Live in Concert is a feature-length (98 minutes) release edited from two concerts given by the jazz superstar line-up of Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland and Pat Metheny at the Mellon Jazz festival, Academy of Music, Philadelphia on June 23, 1990. This was part of an outstanding world tour following up drummer DeJohnette's Parallel Realities album, though this programme and the original album only have two cuts in common, "Indigo Dreamscapes" and "Nine Over Reggae". Hancock (piano and keyboards) and Metheny (guitar) were both on Parallel Realities but here contribute material from their own back catalogue: Hancock a barnstorming 15-minute "Hurricane" and the closing "Cantaloupe Island", Metheny offering the appropriately nocturnal and reflective "The Bat". Bassist Dave Holland, who was the guest on the tour, introduces the sequence with the longest cut, "Shadow Dance". Here are four of the world's finest modern jazz artists at the top of their game; virtuoso playing certainly, but also impeccable taste and artistry, seamless interaction and inspired music-making. When combined with a transparent, gimmick-free visual style, which simply shows the musicians playing, concentrating on whoever is soloing to offer the best seat in the house, the result is an uplifting, exhilarating example of how well jazz can be presented on DVD. On the DVD: there are no special features other than a trailer for two classical DVDs, and as such the disc starts playing automatically, allowing it to be used like a particularly long live album without even turning the TV on. Unusually for 1990 the concert was shot at 16:9 and is presented anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs, though nothing can disguise the relative softness of live video shot under concert lighting, nor the occasional after-images left by the lighting. The stereo sound is absolutely first-rate, and that's what really counts.--Gary S. Dalkin

Kiss bassist/chief provocateur/world-class swagmeister Gene Simmons once infamously claimed that his cartoon shock-rockers were more influential than Dylan, though the driving sentiment behind Kiss Symphony, a chronicle of the band's liaison with the Melbourne Symphony, seems to paraphrase "Love Minus Zero": "There's no success like excess / and excess is the best success of all" The history of the fusion of rock bands and orchestras is a long and notoriously spotted one, though matters of decorum have seldom concerned--or deterred--Kiss. Disc One of this two-DVD set outlines the genesis of the project, with an earnest and typically irony-free Simmons meeting with perpetually bemused conductor David Campbell to discuss mutual musical quandaries, such as synchronising explosions and whether the orchestra can get their Kiss make-up on with due haste. Rehearsal and preparation footage display an unusually affable orchestra and band, a mood that carries over into its pyrotechnic-punctuated greatest-hits set with the band (Paul Thayer ably filling the platforms of the departed Ace Frehley). It all works surprisingly well, if at some pitched, Vegas-showroom-in-hell level of bombast. It's a technically impressive show and package, if one that feels distinctly padded as a double-disc (the performance of the "Symphony"'s Act III is repeated on both discs). Less is more? Not here. --Jerry McCulley

Encompassing many of the standard themes of pop concerts Blue's One Love Live Tour is an epic, if somewhat disjointed show. From the Deep Impact-style meteor storm at the beginning and the end, to the interlude video depicting the guys as wayward pop stars disobeying their paternal manager, all the traditional theatrical strands of contemporary teen tours feature here. Recorded at the Sheffield Arena during the autumn of 2002, the show, like their music, attempts to be too many things for too many people. This being their first stadium tour, all eyes are on whether the boys can stand the rigours of performing live. They pass the test remarkably well, but their performance is weakened by the inclusion of some dodgy album material. The concert comes alive when the fillers and the thematic segments are dumped, and the four perform their biggest hits such as "All Rise" and "Too Close", as well as their covers of other people's songs. The 1970s funk medley midway through the show is excellent, though a little unoriginal. Beamed on to a massive screen behind the four, the recorded duet with Sir Elton for "Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word" works particularly well. On the DVD: One Love Live Tour opens with an innocuous 15-minute overview of preparations for the tour. The audio-visual quality of the concert material is good, and the feature performance of "All Rise" can be viewed from five different camera angles. Whilst there are generous dollops of bonus material included with this package, most of these extras are pretty insubstantial. Disc 2 does however include the videos for the first three single releases from the One Love album, as well as an Easter egg bonus of the promo for "U Make Me Wanna" (other more conspicuously hidden extras are also included). --John Galilee
Dusty Springfield is without peer in pop music history - the UK's greatest female singer; with a voice that has never been equalled or bettered in British pop music. It is indefinable except in terms of what it does. When Dusty Springfield sings a song it is an instant conduit to joy to pain to laughter or to tears...it becomes a mirror in our hearts and minds in which we see all the times we've felt just like her. The tracklist features 'Wishin' And Hopin'' 'Losing You' 'I
