  • Scrubs - Series 5
    Mugsy 05 Jul 2007

What can I say? It is excellent. I felt that series 3 and 4 started to let the series down, but 5 picks it right up again. The series explores Dr Cox a lot more than the previous series. It also explores his relationship with JD. Janitors pranks are excellent, Turk and Carla are building on there marriage, and JD has a girlfriend again, and things seem to go well until.... Well you will have to see. BUY IT!!!

  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe [1 Disc]
    Paula 05 Jul 2007

I read the previous review with some confusion - there is only a voice over if you select the option in setup...her son was correct, there's no narrator in the film, unless you want it.

Excellent film - of course, like with all these things, the book is always better as your imagination is unlimited whereas in films they have a finite length and only so much they can cram in...but as a stand alone film it's lovely! The children are very good actors and the creatures of Narnia are very well done.

A film enjoyed by both parents and children - one we can sit down to watch again and again.

Lovely art, wonderful characters and an interesting story which get children asking lots of questions and letting you tell them about different beliefs and lifestyles. My 4 year old and 2.5year old really enjoy watching it.

Chick flick it may be, but on another rainy English day, while my wife was hard at work, I chucked this in the DVD for a laugh. Funny in places and not a bad story line the film moves along quite well, you get behind the characters in their quest to right a hit song by the deadline. Predictable plot and ending but none the less enjoyable if there is no sport on the box.

  • Cribb [1980]
    Mel 03 Jul 2007

This is a quirky series, not huge budget, but seriously entertaining. The hero is a Victorian police sergeant, a wily detective who is hampered by his well-connected but rather dim superior Inspector Jowett, and aided by his burly and put-upon Constable, Thackeray. The real beauty of these stories is the atmosphere and the detail of Victorian life, the prize fights and the prostitutes, the gaslight and the fog. This is not a mere Sherlock Holmes clone; Cribb is a vibrant individual, a character who takes on a real life of his own, and the mysteries he solves are intriguing to the last. Worth watching.

  • Ghost Rider [Extended]
    Kashif Ahmed 03 Jul 2007

After what seemed like an eternity in post-production, Marvel Comic's cult superhero finally revs up and rides out in Mark Steven Johnson's ('Daredevil') slight, but surprisingly enjoyable, adaptation. I've given this film an extra star for three reasons not necessarily related to its literary or artistic merits as an original work of cinema 1) Ghost Rider is cool 2) I enjoy Nicholas Cage's overacting 3) I'm in love with Eva Mendes, needless to say, if any of the aforementioned are inapplicable to you, just think of this as an average film. Cage is Johnny Blaze, an Evel Kenevel-esque stuntman who makes a desperate deal with the devil ('Easy Rider' Peter Fonda) which quickly turns sour, and before he knows what's hit him; Blaze is press ganged into becoming Satan's bounty hunter, the latest in a long line of Hell spawn henchmen known as Ghost Riders...so far, so ridiculous. I wasn't in the least bit enthused with having Mark Steven Johnson on board as auteur, for 'Daredevil' was quite patchy in spite of good performances from Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner as Elektra. I felt that MSJ swung the mood & tone too far and too often: from dark & atmospheric in one scene to light & breezy in another, coupled with an unnecessarily long origin story, cut in just as the main narrative was gathering momentum.
'Ghost Rider', though saddled with similar attempts at the comedic courtship scene (no see-saw fight this time, but we do get to see Cage riding alongside old flame Eva Mendes's news-van in a long, overacted but ultimately worthwhile scene) is focused, well shot and sets a good pace from the outset. Ghost Rider's origin; well acted by newcomers Matt Long (teenage Nic Cage) and Raquel Alessi (teenage Eva Mendes) is covered in the opening fifteen minutes and provides enough back story to make Johnny Blaze & Roxy Hart's rocky romance seem believable. MSJ handles this somewhat tricky prologue with commendable skill and breviloquence, his artistic flair doesn't let up, for the Ghost Rider itself is something quite special; his flaming skull is up there with The Human Torch & Silver Surfer as one of Marvel's best rendered SFX, for if you dug Spawn taking care of business back in 1997, then you'll certainly get a kick out of seeing our bony, badass biker raising all kinds of hell in the here & now. Nichols Cage imbues his character with some memorable quirks like eating jellybeans from a cocktail glass, drinking black coffee from a jug and listening to 'The Carpenters' before a big jump, for only Nic Cage's deadpan delivery could sell a line like: "sshhh: you're steppin' on Karen". Johnny Blaze's hilarious attempts at evoking his alter ego in front of the mirror also allow Cage an opportunity to unleash his distinct brand of manic humour/ method overacting; his wide-eyed gurning / teeth gnashing tomfoolery works a charm, natch, and the scene is on a par with Toby Maguire's web tryouts in 'Spiderman'. Essentially an urban western, Ghost Rider's supporting cast add an oddball sentiment to this already bizarre, but strangely beautiful, picture. Now if this had this been a Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez film, the role of old cowboy/ narrator Caretaker would've gone straight to Michael Parkes, nonetheless, Sam Elliot (Major Ross in 'Hulk') works well and has one of the best, most commanding voices in the business. Wes Bentley also crops up as the pasty faced villain Blackheart, personally, I don't know what Wes is doing here, or why the breakthrough actor of 1999 ('American Beauty') is wearing mascara and spouting lines that would embarrass any B-movie hack. Eva Mendes plays to her obvious strengths and, as seen in 'Hitch', has good comic timing and delivery.
Its refreshing to see a comic book movie that doesn't take itself too seriously without falling into the trap of 'Batman & Robin'-esque banality, for whilst 'Ghost Rider' doesn't really deserve a sequel, it's a fun ride while it lasts. And any movie that has the camp, cheese-driven chutzpah to play Johnny Cash's timeless ballad 'Ghost Riders In The Sky' (albeit a lame cover) as the actual Ghost Rider blazes past, deserves some credit. Supernatural silliness aplenty, but fine SFX, an involving storyline and Nicholas Cage at his best (worst) ensure a ghostly good time is had by all.

Great light entertainment for the whole family - the main charachter Tim is just like my husband...lucky me?!?

  • Planet Earth (BBC TV Series) - 5 Disc Box Set
    susannah deuk 30 Jun 2007

Fantastic action, amazing footage, beautiful landscapes and some weird and rare animals. It feels like you are watching a film filled with special effects but this is all real. Filmed with specialist photography and a narrative from David Atenborough, this series provides you with a unique look into the bio-diversity that surrounds us. Expect an explosion for the senses that will give you a glimpse of how magnificent the earth we live on really is and a sense of how small we are considering the impact that we have on the environment. I can promise you that this is a journey you won't forget easily and will have you returning to watch again and again. Quite simply - stunning.

  • Charmed Complete Seasons 1- 8 (Limited Magic Chest edition)
    Cursed 30 Jun 2007

I've now returned two of these with faulty discs in them, different discs each time I might add and the second wooden chest had misaligned hinges, so I'd say not of the highest quality. It is my experience that Paramount does a very sloppy job of DVD production, both in content and the physical creation of the discs.

  • The Proclaimers - The Best Of 1987-2002
Oscar David Huckle 25 Jun 2007

Good album. Oh Jean, Cap in hand, Sunshine on Leith, What makes you cry, Throw the R away, Ghost of love and Doodle Song are brilliant.
    Good album. 9/10

  • Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire [2005]
Oscar David Huckle 25 Jun 2007

BEST OF THE FOUR!!! This was excellent. Gleeson was outstanding, so was Fiennes, Oldman, Spall, Isaacs, Tennant, Richardson and Rickman. It was dark and scary.
I was also impressed to see that this movie was finally a 12A. This is not for children! You will love it.
Sorry, 1, but you lost! This is the best, and so was 1st.
    Watch it on TV/DVD as soon as possible. 9 1/2 / 10

  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Two Disc Edition) [2004]
Oscar David Huckle 25 Jun 2007

THIS IS THE WORST OF THE THREE!!! For a start, Michael gambon has taken Richard Harris's role (as Harris died) and there is no John Cleese.
David Thewlis was the wrong man for Remus Lupin. The horror is too little and Rupert grint was not as good as he usally is.
I don't know, you might like it. 5/10

  • Futurama Seasons 1-4 Complete Box Set
    Matt Davidson 25 Jun 2007

"Space. It seems to go on and on forever, but then you get to the end and a Gorilla starts throwing barrels at you." is not how you start a conventional television show, but then Futurama isn't conventional television... From the man who gave The Simpsons to the world, Matt Groening (got to love that first name), what we have is a vision of the future which, though different, isn't really that far removed from where we are now - probably typified by the fate that befalls our protagonist Fry when he gets given his permanent career assignment.
If you love sci-fi, comedy, and animation that references classic shows like Star Trek, then Futurama is a must!

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Two Disc Widescreen Edition) [2002]
Oscar David Huckle 25 Jun 2007

Before jumping to any hasty conclusions, I would like to announce that the first Harry Potter was much better. Yes, Jason Isaacs was pretty good as Lucius Malfoy. It was far too scary for the little kids.
The battle in the depths of the chamber of secrets was brilliant and well layed out. This was a prety good movie, but as I said, you might be dissapointed.

  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Two Disc Widescreen Edition) [2001]
Oscar David Huckle 25 Jun 2007

This is a good start to the series. Perfect actors and actresses and good follow on with the plot.
Alan Rickman and Ian Hart have done an outstanding job on their role. Usally, I hate witchcraft and wizardry, this was one of the first films/stories that really catched me.
The villians were well done, in my view this movie should have been a 12A because of fantasy horror, but kids seem to like it how it is, I have no trouble in that!!!! 7/10

  • The Mummy [1999]
Oscar David Huckle 24 Jun 2007

This is such a good movie. It is funny and horror at the same time. It is one laugh after the other.
Kevin J O'connor is so good at Beni, all I wish is that he did not die at the end because in case there was going to be a second part of the series, I would have wanted him to be in there.
The action scenes are pretty well done. I wish it was longer. After five minutes the movie really goes into depth and you can't wait to find out what is going to happen next.
Thank you, Stephen Sommers. I wish you good luck with your upcoming movies. 9/10

  • Flushed Away
Oscar David Huckle 24 Jun 2007

I saw this movie in the cinemas back in 2006. I wanted to see this, not because of the plot, but because of the actors and actresses.
The movie in all was pretty good and well layed out. Good use of humor especially Jean Reno.
    Good movie, 7/10

  • Casino Royale [2006]
Oscar David Huckle 24 Jun 2007

I borrowed this movie from my aunt, for about a month, and in that month, this was one of my top ten movies. Daniel Craig is just the right person for James Bond, but Eva Green is not good at all for the Bond girl. There is too much sexual relationship between her and James Bond which spoils the movie. Judi Dench was brilliant as M and so was Mads Mikkelsen.
Some people think that Pierce Brosnan was best as Bond, I diagree. I disagree because those movies were done about 5-10 years ago. Not much action at all.
    Good movie, 8/10.

  • Pirates Of The Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest [2006]
Oscar David Huckle 24 Jun 2007

I recently wrote a review on the 1st movie of the triology. My family and I watched this movie in the cinemas. As I said, I hated the first movie, so I knew not to expect the best out of this movie, but when I saw this movie, I was blasted. The acting was much better and Gore Verbinski expressed a different side of piracy. Johnny Depp was excellent in this movie which was a big difference, so was Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Jack Davenport had a bigger part. In this movie, Verbinski put in new characters, I must admit nobody could have chosen a better role for Davy Jones and Lord Cutler Beckett. Stellan Skarsgard played as Bootstrap Bill, Will's father and did an okayish job.
I reccomend this to anyone who hated the first one. Yes, people who loved the first one will probably think this is not as good as the first one, but my point of view has been done. Brilliant movie! 8/10
