded, considering the age of the programme. We even caught ourselves humming the theme tune (which, again, had stuck in our memories). As we watched each episode (13 in total) we were looking forward to getting the washing up done and sitting down together!

Oh and our 25 year daughter got hooked as we starting watching it, and our 'cool' son of 19 sat entranced too! Don't tell him this is an 'old' series and in 'black and white' and dubbed - we'll keep it our secret!

  • Cellular [2004]
    Andrew Cooper-Knight 17 Jan 2008

This seemingly simple premise - innocent woman (Kim Basinger) kidnapped and held with nothing but a broken telephone to while away the hours - was a surprising edge-of-your-seat race against time. Chris Evans plays the cool dude who disbelievingly answers his mobile 'phone to hear the traumatised hostage, in fear of her life and that of her family. The fast paced, action is interspersed with some truly antagonising moments, as Chris attempts to outwit Statham's villain. Considering the bargain bucket price of this film, I defy anyone to argue that this is anything but amazing value for money. Avoid the bad weather and curl up with Chris or Kim (or both - the choice is yours !)for less than the price of a cinema ticket !

  • Kill Bill 1 and 2 (Box Set) [2003]
    Luke Higham 15 Jan 2008

Both DVDs were excellent. The films both encorperate the true style of Tarantino, and is a action/thriller for anyone. It comes in a cool box, and is well worth the £7.49 from HMV.

    A really good buy!
