Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons have travelled a long way from their humble beginnings on the street corners of Newark to centre stage as the most successful doo-wop group in rock and roll history. Built on a foundation of superb song writing from Bob Gaudio and arrangements and production that drew on everything from Phil Spector's 'Wall of Sound' to the danceable beats of Motown's pop and R&B singles The Four Seasons' unique sound was capped by the forceful falsetto and three-octave range of lead vocalist Valli. The group made their chart debut in 1956 but they had to wait another six years before they managed to top the charts with Sherry a song which earned them a recording contract with a major label and catapulted them into rock and roll superstardom. Over the next few years the Four Seasons followed Sherry with such unforgettable original songs as Big Girls Don't Cry Walk Like a Man Candy Girl and Rag Doll all of which became rock and roll classics. Still going strong Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons have become an institution whose illustrious history spans several musical eras from the barbershop harmonies of the '50s to the disco beat of the '70s and beyond. In 1990 the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame joining such legends as the Rolling Stones the Beatles and Eric Clapton. Tracks included are: Working My Way Back To You Dawn Who Loves You I've Got You Under My Skin Beggin' My Eyes Adored You Silver Star December '63 Swearing To God Acapella Sequence - Remember When Sunday Kind Of Love Blue Moon Grease Silence is Golden Opus 17 Fallen Angel Can't Take My Eyes Off You Sherry Walk Like A Man Big Girls Don't Cry Bye Bye Baby Let's Hang On
Leading a renaissance of earnestness is the Scottish band Travis, whose December 20, 2003 concert at London's Alexandra Palace finds the young band onstage and on fire before a polite yet enthusiastic crowd of 8,000. It's a huge hall, almost too big for the band's intimate, introspective music. But Travis pulls off a high-energy show built around its 2003 12 Memories album, lighting songwriter Fran Healy's pure-pop cadences with terse arrangements and bursts of overdriven sound. The band plays tight and clean, commendably resisting the tendency among bands to get noisy when they want to sound powerful. If only director Matt Askem better understood this concept. The cameras are always moving, giving us almost no stationary vantage. Still, the picture looks great, with terrific use of black and supersaturated hues emphasizing primary colors. Travis at the Palaceis an exciting record of a band in its prime. A 22-minute documentary, "Inside Travis at the Palace," is heavy on irreverence and light on insight. Concert sound quality is exemplary in all formats (Dolby Digital 5.1/2.0, DTS 5.1): clear and punchy, uncluttered, and appropriately ambient in a venue stretching 384 feet front to back. Instruments and voices sound utterly natural, and the drums are quite forward in the mix, a welcome throwback to 1970s production values. --Michael Mikesell
