  • S Club 7 - CarnivalS Club 7 - Carnival | DVD | (28/10/2002) from £16.89   |  Saving you £-1.90 (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

With an accompanying "access all areas" television series, S Club's Carnival 2002 tour was billed as a defining moment of live music to match Lollapalooza. From the opening sequence of seven warrior drummers marching from the auditorium on to the stage, to the walkway that hovers precariously over the heads of the audience, the show clearly has enormous aspirations. Assisted by stunning stage projections, colourful dance routines and costumes, the seven singers successfully manage to conjure up what the title promises: a flaming hot fiesta. Apart from the inclusion of selected tracks from their third album Sunshine, the show differs little from their previous nationwide tour, with favourites such as "S Club Party", "Bring It All Back" and "Reach" all getting priority billing in the show. In a belated acknowledgement to all the mums and dads in the audience, Jon performs a powered-up rendition of Beatles classic "The Long and Winding Road", and the show ends with a pumping medley of 1970s and 80s party hits. The Carnival show may not go down in the history books as one of the defining moments of 21st century popular culture, but it's certainly a spectacular which deserves to be remembered (well, in the short-term at least). On the DVD: Carnival on disc has glossy and colourful visuals, just like the photos in the teen magazines S Club regularly front. The material is occasionally spoilt by cheap-looking visual effects, which would not look out of place on a 1980s edition of Top of the Pops. The 5.1 Stereo soundtrack, though, is excellent and successfully recreates the dynamism of the concert. The bonus features are an improvement on previous S Club DVD releases but not particularly original (an episode from the tour TV series Don't Stop Movin' and a lacklustre picture gallery). --John Galilee

  • Cinematic Orchestra: Man With A Movie CameraCinematic Orchestra: Man With A Movie Camera | DVD | (26/05/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

In 1929, Russian filmmaker Dziga Vertov made the groundbreaking Man With a Movie Camera documentary--a visual essay on life between the two world wars. Touching on poverty, sport and employment in Russia in the 1920s, Man With a Movie Camera was a masterpiece of silent filmmaking. There have been numerous soundtracks over the years that have attempted to provide Vertov's stunning images with the musical accompaniment they deserve, Michael Nyman minimalist take or Biosphere's electronica reading to name two. The Cinematic Orchestra have been using footage from the film for their live visuals and wrote a piece of the same name for their last album Every Day. They debuted their full soundtrack on the opening night of the Barbican's Only Connect season, augmenting their line up with a string section. The Cinematic Orchestra, as their name would suggest, can work detail and development into their compositions that reflect the mood of the film. The addition of a string section compliments the bands music, moving away from the jazz funk of their live sets towards something more powerful. Often fusion between the music and images work so well, you forget that the film remained without this soundtrack for 70-odd years. On the DVD: The Cinematic Orchestra extras include two live tracks, two videos ("All that you give" and "Man with a movie camera") plus a documentary entitled "From Reel To Reel". --Robert Smoughton

  • Neil Young And Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps [1978]Neil Young And Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps | DVD | (07/10/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Rust Never Sleeps its aphoristic title drawn from an intended advertising slogan was an album of new songs some of them recorded on Neil Young's 1978 concert tour. His strongest collection since Tonight's The Night its obvious antecedent was Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home and as Dylan did Young divided his record into acoustic and electric sides while filling his songs with wildly imaginative imagery. The leadoff track My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) (repeated in an electric version at album's end as Hey. Hey. My My (Into the Black) with slightly altered lyrics) is the most concise and knowing description of the entertainment industry ever written; it was followed by Thrasher which describes Young's parallel artistic quest in an extended metaphor that also reflected the album's overall theme -- the inevitability of deterioration and the challenge of overcoming it. Young then spent the rest of the album demonstrating that his chief weapons against rusting were his imagination and his daring creating an archetypal album that encapsulated his many styles on a single disc with great songs -- in particualr the remarkable Powderfinger - unlike any he had written before. Now for the first time ever Sanctuary Records is proud to release the legendary concert movie Rust Never Sleep on DVD. Recorded at San Francisco's Cow Palace in October 1978 the movie documents one of the most remarkable concert performances ever put on film. Tracks: 1. Sugar Mountain 2. I am a Child 3. Comes a Time 4. After the Goldrush 5. Thrasher 6. My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) 7. When You Dance I Can Really Love 8. The Loner 9. Welfare Mothers 10. The Needle and the Damage Done 11. Lotta Love 12. Sedan Delivery 13. Powderfinger 14. Cortez the Killer 15. Cinnamon Girl 16. Like a Hurricane 17. Hey Hey My My (Into the Black) 18. Tonight's the Night

  • Norah Jones - Live In New Orleans [2003]Norah Jones - Live In New Orleans | DVD | (17/03/2003) from £8.20   |  Saving you £5.79 (70.61%)   |  RRP £13.99

Norah Jones Live in New Orleans provides further reasons why many are claiming that she is the new Nina Simone. In the space of a few months her critically acclaimed debut album Come Away with Me sold millions of copies worldwide, spurred on by her phenomenal success at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards and word-of-mouth recommendations. Recorded in August 2002 at the House of Blues in New Orleans, the concert provides an intimate, if somewhat brief showcase of a performer on the verge of the big time. Accompanied by "Her Very Handsome Band" Norah swiftly performs the favourites from the album ("Don't Know Why" and "Lonestar") as well as other material such as "Something is Calling You" and "Bessie Smith". While many may associate Jones's music with either leisurely moments slumbering in coffee lounges, or as the soundtrack to suburban dinner parties, as the catcalls and screams between songs suggest, her music (and sex appeal) is stimulating the middle classes in previously unimaginable ways. As she moves into stadium concert performer league, perhaps this DVD will be the only opportunity for many to witness the "queen of easy-listening" in a truly intimate and live setting. On The DVD: Norah Jones Live in New Orleans includes a rich Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack, which successfully reproduces Jones's stunning vocals. While the picture quality is glossy and colourful, the visual material is limited due to the handful of cameras recording the show. Also included is the promo for the track "Come Away with Me". --John Galilee
