  • To Live And Die In L.A. [1985]
    Stuart D. 24 Jul 2009

Willem Dafoe and William Petersen provide a captivating tale of how far a crime agent will go to catch the perpetrator.
Stylishly filmed and told at a rate the story keeps your attention of the twists and turns, the story deviates a little but not enough for loss of attention.
The main intention of the Director is not lost.
The gist is that every one plays everyone,no character goes unhurt or has the same perspective as the story goes on.
The car chase is a good one as car chases go,well filmed and not too long.
It is central to the plot and not just stuck in there.
Support characters are good and strongly emphasise their roles in the storyline.
All in all a good flick, some content may be inappropriate for the young or very young and adherence to the age restriction is advised.
    10/10

  • Manhunter [1986]
    Stuart D. 24 Jul 2009

This original Manhunter movie is an atmospheric masterpiece.
It features the brilliant Brian Cox as Hannibal Lector and William Petersen as Will Graham.
It follows the Behavioural Science of the target serial killer and the procedures followed by the authorities and the various staff at their disposal to apprehend the culprit.
Early on it is established that the lead male is a family man, resposnsible and protective of his charges.
However it comes to the fore that the lead character is also uniquely talented as to be able to think like a serial killer.
The culprit in question is the Tooth Fairy,a particularly sadistic and psycotic character.
Petersen gives a performance of note since this was way before the CSI was even thought of,this movie conveys the essence of a good story.
The plot is laid out before you and the charcters slowly come together in a climax,it is violent and depictions of torture are prevalent.Character development is good and if there's anything else to say is that this film holds the quality of a Michael Mann production to a high standard.
    10/10
This movie is not for the young or very young.

    Pre CSI serial killer drama.

  • Harold And Kumar Get The Munchies [2004]
    Ross Sayers 23 Jul 2009

Good stoner comedies don't roll around that often, given that their target market doesn't really require much in the way of stimulus. Harold and Kumar Get The Munchies (aka .Go To White Castle - US title), I believe, is one such film that will please all comedy lovers, if they give it a chance. Harold and Kumar (John Cho and Kal Penn) are two best friends who, after getting high, head out on a fantastic adventure in the search of their favourite fast food restaurant. While on this journey they face many obstacles: racist police officers, a God-loving redneck named "Freakshow", and an angry racoon. Just stop me when it starts sounding silly (don't worry, it's the good kind of silly). The filmmakers aren't in any doubt that this film is anything other than a comedy, and so don't bother with any morals or realisations. Just a funny movie, with funny scenes, one after another. A large part of this film's success is due to the wonderfully believable relationship between the odd couple of Cho and Penn's characters. Cho as the sensible and always nervous Harold, and Penn as the relaxed, never worried Kumar. The ongoing comedic bickering allows the audience to fully accept these two guys have known each other for years, and care about how things turn out for them, however bizarre things get. My personal favourite scene involves the two bonding over a power ballad, showing their sensitive sides, while staying hilarious. The film does touch upon the subject of racism (the aforementioned police officers just one of the offenders), but does not seek to try and change people's minds or resolve the issue, instead using it to highlight the stupidity of these people and add to the comedy of the film. Another highlight for me was a cameo from Neil Patrick Harris, portraying a drugged-up, sex-crazed version of himself. It is always refreshing to see celebrities being able to laugh at themselves, and Harris certainly can - stealing all his scenes with a morally bankrupt persona and extremely filthy language. Harold and Kumar Get The Munchies won't challenge your brain much, but it stays consistently funny throughout, and has definite re-watch value. The disc also contains a bunch of extras, including 3 commentaries, deleted scenes, outtakes and an in-car interview with Cho and Penn. With a sequel under their belt, and a third film on the way, Harold and Kumar are going strong. And I, for one, am very happy about it.

  • Die Hard 4.0 [Blu-ray] [2007]
    Garreth Forrest 23 Jul 2009

You know the drill by now - McClane is forced into doing stuff he doesn't want to do/no one else will do it. Again.

Be warned this version is heavily cut over the unrated edition.

Picture and sound quality is superb (as expected) but the poor editing at times shows the actor's mouths saying something more ruder than what you hear.

The final 10mins although daft is a home cinema feast as bullets, explosions, the big rig and the plane rumble the subwoofer and rear speakers to full effect BUT I can't help feel somewhat cheated by the "Yippee ki yay mother- BANG" hear.

Bruce knows this role inside out so just goes through the motions, Timothy Olyphart (or however you say it) is no Alan Rickman and lacks the threat of a decent villian. Watchable but instantly forgettable.

  • South Park - Series 1
    Ross Sayers 21 Jul 2009

Everyone has seen South Park at some point or another. You only need to see one scene to know if you're a massive fan, or completely disgusted. The brainchild or Trey Parker and Matt Stone has been entertaining and offending for years. This first season may not be as strong as later years, but it is still a real gem of a show. My favourite episodes from this season include: "Damien" - a colossal fight between the Devil and Jesus, and "Cartman's Mom Is A Dirty Slut" - the quest to find Cartman's father, with a nail-biting cliffhanger. This DVD set also includes a couple of music videos, and an exclusive scene with Jay Leno. A large number of people will brush it aside as too crude or too immature, but those who appreciate it are greatly rewarded. In 1997, it was the "thing" to see. In 2009, it is still the "thing" to see.

  • Six Feet Under: The Complete First Series
    Ross Sayers 20 Jul 2009

A drama about a family funeral home, you say? That can't be very enjoyable, can it? Well, yes. Yes it can. Alan Ball, the man behind "American Beauty", brings us his darkly comical look at the death business. As each episode opens, a new customer beckons for Fisher & Sons, bringing new challenges, grieving families and ways for the employees to face their own morality. Where other shows are plot-heavy and fail to fully distinguish characters, Six Feet Under comes into its own. As each episode passes we are given a deeper look at this family, how they cope with this lifestyle, and how it affects their attitude towards death. Ball frequently uses dream sequences to show what characters really want to say, or hear, to hit home how awkward the family relationships are. These characters are about as well written as you're likely to see on TV, and are thankfully played just as well by a terrific ensemble cast. The standouts, for me, are Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause as the Fisher brothers, and Frances Conroy as their naïve, doting mother. The series has a sombre tone, but there are constant comic moments to emphasise the strangeness of it all: they may be constantly surrounded by death, but they don't let that keep them down. Each episode clocks in at around 55 minutes (a fast 55 minutes) and although there are no cliffhangers or unbelievable twists, I found myself riveted by every episode, and very willing to add it to my favourite TV shows of all time. Six Feet Under - it makes death enjoyable.

  • The Comeback - Season 1
    Joe 20 Jul 2009

'The Comeback' is a 'mockumentary' of Reality Television. This series follows ex-tv star Valerie Cherish (Lisa Kudrow) who has had a non-existent acting career since previous successes on the sitcom:'I'm It', which was cancelled over a decade ago. 'The Comeback' is the title of a reality tv show following her comeback to 'fame' after landing a part on a new sitcom, 'Room and Bored.' The series is comprised of the Raw Footage for the reality show and is basically the viewer watching the unedited life of Valerie and her works to promote herself in her comeback "with dignity" and find success once more through featuring on the new sitcom.

It's a cringingly funny series, with most of the laughs stemming from the ever camera-conscious Valerie, and the situations she gets herself into. Comically unable to get over the way things were and how things were done "on It," she manages to make some enemies as well as friends in her new job creating the typical dramatic climaxes that reality tv strives to provide. In addition, the ensemble cast all bring priceless comedic value to the series.

Within 'The Comeback' the dialogue and interaction of the characters makes them convincing and believable as real people and it is arguably this that draws the viewer to share in the highs and lows of Valerie's entire experience of reality television; and care for her as a person whether you like her personality or not! Lisa Kudrow does a brilliant job proving that she can do a lot more than ever evident as Phoebe on 'Friends.' The detail in each scene also makes for a great re-watch value. This was a thoroughly fun and enjoyable series, that leaves you wanting more.

In terms of special features there are two special interviews with Valerie (and Mickey) which amount to about half a normal episode. There are also episode commentaries for six of the thirteen episodes including two with Lisa Kudrow, one with Valerie Cherish (classic!), and three with co producer to Kudrow: Michael P King. These commentaries are both witty and informative and add something new to each episode.

This series was an unexpected but pleasant discovery and leaves me feeling that it's a shame that this never got renewed for another series.

  • Star Trek XI (1-Disc Edition) [DVD]
    Editor Review 17 Jul 2009

    Verdict
With its strong storyline, fantastic visuals and superb performances, Star Trek XI will delight life-long Trekkies and new fans alike. This film is genuinely impressive, it's not only funny and exciting, but also emotionally touching too! One of the best Sci-fi titles to date!

  • Invasion
    John Flaherty 16 Jul 2009

Invasion only lasted the one season with 22 episodes back in 2005. Since its cancellation Invasion has built up quite a following and people are even calling for a second season to be sanctioned. The story line starts with a strong hurricane named Eve that strikes the area of Homestead, which damages buildings and results in people disappearing and hurt. While the hurricane is at its peak, strange lights are seen falling from the sky and landing in the surrounding swamps, rivers and lakes. In the event we are introduced to a quite dysfunctional family. Russell (Eddie Cibrian) is a Park Ranger (I think that's the title) and has two children, Jesse (Evan Peters) who is sixteen and Rose (Ariel Gade) who is seven-ish. They live with Russell's new wife Larkin (Lisa Sheridan), who is a pregnant reporter and her conspiracy obsessed brother Dave (Tyler Labine). The other main character is the town sheriff Tom Underlay (William Fichtner), his wife Dr Mariel Underlay (Kari Matchett) and Tom's daughter Kira (Alexis Dziena) who is seventeen. The dysfunction is due to Dr Underlay being Russell's ex-wife and mother to his two children, throughout the show custody of the children is shared to begin with and then later debated.

During the hurricane Dr Underlay goes in search of her daughter and disappears into the woods. The next day Sheriff Underlay finds his wife naked on the shore of a lake and following CPR she awakens and is taken to hospital. She soon realises that not all is what it seems and as others who are found in and around lakes, rivers and swamps, start to behave oddly Dr Underlay fears for herself and her family. Throughout the season Sheriff Underlay is depicted as being quite shifty and involved with the conspiracy. Larkin's brother Dave is the one who attempts to show everyone what is going on and throughout the show gets into his own adventures that eventually lead to the others believing the truth.

The show starts off very exciting and grips the viewer from the beginning. Unfortunately the problem with starting the show in the middle of a hurricane is that viewers will expect there to be more and more similar dramatic scenes. This doesn't happen, and it becomes evident that the producers probably spent most of the budget on the opening episode. The five main characters in Russell, Larkin, Dr Underlay, Sheriff Underlay and Dave are quite entertaining and do a good job in keeping the viewer entertained. Unfortunately throughout the season I feel that the writers involve the teenagers just a bit too much. This starts to grate as it goes on and it becomes evident that the writers are trying to aim at a younger audience to improve ratings. I for one am not bothered about caring for attention seeking teens and feel that if I did I'd go and buy a Dawson's Creek or The Hills box set. I feel that this uncertainty as to what genre the show is adds to the confusion as to where the show is going and to how it will end. Toward the end of the show the plot and atmosphere seems to be confused as to which route to follow. It has the same feel as Lost (of which it uses the same music) but unfortunately it doesn't grip you as it should. It almost seems like the writers are testing new ideas to see if it will prolong the series and in doing so add odd twists that have no relevance to the progress of the show. I think 22 episodes was a bit of a long shot for the idea of the show and I for one was not surprised when it was cancelled.

William Fichtner (Sheriff Underlay) and Dave (Tyler Labine) are by far the more interesting characters and as the show goes on you tend to look out for them more so than the others. William Fichtner and Tyler Labine have managed to go on to better things following their appearances in Invasion, with David Fichtner becoming one of the main cast members of Prison Break and Tyler Labine landing a regular role in the new series Reaper. These two actors seem to have been the only people to have succeeded after the shows demise. As the series develops it becomes evident that the theme of the show is more "Invasion of the body snatchers" than Lost. The big finale involves yet another hurricane in which nothing major happening until after the carnage. Although the ending is unsurprising it does suit what the show is all about and that is an average sci-fi drama series that is worth a look, but not worth rushing home for.

  • Torchwood - Children of Earth [DVD] [2009]
    Craig Black 15 Jul 2009

    Brilliant brilliant brilliant!

Most people who wpould have watched this would totally agree with giving it 10/10. the action was edge of the seat watching and emotional enough to make me cry!!! not forgetting how realistic it is to the government (my mum even paused it to ant about the government).
Seriously for me its the TV highlight of the year... no of the DECADE!

If your still unsure you can watch videos on bbc.co.uk/torchwood or visit youtube.

The ending in which i wont spoil is just so brilliant and non-expectant!

And i dont stop there the score (music) is fast-paced and emotional, if the music wasnt in the show then it wouldnt be as good!

Not for ages under 15 in my opinion as there is some gore and the end is very unsuitable for kids... unless they enjoy having nightmares of being given to aliens!

No bad words to say about it, and hope people enjoy watching it as much as i did and still do!

The children stop and chant 'we are coming' thats when everything begins. Torchwood are flung into the deep end when jack is blown to bits from the inside out and gwen and ianto are left on the run trying to save the world thats trying to kill them... why? and will they survive to save the world from the mysterious 456?

  • Firefly - The Complete Series [2003]
    Joe 15 Jul 2009

The 'Firefly' was without a doubt grounded too soon. There's been an underlying hum on the web about this show for the last seven years, and I came to the conclusion that any show cancelled before the end of the first season couldn't be any good or worth the time... surely? Well, this absolutely is! The show crosses the border (quite originally) between the futuristic Sci-fi genre and good ol' Western genre and what's more, pulls it off brilliantly. You follow the adventures of a crew aboard 'Serenity' - a spaceship captained by Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion). He and his crew take flight into many adventures whilst avoiding the potential cliché's of the genres. I enjoyed it immensely despite generally not being a huge fan of neither Science Fiction nor westerns. Though there are only fourteen episodes its amazing how it communicates in such detail the nine central characters and what they are about. It is hard not to become attached as the viewer to such 3-Dimensional and 'real' characters. This is not a common trait of Science Fiction (starwars springs to mind) and is a testament to how unique and special this show really was. The bittersweet series is not short of anything that you might look to find in any first-class TV show: action, adventure, humour, relatable characters, relationships etc. The only thing that could perhaps be deemed missing is a proper finale. Joss Whedon (creator, writer, director) could most certainly have been onto a winner with a concept with such broad scope. Its premature cancellation therefore baffles me as it has many. There is a light at the end of the space shuttle however: this developed a cult fan-base that helped revive the show, bringing it onto the big-screen for the still critically appraised movie 'Serenity.' So don't take it from me how good it is, this bizarre event speaks volumes. As for 'Serenity' itself, it's great in terms of introducing the plot (for firefly newbie's) and has no real continuity issues (for those already aboard). The movie brings closure after Firefly ended in such upturn mid-season. On the positive side, Firefly never had the time to turn stale and get boring as has been the downfall of other great shows. This is pure, ingenious entertainment!

  • Lee Evans - Big - Live at the O2

  • Gran Torino [2008]
    Stuart Donaldson 10 Jul 2009

This film is an understated masterpiece, don't be fooled by the trailer,it is far deeper and socially concious than that.
The premise is refreshing and interesting, the quality of dialogue and support players is very good.
For a Director/Actor to opt for a story like this so late in such a distinguished career he has picked the right screenplay.
Far from Gung Ho it is a genuine honest film and a fitting tribute to Clint Eastwood's genius.
    Brilliant.

    Social drama.

  • CSI Miami: Series 1, Part 1
    John Flaherty 10 Jul 2009

There is no doubt that the original CSI is one of the best shows on television and therefore when I found out that they had sanctioned the go-ahead for a spin off in Miami, well I was excited to say the least. And then........I watched the first episode of CSI Miami. I started to watch the show all excited and curious as to how the writers were going to create a whole new atmosphere and build new relationships and characters. Quite honestly they didn't! David Caruso, who plays the senior CSI and main character, seems to be one of the most self absorbed actors in modern times, and seems to be so without any real credentials. Prior to CSI Miami Caruso is probably best known for his role as John Kelly, the first partner of Andy Sipowicz (Denis Franz) in the first season of NYPD Blue. The fact that Caruso seems to pause and then slowly removes his sunglasses after EVERYTIME he is asked a question has just become infuriating for me to watch. I think the personality of Gilbert Grissom is what makes CSI Las Vegas so entertaining. For example all the drama seems to come from the whole cast at different times throughout each season in CSI Las Vegas and therefore this seems to keep the original series as watchable as you don't know who will be the main topic of each episode. This is where CSI Miami fails. Horatio Cain (David Caruso) comes across so arrogant that I just don't care about him and I therefore don't care what happens to him.
Another reason that CSI Miami fails is how unrealistic the characters are. It is not just how amazingly pretty they all seem to be or how they all seem to be around the same age. Instead it seems to be that keeping the crime scene free from contamination is not a top priority in CSI Miami. Whereas in the original CSI its Dr Al Robbins (Robert David Hall) who carries out the autopsy and studies the body before the body can be moved and is all dressed in the appropriate clothing. In CSI Miami its Dr Alexx Woods (Khandi Alexander), when she turns up she never wears any protective clothing, she is caked in make-up, her hair is everywhere and she is always running her hands through it while standing over the body!!! It is small things like this that ruin the whole show in my eyes and with the annoying Horatio Cain all I can say is avoid CSI Miami at all costs. Instead try other crime shows like Law & Order (original only), Criminal Minds and The Wire.

  • Spaced - Definitive Collectors' Edition
    John Flaherty 10 Jul 2009

When Spaced first aired in 1999 on Channel 4 it was safe to say it was unique and gathered up quite a cult following. Whereas in the past cult comedy shows have been stretched out well beyond their lifespan (e.g. Red Dwarf), the creators of Spaced have seemed to have learnt from other legendary comedy shows like Faulty Towers, The Young Ones and Father Ted. That lesson is that longevity is not found in how long the show can carry on for, but for how fresh the writers can keep the story lines and knowing how long the originality can be kept interesting. Therefore the originality of Spaced and the quality of comedic writing has helped the show earn its cult status and can therefore be remembered for influencing other Channel 4 productions like Black Books and Green Wing.

Although the real reason that Spaced has become such a hit is probably due to the sense of humour that the show is based. If you are a self-confessed geek and love your Star Wars, Star Trek and other great Sci-Fi treats, as well as comics, then the humour will be right up your alley. It was no fluke that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz (both directed by co-creator of Spaced Edgar Wright and written by Edgar Wright and Spaced star Simon Pegg) became worldwide successful films. If you like comedy shows like Black Books, The League of Gentlemen, Futurama and Family Guy, then you'll definitely love Spaced. I would say that all fans of modern British comedy will refer to Spaced as being one of, if not, the best British comedy for over 15 years. Spaced fans have been holding their breath for news of a third series and if recent reports are correct, it won't be long until they get their wish. The fact that you can pick up the complete collection of Spaced for less than £10 gives you know excuse to give it a go!

Spaced follows the adventures of Daisy Steiner (Jessica Stevenson) and Tim Bisley (Simon Pegg), two graduates who are finding it difficult to settle down in life. Tim (Pegg) has just been dumped by his girlfriend after she has an affair with one of his annoying friends Duane (Peter Serafinowicz) and Daisy (Stevenson) leaves what looks like a dwelling for squatters in the opening scene.

So the both unwanted Daisy and Tim decide to pose as a couple to find a satisfactory place to live.
They eventually find a quirky house that contains three flats and is owned by the strange landlady Marsha (Julia Deakin), who lives in the flat above and below lives the socially challenged artist Brian (Mark Heap).

Now they have found stability at home they begin their adventurous lifestyles that involve Tim's best friend Mike (Nick Frost) who is a army and weaponry fanatic and Daisy's best friend Twist (Katy Carmichael)who spends most of her time putting Daisy down.

  • Indiana Jones: The Complete Collection
    Marc 09 Jul 2009

Up until 2008 this was undoubtably the greatest series of movies ever!, Kingdom of The Crystal Skull damaged that reputation a little for me (but a little more on that later).
We first meet Indiana Jones in one of the most incredible opening sequences of all time as he's chased by that giant boulder trying to retrieve the small golden statue from the temple at the beginning of Raiders of The Lost Ark, the film that reshaped the Adventure genre. Indy's first outing takes him from dig sites in Egypt to submarines in the Atlantic Ocean...and by the way, he HATES snakes!
Temple of Doom is the weakest of the first 3 movies for me, alot more dark and sinister, but still filled with some great action sequences from start to finish. Indiana Jones is always over the top...but you still cant help but think "is that possible...?" even as he jumps from a pilotless airoplane with his 2 companions Willie Scott and Short Round while sitting in an inflatable dingy the films still manage this. The bridge scene towards the end of Temple of Doom is fantastic as our adventurer tries to return three sacred stones to their rightful owner.
The Last Crusade...for me one of the greatest movies ever made, this is pure 100% action/adventure. Henry Jones Snr's coming along this time in the form of Sean Connery (who may actually just overshadow Harrison Ford at times), Henry will make you laugh, he'll make you cry in what has to be the funniest of the series caue the two characters play off each other superbly. Indy must race to Venice to try and find his kidnapped father, but he's been taken to Germany by yes...the Nazi's! So off Indy goes on another sprawling adventure across the globe
The Crystal Skull...after the Last Crusade this was always going to be a hard job...but it seems they made it harder from theirselves by stepping away from the traditional Indiana Jones for me...he's not searching for any historical artifacts as before...he's searching for a big fat alien skull with hypnotic powers(yes it is pathetic), even the return of Karen Allen who played Indys other half in Raiders of The Lost Ark couldn't save this from being doomed. Too much use of special effects as cars fall from cliffs onto seemingly rubber trees to safety, bikers swing from trees with dozens of monkeys like tarzan....this just didn't feel like part of the series to me, after waiting 19 years for it I was hugely dissapointed!....anyhow this is still a fantastic series if you happen to "lose" the 4th part, well worth buying.

Raiders of The Lost Ark - Meet Henry "Indiana" Jones Jnr. in his first outing as he attempts to stop the Nazi's finding the Ark of the Covenant

Temple of Doom - He's back! This time in India, as he travels to an underground temple to retrieve three sacred stones for a small village

The Last Crusade - Indy's bringing his dad along with him this time to prevent the Nazi's using The Holy Grail to make an unstoppable army

Kingdom of The Crystal Skull - "It's not the years its the mileage", Indy may be knocking on here as he's forced by a young stranger called Mutt to help find The Crystal Skull from Latin America
