  Baby Shambles was founded by Pete Doherty after his departure from The Libertines in 2004. This early concert from September that year was filmed at the Ritz in Manchester and features tracks that would appear on their debut album ""Down With Albion"" released a couple of months later in November along with singles Libertines tracks and otherwise unreleased songs. Scottish singer/songwriter Dot Allison formerly of One Dove appears as guest vocalist on a number of tracks.

  This outstanding DVD presents a complete and previously unissued live 1974 performance by two jazz giants: Oscar Peterson and Count Basie. Oscar Peterson plays a couple of pieces alone and then presents some amazing duets with Danish bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen. Basie plays a wonderful set with his big band which at that time included such celebrated soloists as Jimmy Forrest Al Grey and Curtis Fuller plus singer Big Joe Turner who makes a special guest appearance. But the true climax of this concert recorded at the Prague Jazz Festival on November 8 1974 comes when Peterson calls Basie to the stand and both enjoy themselves having a friendly conversation with two pianos.   This video companion to the Canadian singer-songwriter's triumphant live album confirms in sight what that recording advanced in sound--Sarah McLachlan and her fine, flexible stage band have evolved into a superb live performing unit, breathing added fire and nuance into McLachlan songs that were already stunning in their original studio versions. Always a strong, charismatic singer, McLachlan now conjures a rare balance of delicacy and power, measured here in performances of signature songs that add a new, more muscular edge matching her band's rock firepower. Thus, "Possession" expands beyond its already sensual promise to touch on truly erotic abandon, while "Building a Mystery" focuses its portrait of a narcissistic poseur with a harder edge and a newly amended, adult lyric that's entirely appropriate. Shot on McLachlan's 1998 headlining tour, the concert captures her in a more theatrical and frankly glamorous (if slightly funky) vein than her fabled Lilith Fair shows: in her floor-length blue gown, sparkling blue mascara, and bare feet, she evokes a more demure, Gen-X cousin to Cabaret's Sally Bowles. On the DVD: With 23 featured songs, Mirrorball on video adds nine tracks not heard on the CD. The audio mixing is generally excellent, providing some hall ambience but retaining a front-array, proscenium placement to instruments. Shot on film, rather than videotape, the concert preserves the stunning, subtle lighting effects of McLachlan's touring production, albeit at slight visual sacrifice in lower-light segments in which the resolution is grainier. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

The Jerome Kern-Ira Gershwin songs are middling, except for the lovely "Long Ago and Far Away". One number presents a parade of magazine cover girls come to life (great snapshot of an era).   In the early 1960's the Goodyear Tire Company commissioned five short jazz films. It was part promotional device, part good will gesture. In both regards, it was successful. The programs were originally filmed on 35 mm negative. The sound was recorded in professional stereo. However, the shows were presented in 16mm with a mono track. Over the years, the prints faded because of an unstable colour print stock. What was once an extremely professional, good looking endeavour, now looked like an out of date historic relic. Storyville Films has returned to the original source material for this DVD presentation. The original 35mm source has been transferred to video tape and the original stereo masters have been restored. Now you will see the gorgeous detail and hear the excellent sound that was captured in the early sixties. These films now stand as some of the most technically advanced jazz films, featuring some irreplaceable music.
