Christina Aguilera's My Reflection is a mirror that shows where the teen-pop diva's going (toward grown-up diva-dom as an R&B star) and where she's been (showcasing her navel on a dance-infused tour). Aguilera's first concert video shows that what this "girl" really wants is to move beyond the bouncy R&B-flavoured pop she's known for. Her cheeky hits ("Genie in a Bottle", "Come On Over Baby", "What a Girl Wants") are followed by songs from Mi Reflejo, her Spanish-language album and My Kind of Christmas, her holiday release. She has sweet duets with R&B legend Dr John on "Merry Christmas, Baby" and balladeer Brian McKnight on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", as well as sharing the stage with rapper Lil' Bow Wow (weird, but it works) on "So Emotional" and "Christmas Time". (Quick behind-the-scenes interviews from MTV's Diary punctuate the concert.) Despite her inability to resist over-the-top vocal histrionics, Aguilera's range is impressive, whether she's performing a spirated rendition of Free's 1970 hit "All Right Now" or belting out Etta James's 1961 classic "At Last" after giving the blues singer a heartfelt tribute. --Valerie J Nelson, Amazon.com
Jean-Philippe Rameau was still a young musician when he moved to Lyon where he probably composed his few surviving motets including the Grand Motet In Convertendo here performed by Les Arts Florissants under William Christie which anticipates Rameau's orchestration in his later operatic works. This wonderful fugue on Psalm 126 (verse 6) Euntes ibant et flebant (They went forth and wept) bears comparison with similar works by his contemporary J.S. Bach. In addition to a full performance of In Convertendo this DVD presents some of Rameau's key chamber music pieces and an insightful music documentary The Real Rameau which sheds light on the life of a composer who thought only of music dreaming of a universal harmony and regarding music as an example to all arts and indeed to all the sciences as well. Pictured by his contemporaries as a gaunt and taciturn man ill-suited to courtly surroundings his work was described by Berlioz as 'one of the most sublime conceptions of dramatic music'.
Edwin Starr was an integral part of the soul Motown and dance floor scene from the mid 50's until his untimely death in 2003. With a string of major UK hits to his name Edwin Starr remained a hero on England's Northern Soul circuit where his energy and dedication to delivering a quality performance was greatly appreciated. Here for the first time on DVD Wienerworld are proud to present The Edwin Starr Story narrated by Edwin himself together with valued contributions from Lillian Kyle (Edwin's Manager) Angelo Starr (his brother and leader of the band) and Ian Levine (top Northern Soul DJ and songwriter). This rockumentary weaves the tale of Edwin Starr's life through music and words and demonstrates why he was affectionately renowned to be 'the nicest man in show business'. Tracklist: 01. One of the most exciting bands of the '60s British Invasion The Who took the American music scene by storm. While Roger Daltry Pete Townshend and Keith Moon stole the spotlight with their on-stage antics John Entwistle affectionately known as the Ox quietly stood in the shadows supplying some of the most kick-ass bass lines in rock and roll. An Ox's Tale takes a rare look at this passionate and talented musician. The film chronicles Entwistle's entire life from his first public performance at the age of 14 through his turbulent days with The Who and then The John Entwistle Band to his final big dream of a Who reunion tragically cut short when John passed away in his Las Vegas hotel room on the eve of the first show. An Ox's Tale which includes the last footage and interviews ever shot with John is a chance for fans to discover the real man behind the bass the powerful force that was the Quiet One.
My Favourite Broadway--The Love Songs, the follow-up to 1998's My Favourite Broadway--The Leading Ladies, allows the gentlemen in, but that's not always an advantage. Sure, Michael Crawford developed a great following as the Phantom and Nathan Lane is a comedian nonpareil, but Tom Wopat, Brent Spiner, Peter Gallagher, Adam Pascal, and Ron Raines, while all fine performers with good career histories, simply can't match the marquee power of the original's Liza Minnelli, Audra McDonald, Jennifer Holliday, Nell Carter, and many others. And even when old-timers appear, Robert Goulet seems closer to Las Vegas than Lancelot, and Barry Manilow (mostly making his name as a composer these days) looks pretty awkward. That said, this is still an enjoyable live show from New York's City Centre. Among the ladies returning, Rebecca Luker and Marin Mazzie shine in songs from the revivals they star in, and super diva Linda Eder raises the roof with a three-song medley. And there are other additions to the roster, one legend, Chita Rivera (reprising her "English Teacher" from Bye Bye Birdie), and one up-and-comer, Heather Headley (sharing her "Elaborate Lives" duet with Aida co-star Pascal). But the first 100 minutes is all prologue, anyway. The real star is the host, Julie Andrews, who also hosted the original show and conspicuously did not sing in it, following her infamous, lawsuit-laden vocal-chord surgery that effectively ended her music career. Throughout the evening she teases the audience, reciting lyrics and making references to My Fair Lady. So when Crawford begins the finale "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" and Andrews enters, the audience holds its breath: Will she or won't she? It's an electric moment, and perfect theatre. --David Horiuchi, Amazon.com
