Sepultura are a phenomenon - For over twenty years the band from Brazil has been delivering a brutal mix of metal hardcore thrash punk and tribal that could hardly be any more intense or more passionate. What had begun in Belo Horizonte in 1984 soon turned into a metal hurricane of threatening proportions and has taken on undreamt of dimensions since the enlistment of American vocalist Derek Green in 1998. Disc 1: Live In Sao Paulo April 3rd 2005 Tracklist: 1
If nothing else, Doggystyle indicates a remarkable, if not exactly commendable, honesty in the relationship between Snoop Dogg and his fans. Snoop recognises that his absurdly wealthy, sexually indulged, permanently stoned persona is admired chiefly by priapic 14-year-old boys who don't understand why girls won't speak to them, and young men who think a booming car stereo is a signifier of awesome masculinity. He has delivered to these constituencies precisely the kind of video they would want. Doggystyle does not trouble itself with any actual promotional clips or artist interviews. Though Snoop occasionally deigns to wander in front of the camera and mime half-heartedly along to one of his songs, this is essentially a porn film, which is appropriate given that most of what Snoop has recorded in the last few years resembles uncannily the glutinous muzak that usually serves as a soundtrack for such things. It is not without amusement value, wholly inadvertent though this is--the editing of this "Soft" version of Doggystyle, intended to make it saleable in shops which are not patronised exclusively by men in overcoats, occasionally lends the joyless copulations of Snoop's mates a certain comedic appeal. --Andrew Mueller
Banned in London busted in Milwaukee the legendary Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics the band of changing musicians built around her caused a seismic cultural shock still felt today. They pioneered the mohawk the fusing of punk and metal and did shows including the blowing up of cars yet to be matched. Labeled 'the greatest punk band in the world' by Tom Snyder on his 1981 TV show by 1982 their next album was hailed by the LA Times as the best heavy metal since AC/DC.
Ricky Martin's bravura, swivel-hipped performance of "The Cup of Life" at the 41st annual Grammy Awards handily stole the spotlight from the evening's platinum-edged superstars, and positioned him as poster boy for a Latin-pop crossover boom that dominated media for months to follow. Like most "overnight" sensations (or, for that matter, "brand new" pop trends), Martin's impact was actually the payoff for an extended apprenticeship: anything but a novice, this Puerto Rican native was already a major star in the Spanish-speaking pop realm, having graduated from his early stint as a plump-cheeked member of Menudo to become a sleek heartthrob. With his chiselled features, flashing smile and sinuous physical presence, Martin can't be blamed for playing to his female fans, and these video clips do just that. The sequence for Martin's breakout English hit, "Livin' La Vida Loca" (also included in a Spanish version) offers a template of sorts: footage of Martin performing the song in a night-club setting is interspersed with location shots of the singer and the siren he's singing about, stitched together with rapid cuts and swirling camera movement that echo the percolating rhythms. Elsewhere, on "She's All I Ever Had", Martin downshifts to the role of earnest balladeer. The objects of his affection are typically drop-dead gorgeous (and, in one instance, teasingly undraped), and the undercurrent of sex approximates the sort of glossy perfection you would expect from lingerie or perfume ads.The cover-boy route is probably inevitable for Martin, but his vitality is hard to dismiss, especially during the final song--the same live Grammy performance that put him on global pop radar. That joyous appearance confirms that Martin doesn't need supermodel co-stars or retakes to heat things up. --Sam Sutherland
