This 18-song set from Nat 'King' Cole is a visual tribute to one of the most elegant trail blazers in history. Born on St. Patrick's Day 1919 Nathaniel Adams Coles took to the piano at an early age and formed his own group while in his teens. His smooth sensuous vocals bridged American's changing tastes from pre-World-War II to a post-war world in a hurry. Nat King Cole became the first African-American to host a national tv show in 1955 setting standards for all who followed. He remains a musical treasure more than half a century after his death. In 1972, Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul, recorded an album of gospel music at The New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, before an ecstatic live audience. The result, Amazing GraceĀ, went on to become one of the biggest albums of Aretha Franklin's career and one of her most beloved works. But even as the album gained fans around the world, few realised that the inspirational sessions had not only been recorded, they had been filmed by a camera crew led by Oscar winning filmmaker Sydney Pollack. However, due to technical problems, the film has never been seen. Until now. Music lovers won't want to miss this thrilling film, which is both an extraordinary look at a key moment in American musical and social history, and an invaluable record of one of America's greatest artists doing what she did best. When you experience The Work of Director Spike Jonze, you enter a world where anything can happen and frequently does. From the innovative director of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation., this superior compilation of music videos, documentaries, interviews and early rarities offers abundant proof that Jonze is the real deal--a filmmaker ablaze with fresh ideas and fresh ways of filming them. While collectors will regret that only 16 of Jonze's 40 plus music videos are included here, this glorious sampling represents the cream of Jonze's bumper crop; for sheer ingenuity it doesn't get any better than this. From the Beastie Boys' popular TV cop-spoof "Sabotage" to the intensely disciplined backwards-filming technique of the Pharcyde's "Drop", it's clear that Jonze has an affinity for inventive street theatre, culminating in the sad/happy vibe of Fatlip's introspective "What's Up Fatlip?" and the pop-jazz effervescence of Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet". Technical wizardry is also a Jonze trademark, especially in the elaborate "Happy Days" nostalgia of Weezer's "Buddy Holly" and the graceful fly-wire dancing of Christopher Walken to Fatboy Slim's pulsing "Weapon of Choice". No doubt about it: every one of these videos is an award-worthy testament to Jonze's ability to combine hard work with fun-loving spontaneity. On the DVD: The Work of Director Spike Jonze is a double-sided DVD (one in a series that includes the equally dazzling work of Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham) accompanied by an informative 52-page booklet. The second side explores Jonze's artistic evolution with an entertaining selection of video rarities and three half-hour documentaries, the best being a revealing and very funny interview with rapper Fatlip after his dismissal from the Pharcyde. Commentaries for the music videos are consistently worthwhile, supporting Jonze's own belief that his best videos were made for artists whose work he genuinely enjoyed. Lucky for us, his pleasure is infectious. --Jeff Shannon

For Steps fans, Christmas 2001 will be remembered as the bleak time when the fab five announced that they were splitting. The End of the Road is the recording of their final performance at Manchester's MEN Arena. Deceptively more polished and cohesive than their previous performances, the show does retain some of the traditions of previous Steps tours. More of a holiday-camp spectacular than a traditional live concert, the majority of the tracks appear to be pre-recorded, with only the slower tracks being performed with "live" vocals. As expected, all of their biggest hits are staged but a disproportionate amount of album and new compositions are also included. These impromptu moments were undoubtedly added to provide convenient costume change breaks, with the five each taking turns to perform tracks individually. First off is H who swoops over the audience on a trapeze at the start of his rendition of Cher's "Believe". To anyone other than a star-struck 10-year-old, H's stage behaviour comes across as a tad annoying not to say patronising. He also manages to ruin most of the up-tempo tracks by encouraging the audience to shout "ooh, ooh". In retrospect, the show is fascinating to watch for other reasons, particularly as band member Claire looks close to tears throughout, ominously hinting at her insider knowledge of the impending split. On the DVD: Steps: The End of the Road features the following candid warning: "Our apologies for the slight drop out in the programme. This was unavoidable but it does not mean your copy is faulty!". Luckily the glitch in "Love's Got a Hold on My Heart" only lasts a couple of seconds, resulting in a brief loss of sound, with the visual and audio recording immediately returning to standard. Appealing to fans of dance computer games, the lightweight extras are focused around mastering 30-second dance routines of some of Steps' greatest hits. --John Galilee

If Phil Collins isn't the hardest-working man in show business, he's right up there, at least if the nearly 90-minute concert Live and Loose in Paris is any indication. The man is non-stop motion, whether seated behind his drum kit, prowling the stage as frontman (the format is in-the-round, so it takes an effort to keep all of the arena-sized audience involved), or, of course, singing the hits (including "Against All Odds", "In the Air Tonight" and "Sussudio"). The "loose" part of the title is a bit of a misnomer; Collins' excellent band is unerringly tight, and the performance is well-choreographed while still maintaining some sense of spontaneity. There's no denying the appeal of Collins' drum-heavy, horn-driven, R&B-cum-world-music sound, and if his music ultimately isn't as challenging or engaging as that of Peter Gabriel's (the other ex-Genesis lead singer), no one in this Paris audience seems to mind a bit. Good show, Phil. --Sam Graham

This sensational DVD sees Benny Goodman and his band performing some of the all time favourites in what was to prove his final concert at the Tivoli Gardens in Sweden.Although from a poverty stricken family Benny Goodman had music in his life from an early age and by 1921 when only 12 years old he appeared on stage imitating bandleader and clarinettist Ted Lewis catching the eye of Ben Pollack in the process who invited him to join his band. From that chance meeting the scene was set for the beginning of a career that helped to change the course of modern day music. When the home of music de-camped to New York Goodman followed and turned freelance playing with such luminaries as Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. But in 1934 he formed his own band featuring Bunny Berigan on trumpet Jess Stacey on piano and Gene Krupa on drums; add to that lineup the talents of arranger Fletcher Henderson and the birth of 'swing' had arrived.A fabulous reminder of the 'swing' revolution.Performance listing:1. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis but that didn't dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums.
