An early example of Hong Kong horror, THE ENCHANTING GHOST was released in 1970 to critical acclaim and established a future trend for the city's supernatural-themed Oriental fright flicks. Baked in the trademark Shaw Brothers atmospherics, this story of a young scholar who becomes resident in a haunted house, whilst also struggling to instigate a new romance, features some spooky set pieces, a potent aura of lovelorn macabre and a growing sense of ghoulish whimsy. Predating the classic Japanese creeper HOUSE (1977), but featuring some thematic similarities, this ghostly terror tale is a vital addition to any collection of classic Asian cinema - and a vital piece of the Shaw Brothers puzzle which 88 Films is proud to present in spine-tingling HD!!!

  • Tom Clancy's Netforce [1999]Tom Clancy's Netforce | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Essentially a cautionary tale of slightly futuristic cyber-terrorism, Netforce carries Tom Clancy's heavyweight name as the executive producer (but not writer). Don't expect a drama on the level of Patriot Games, however: Netforce is a blunt and somewhat rushed thriller with little time for character or relationship development. What it does offer is a scenario for the prospect of organised crime uniting with computer geeks and malevolent industrialists to sabotage national security through attacks on the Internet. Scott Bakula plays the FBI agent in charge of the Netforce division of the bureau; he takes charge after his mentor (Kris Kristofferson) is murdered and the investigation points to the involvement of a Web pioneer (Judge Reinhold). The hero's romance with a colleague (Joanna Going) grows a little trickier after he promotes her to the number two spot behind himself, but with the president's chief of staff (Brian Dennehy) breathing down their necks, that's the least of their professional problems. The action bounces around from good guys to sundry bad guys, but there's no question that a creeping paranoia about Net vulnerability and its disastrous implications grows on this production--and the viewers. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Halloween II [1981]Halloween II | DVD | (04/10/2004) from £5.89   |  Saving you £0.10 (1.70%)   |  RRP £5.99

You can't kill the boogeyman", explained John Carpenter in the original Halloween, and to prove it Michael Myers returns in the handsome but grisly sequel Halloween 2. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode but spends most of her time cowering in a hospital gown, and Donald Pleasance runs around like a maniac as the panicky doctor desperate to hunt down Myers before he kills again. Carpenter writes and produces with partner Debra Hill and together they replace the mystery and uncertainty of the original with an exponentially bigger body count, some strange tales about the Druids and Pagan ceremonies, and the now-familiar family ties between Michael and Laurie. First-time director Rick Rosenthal (Bad Boys) paces the film at a brisk jog and directs it with a clean, crisp style, taking the murders out of the dark to display them in all their nasty detail. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
