  • See No Evil [2006]
    Leon Finch 22 Feb 2007

Fans of WWE star Kane will lap this up as Glen Jacobs gets to turn his WWE character up a few notches in this by the numbers shocker.
There's nothing new here for horror/shocker fans and even though the WWE plays it safe as usual, Jacobs should be commended for providing a menacing presence (the only worthwhile character in the movie).
Rental job really, unless you are a Kane fan or WWE completist in which case wait a couple of months and you'll bag it for a fiver...

  • New Police Story
    Kashif Ahmed 21 Feb 2007

After a string of non-starters in Hollywood, Hong Kong legend Jackie Chan returns to his roots for another exciting, albeit unusually sombre, instalment of the 'Police Story' franchise. The plot, though primarily a means to an end for Chan to showcase his martial arts expertise, is saddled with a lot of exposition. Not a par with 1988"s 'Police Story 2' and lacking the novelty value of 'Police Story 3: Supercop' 'NPS' still marks a much deserved return to form for the humble, and hugely talented Chinese superstar.

  • Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2 Disc Special Edition)
    Kashif Ahmed 21 Feb 2007

Captain Jack Sparrow returns in fine style with this enjoyable sequel to the surprise 2003 hit. It's obvious that the original (mildly amusing but by no means the classic its made out to be) was meant as a star vehicle for then flavours-of-the-month; Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley. Hell, Miss Knightley, much to the delight of male audiences worldwide, even walked the plank and got drenched for us, but when Johnny Depp stole the show, well; corporate fiends Bruckheimer and 'Disney' aren"t idiots, and knew full well that 'POTC2' would have to be all about Jack.
And about Jack it is; the plot is functionary at best, though The British Empire (i.e. 'The East India Company') make for good, boo-worthy villains and sit surprisingly well alongside the plethora of outlandish characters that adorn every reel of this picture. Its all standard summer blockbuster fare: Sparrow has to find 'The Dead Man"s Chest' of the title in order to free himself from a debt to Davy Jones (he of Davy Jones"s locker fame). Jones ,sporting a brilliantly realised CG squid-head, is played with aplomb by Bill Nighy whilst Stellan Skarsagrd turns up as one of his condemned crew; equally fishy with all manner of aquatic life meshed into him.
The movie rolls along at a nice pace (despite clocking in at an epic 150 mins) and has enough swash & buckle, witty one-liners and oceanic bizarreness to keep you entertained. Kiera and Orlando are competent enough, and despite one unexpected twist, its pretty much plain sailing all the way. I didn"t particularly like the slapstick comedy, though Depp is always great to watch: "They"ll be no knowing here". I"ve said it before, and I"ll say it again: the Academy are obviously mad, for they gave Depp an Oscar nod for 'POTC' but not for 'Donnie Brasco', 'The Brave', 'Ed Wood' 'Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas' or fifteen years worth of stellar performances in great films. The way I see it; is that they"ve always liked Depp, but like him a little more now that he's bringing in the money. Lightweight fare that"s raking in a lot more than pieces of eight (this being the fastest grossing blockbuster of all time) 'POTC2' was a far more enjoyable an experience on the big screen than it is at home; downsizing the spectacle only serves to highlight the film"s narrative shortcomings and the fact that very little actually happens, and in that respect, it remains loyal its source of inspiration. I'm not tthat keen on seeing the third instalment, but I probably will. Hide the rum, here comes the sequel.

  • Brick [2006]
    Kashif Ahmed 21 Feb 2007

Inventive and entertaining high-school set homage to the 1940s film noir; Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the mini-Marlowe out to find his ex-girlfriend, decipher clues and break though the convoluted machinations of numerous thugs, femme fatales and authority figures. 'Brick' plays film noir like 'Bugsy Malone' did gangster pics, only does it with a straight-faced cynicism that"s straight out of the Dale Cooper School of detective work. May not stand up to repeated viewings, but a clever script, cracking dialogue and fine performances make it an excellent, must see picture.

  • Alone In The Dark
    Kashif Ahmed 19 Feb 2007

In many ways, this is the real 'Clerks 2', forget Randal & Dante, its Christian Slater & Stephen Dorff who"re fast becoming Hollywood"s biggest underachievers. And though I didn"t hate this film with as great a passion as is often displayed on many an internet movie forum, 'Alone In The Dark' (probably a reference to the scriptwriter"s working conditions) is a master class in lazy filmmaking. Adapted from the Atari computer game franchise by Germany"s answer to Paul W.S. Anderson; Uwe Boll ('House Of The Dead', 'Blood Rayne'), the movie, after a lengthy bit of pre-credit exposition, sees ex-'Bureau 713' (like 'The X-Files') operative turned paranormal investigator Slater being pursued by all manner of sinister forces who"re after some mysterious and powerful artefact that holds an ancient secret. Slater"s joined by archaeologist girlfriend Tara Reid and initially hampered by cocky 713 agent and company man, Stephen Dorff (making the best of a rather pathetic role). 'Alone In The Dark' is a bit like 'The Relic' meets 'Nightwatch' be sure to look out some intentionally hilarious moments, the best of which is an unexpected love scene between Salter and Reid played out to Nenah Cherry and Youssou N'Dour"s '7 Seconds' (surely not a sly dig at Slater"s lasting power in the sack?). An undemanding, largely unimpressive film which ought to be sandwiched between some quality horror flicks as part of a movie marathon. Lights out.

  • Havoc [2005]
    Kashif Ahmed 19 Feb 2007

Award winning writer/director Stephen Gagen"s scripts often fluctuate from the excellent ('Syrianna') to the downright execrable ('Rules Of Engagement') 'Havoc', an urban teen morality tale, falls somewhere in-between; its largely ridiculous, but breezes by without doing too much damage. Eagle eyed viewers would have spotted the narrative embryo for 'Havoc' in Erika Christensen"s subplot from Gagen"s neo-realist drugs drama 'Traffic'. The idea of bored, rich white girls intrigued and voluntarily corrupted by the seedy, urban (i.e. Black or Hispanic) underworld, is realised via the whiter-than-white Anne Hathaway (playing against type) and indie favourite Bijou Phillips. Freddy Rodriquez (later seen in the excellent 'Harsh Times') manages to rise above the script"s limitations and turns a clichéd mouthpiece into a believable character, whilst director, and Academy award winning documentation, Barbara Koppple, ultimately seems to accept the fact that this movie"s only selling point is going to be Anne Hathaway in the buff. I wonder how 'Havoc' would"ve turned out had Jessica Kaplan, who was tragically killed in a 2003 plane crash aged just 24, been called in to look over Gagen"s screenplay; she wrote the story back in 1999 and may"ve bought it up to speed a little. For the most part, 'Havoc' is stylised, pretentious, preachy twaddle that rarely delves into the issues it brings up, and is thus little more than a mildly entertaining exploitation movie harbouring delusions of socio-political importance. Chaotic.

  • I Want To Live [1958]
michael anthony rutt 16 Feb 2007

Hey guys this Hayward broad was a really sexy lady and whats more the talent can act! and how!!
Add a moody and exciting small combo and big band jazz sountrack and some striking black and white photography and bingo this disc is a real corker!
This is one searing drama that really proves the old adage "they dont make 'em like that anymore!"
Susan grabbed a coveted little statuette for her laudable histrionics and sent that years competition scurrying hotfoot into the undergrowth!
What's more it's a true story folks and surreal as it sometimes is shows that truth sometimes is mighty stranger than fiction......??!!
Despite some tuly harrowing scenes towards the end of this movie when little old Susie faces "justice"in a chamber fuelled by your favourite local energy supplier, this is one mean flick that will stay with you long after those credits roll.
Two thumbs up and a neat bourbon recommended
along with a giant pack of Pringles to sweeten the bitter taste those final scenes will surely induce.....

  • Office Space [1999]
    Stephen Springate 16 Feb 2007

What makes a film an iconic one? Good acting, good storyline? Nope, that can make a classic film but not an iconic one. In fact, there doesn't have to be anything good about an iconic film, it just has to be carried by fan power. This is exactly what 'Office Space' is.
When I was seeing it, I began to be dissapointed. The music was annoying, the storyline was dragging and it wasn't even that funny.
But when I finished the movie, there was something about it that made me want to see it again. And again. So what made it so brilliant that it had to be watched again? Storyline? No. Laugh a minute? No. It is the undeniable charm that this movie radiated and its the characters that anyone who is forced to work in cubicle hell will relate to. Everyone can point out a character that reminds them of someone in their office, and people who don't work in an office will still be able to fall in love with these colourful and lavishly created people. As proof of this, I loved all these characters, and i'm 14 and have never been anywhere near an american office.
This is not a film with a storyline, this a film with people, people who will easily dominate the screen and will fill your minds for hours after you have seen it. This film is probably the nearest live action version of the cartoon 'Dilbert'
So, I fully recomend you watch, and even if you don't enjoy it and are ready to walk out after a while, I beg you to stick to the end and you will be able to see why 'Office Space' is truly regarded as a classic

  • Clerks 2 [2006]
    Leon Finch 12 Feb 2007

If you are easily offended, go buy the latest wishy-washy romcom and save yourself the pain.
If you are a bit less uptight or a fan of all thing View Askew, then dive on in - this is Smith's funniest yet.
There was much fear in the air with the whiff of the fairly mainstream Jersey Girl still around and the original Clerks being sacred ground, but Smith gives a big **** you to all that and again works his genius with these characters.
In many ways its a shame that Smith will be forever limited to these characters as it would be fun to see him try his hand at horror or finally getting a comic film gig, but when he serves up treats like this, well, you cant really complain.
If you want to see a bit of interspecies erotica or understand the true meaning of pillow-pants, dive in..
Along with Borat (for different reasons), the funniest film of last year, remember to watch Clerks first though and impress your friends with your in-joke knowledge!
    Brilliant

  • The Devil Wears Prada [2006]
    dave howitt 12 Feb 2007

in the opening Devil wears prada appears to be another 'chick flick' But i feel that theres something for everyone (especially couples)i found the story interesting and even related to entering a new job in my own life. Meryl streep portrays the hard face at work - with emotion at home character across very well. There is no overwhelming houmor here - but the sniggers were there! im glad the film also touched on the personal lives of miranda & andy because that provided the right mix for me. great support from emily blunt as emily. this is a dvd that wont be stuck at the back of my cupboard.

  • The Aristocrats [2005]
    Michael Pereira 11 Feb 2007

Many of the famous comedians of our era, from Whoopi Goldberg, George Carlin and Eric Idol come together to talk about the comedian's joke; this is no joke for an ordinary person. The Aristocrats is said to go back to the turn of the 20th Century; it is comedy's best kept secret, and now you can join the secret club.
There are many different interpretations of the joke from the expert comedians, and an analysis as to why they are funny; and how this joke which, after a century, is still strong and made relevant to people of today.
What's the joke? I'll tell you the general features:
    i. A person walks into a talent agency
ii. The person says to the agent; 'I've got the greatest act for you, ever! It's a family act'
iii. The talent scout replies: 'We aren't really looking for family acts, I'm sorry'
iv. The person says 'please, this is a brilliant act, if you give us a moment to show you we promise you will like it.'
    v. Okay, lets see it then...
vi. (the act changes from different interpretations, as the act ends, the talent scout replies): Wow, that's something! What do you call an act like that?
    vii. THE ARISTOCRATS!
You won't understand why that is funny just from the above. That is the beauty of the joke.
If you are of gentle temperament and very sensitive to jokes about social groups or serious issues; then DON'T watch this. If you want your humour to be challenged, or you are already pretty sick, or, you love freedom of speech WATCH THIS NOW. I promise it will change the way you look at humour, forever.

  • Doctor Who : Series 1 Volume 1 [2005]

a solid start to the 'new' series, although episode 3 is inclined to rely on special effects rather than a decent plot!

    Stacey Spiteri 04 Feb 2007

  • Snatch --Superbit [2000]
    Jamie Harris 31 Jan 2007

This is such a good film...
The start confused me when its showing some Rabbis and I was like "Great film". However, It turns out to be excellent. The storyline is that there had been a dimond robbery and now everyone is after it. Brad Pitt makes an apperance shortly into the film as a piki, who we later find out is a bare knuckle boxing champion. It has to be one of the funniest films I have seen so far! A lot of people get shot and killed in it and it is really unrealistic so, I think that's what makes it so funny! Somehow the gangsters of this town run into the wimps and the pikis. It's got such a simple storyline but yet, hilarious because of the random jokes!

  • Harsh Times
    Kashif Ahmed 30 Jan 2007

Christian Bale delivers another powerful performance as disturbed, mildly psychotic, 'war on terror' veteran Jim David, in writer/director David 'Training Day' Ayer"s bleak, brutal but brilliant L.A. set drama. Jim and best friend Mike, an unemployed IT worker played with aplomb by Freddy Rodriguez, spend their days driving around South Central, meeting shady characters, drinking and scoring weed when they should be looking for work. 'Harsh Times' is in the same vein as returning veteran stories like 'The Best Days Of Our Lives' or 'Taxi Driver' whilst taking in the full blowback of what institutional dehumanisation can do to an ordinary, even talented, man like Jim. Some will recall that similar themes were last explored in another excellent, L.A. based thriller: 'Falling Down', and in many ways, 'Harsh Times' is a modern day companion piece to that film: An engrossing, fast paced character study with a poignant anti-war message, clarified in the devastating final act; when Bale"s fate serves to answer a question posed by Rodriquez earlier in the film. Nothing less than a modern classic.

  • Inside Man
    Kashif Ahmed 30 Jan 2007

After a three-year hiatus, writer/director Spike Lee returns with his first big screen outing since 'She Hate Me', and his forth collaboration with living legend Denzel Washington. The controversial New Yorker has never been one to opt out for the obvious, so it should come as no surprise that 'Inside Man', a slick, high-concept heist thriller about corporate machinations during an armed bank robbery/ hostage situation, is unlike anything Lee"s ever done before.
Clive Owen is well cast as the master criminal, (Owen"s measured monotone and deadpan delivery works better here than it did in 'Children Of Men' or 'Closer'), a pencil moustached Denzel Washington could play suave, & intelligent in his sleep, but still manages to inject his negotiator cop character with life and humour, though Washington"s sharp suited attrite is, in a bizarre fashion faux pas, not dissimilar to the snazzy get up he had on in 1940s set film noir 'Devil In A Blue Dress'. Jodie Foster, an actress who usually bores me, is back as a force to be reckoned with: Foster"s elusive company woman is perfectly suited to partner the bank"s shady owner; Arthur Case (another strong supporting role for Christopher Plummer) as 'Inside Man' slips from genre to genre with relative ease.
My only criticism here, besides the somewhat unremarkable plot twist, would be Lee"s recently acquired habit for occasionally over-directing a scene, hence creating a style over substance scenario (which also marred '25th Hour'). For a mainstream thriller, 'Inside Man' is actually strongest in its quiet, stagier, moments between cops, criminals, hostages and power brokers. Spike Lee"s best years as a serious writer/ director seem to be behind him, after all, where do you go after the timeless masterpiece that was 'Malcolm X'? And though the last Lee films I really liked were 'He Got Game' and the unloved 'Summer Of Sam', 'Inside Man' is well-made, undemanding entertainment, albeit from a director from whom we"ve come to expect a little more. See it before they make the sequel.

  • Dawn Of The Dead [2004]
    Kashif Ahmed 30 Jan 2007

Nurse Sarah Polley, security guard Ving Rhames and others fight the plague of killer zombies infesting their town; this slick, fast paced horror serves up a heady mix of action, gore and suspense. And though this remake seems to unintentionally invert the original"s satire on mindless consumerism (in director Zach Synder"s world; the mall is an irony-free refuge / stronghold) 'Dawn Of Dead' packs just enough gore, humour and action to eclipse Romero"s original. I"m not a big fan of zombie films in general (as they"re always funnier than they should be), and out of the recent genre revival, only '28 Days Later' stood out for me, until now, 'Dawn Of The Dead' is the new standard bearer for all zombie flicks to come, almost as much fun as playing 'House Of The Dead' at the arcades. See it.

  • Walk The Line (Single Disc)
    Allegra Etheridge 26 Jan 2007

Love sure ain"t what it used to be.... and when June Carter (Reese Witherspoon) gets caught in Johnny Cash's (Joaquin Phoenix) guitar strap, you know that 'trouble's a-coming'. Academy Award Winner for Best Actress in 2005, for her part in 'Walk the Line,' Reese gives a master-class in playing hard to get. Her will-power keeping Johnny at arms length is stellar. Her elusive charms lead him to get so wild with sexual tension that he pulls the sink out of his dressing room wall, following it up with a cocktail of pills and drink. Reese"s performance is effortless but you can't help thinking that she's not really that stretched. On the other hand, Joaquin portrays a soulful Johnny Cash in and out of the emotional abyss - tormented addict, star, husband, lover and disturbed son of critical father. Sophisticated Joaquin doesn't quite convince as 'hick from the sticks' as he glowers into the bed-posts in his family"s shack at the start of the movie. However, later he more than makes up for it as he embraces his favourite role - the anti-hero. Although the songs are dated and the music and acquired taste, the actors bring them alive by their authentic interpretations. Humour comes from the juxtaposition of the normality of the lives of the parents of their rock 'n' roll offspring. For men, it"s time to see the ultimate rebel carve out his own path and career and for the women, it"s a seminar in taming that wild man...
