Compiled from McCartney's two concert tours of North America in 2002, Back in the U.S. is chiefly a "selective" biographical film of Macca on tour. Unlike the CD of the same name, which is made up of full-length versions of the songs performed on the tour, the DVD features only excerpts. Presenting the legend and those around it in a somewhat superficial light, the film is as much a tribute to the Heather-reinvigorated McCartney as to his music. There's plenty of footage of the new Mrs McCartney accompanying Paul on his marathon of television and radio interviews; band and crew members pipe on about how much of an honour it is to work with McCartney; and fans' of all ages gush hysterically about how amazing it is to see the star perform live. After sitting through three hours of such material, you can't help wishing that something would go wrong. The set-list includes Beatles favourites, tunes by Wings and selected numbers from McCartney's solo back catalogue. Realising the audience's obvious taste for nostalgia, the film mixes shots of the wild contemporary audience with footage of tearful, screaming fans from 40 years earlier. While the songs and audience reactions remain the same, the most touching moment of the film is when Macca performs his tributes to Lennon ("Here Today") and Harrison ("Something"). On The DVD: Back in the U.S. appears to break all DVD capacity records. As well as the main feature, there's plenty of extra behind-the-scenes material and bonus songs. While the picture quality is satisfactory, the three audio soundtracks (including DTS Surround) more than compensate for any visual shortcomings. Playing the disc on a DVD-ROM drive allows access to a secret Back In The U.S. Web site--one of the most comprehensive bonus Web sites ever. Highlights include additional soundcheck clips, outtakes, music promos and extended performances from the show. --John Galilee
One Giant Leap have created a unique music TV and film project. Featuring an incredibly diverse collection of collaborators from Noam Chomsky to Will Young Maxi Jazz to Tim Robbins Billy Connolly to Michael Stipe. What About Me? is the culmination of 4 years work by Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto. Following the success of their first double Grammy nominated film & album they visited 50 global locations collecting wisdom and musical jewels. Then they lovingly pieced them together into the TV & Film mosaic that is What About Me?. It's an inspiring and alarming look at our collective insanity: how we are ego-driven needy in relationships insatiable in desire addicted to status wounded by childhood and unable to stop thinking but how we still manage to be inspired and creative... The backbone of the project is the music that One Giant Leap make. They start with pre-composed backing tracks in a laptop studio. The music grows as each layer is added seamlessly mixing international stars like Alanis Morissette KD Lang and Michael Franti with Bedouin Musicians Chinese rappers Gabonese Pygmies Tuvan throat singers Egyptian folk muscians Japanese taiko drummers and also the royalty of today's world music scene including Baaba Maal Lila Downs Rokia Traore Oumou Sangare Zap Mama all expanding on the same One Giant Leap musical vision. While Duncan & Jamie sought out wisdom from the likes of Noam Chomsky Eckhart Tolle & Stephen Fry and the cream of the worlds thinkers writers and entertainers they also met many people just getting on with their lives - gravediggers taxi drivers brain surgeon's street kids... Unscripted with no storyboard these conversations all reveal how we are connected not only through our creativity and our beliefs but most of all through our madness! When Duncan & Jamie left on their global journey they thought they were in control but how could they predict what would happen... This set contains the full two hour movie the TV series and extras.

Comprising singles, videos and live recordings spanning their five-year career, The Complete Jam 1977-1982 is comprehensive and absolutely essential viewing for any Jam fan. As well as containing all their greatest hits, from "All Around the World" to the austerely funky "Town Called Malice", its an exhilarating and occasionally bizarre retrospective of a bygone pop age. The earliest live material, recorded for the 1977 punk programme So It Goes, is the most exciting; stark and grainy, conveying the sheer tearaway thrill and a sense of the impact the band had, coming on like the Grange Hill bullies hi-jacking the school bands equipment. They are more well behaved on Marc, the show fronted by the former T Rex star who announces them like hes announcing his own musical death warrant. Theres also amusing footage of the band on a Swedish pop show, with Weller grumpily refusing to answer questions from the hostess like "Are Jam punk?" Some of the videos accompanying the singles reflect the naive self-consciousness of the early video age, some of the bands sartorial choices might make them wince now, and some of Wellers earliest lyrics dont bear up well to scrutiny. But this remains testimony to the imperishable greatness of a band who remained successfully aloof to some of the sillier vagaries of their day. On the DVD: The Complete Jam includes a "multi-angle scrapbook", a brief profile of the "Jam fan phenomenon" in which Weller-lovers mumble their appreciation over cups of tea, as well as a profile of the bands history, which is cobbled together from material already available elsewhere on the DVD. Some of the earlier footage remains unpolished but in the Jams case thats a benefit rather than a drawback. --David Stubbs

In 1981 Jean Michel Jarre was invited by the Chinese government to become the first western musician to perform in the Peoples Republic of China. Performing 5 concerts in Beijing and Shanghai the tour encountered numerous problems including arriving at an arena to find only one power socket and having to buy back concert tickets from stone-faced VIPs and redistribute them free to the Chinese public. October 2004 and Jarre returns to Beijing with 70 tonnes of equipment to open Chinas "Year of France" cultural exchange with an outdoor concert. Choosing a picturesque location at Wumen Gate in the Forbidden City, Jarre performed with both modern and traditional Chinese Orchestras, choir, opera singers, and several guest musicians including Chen Lin, and guitarist Patrick Rondat. Jarre was prevented from performing with Chinas Cui Jian whose songs were sung by student demonstrators in 1989. Filmed in high definition and presented in 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound (both at the concert and on DVD) the complete concert is presented. It looks and sounds fantastic, in no small part due to the THX mastering, a first for a music DVD. Jarre makes extensive use of new photographic projections on giant 3D inflatable screens, the laser harp, Theremin, and midi flute. The music is varied but would have benefited from band musicians on stage as the music sounds all too similar to the recent "Aero" album apart from some Chinese instrumentation. Jarre looks lonely on stage and recounts a similar track listing from the last 8 years. Highlights include "Voyage to Beijing" as well as the essential "Souvenir of China" and a highly orchestrated "Rendez Vous 2." Straight after the concert in the Forbidden City, Jarre travels by motorbike through the audience to Tiananmen Sqaure where he played a small number of songs to the expectant Chinese crowd. A great idea to play a second concert, but a missed opportunity to play some better tracks like "Eldorado" or "Chronologie 4." Instead of remaking Edith Piafs "La Foule" in Chinese, a better choice might have an adaptation of Jarres own "Cest La Vie." The package includes a photo gallery and commentary from the composer. The making-of documentary is the icing on the cake, showing how hands-on Jarre is with all aspects of production, from trimming some trees to the lighting design. The included live CD album doesnt add anything for those who have already bought the Aero album. Jarres work deserves to be on the DVD format and this is a highly presented premiere from a special event. --Colin Neal
