  • Genesis - In London [1980]Genesis - In London | DVD | (19/05/2008) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £10.99

Professionally shot archive footage from the ABCAB album tour filmed at the Lyceaum Ballroom London May 1980! ""Dinosaurs"" is a term that seems to fit Genesis like no other band. Jointly with ""Yes"" Genesis have been the most influential band for generations of progressive rock bands. 1974 saw the release of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway an epic prog rock monument tuned to perfection. Not all was peaches and cream however when singer Peter Gabriel left the band after the supporting tour. After a long futile search for a new vocalist the remaining band members decided to let drummer Phil Collins take over the microphone - another stroke of genius. Whether it was mainly for Collins or not the band steadily drifted away from theatrical prog rock towards mainstream pop music. Perfect evidence is this 1980 concert at the Lyceum Ballroom in London which coincided with the work on their monster-selling studio album Abacab. Recorded Live At Lyceum Ballroom London May 6th 1980. Tracklist: 1. Deep In The Motherlodge 2. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight 3. Carpet Crawl 4. Squonk 5. One For The Vine 6. Behind The Lines 7. • Laura Pausini - Live 2001/2002 World TourLaura Pausini - Live 2001/2002 World Tour | DVD | (18/03/2014) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £11.99

A gold-plated treat for fans of the Italian chanteuse, Laura Pausini Live is the record of concerts at the Filaforum, Milan filmed during her 2001-2002 World Tour. A capacity crowd shows their appreciation in the most flattering way, by singing along lustily with Laura as she presents a "best of" selection of emotive power ballads and chorus-led up-tempo numbers. It's touching to see the singer's unaffected delight when, during "Seamisai" for example, she lets the audience take the lead. It's this genuine sense of pleasure that Pausini communicates so effectively on stage, and which works its charm on the viewer at home as much as the crowd in the auditorium. Framed by her slick band on an elegant stage set, her understated appearance seems a continent or more away from the overly demonstrative American divas with whom she is often compared. True, many of these songs could equally be in the repertoire of Celine Dion or Cher or Mariah Carey, but Pausini is the real deal: a fine singer who simply takes delight in her music, without the need for histrionics or the apparently obligatory celebrity excesses. For the studio versions of many of these songs, check out her Best of CD. On the DVD: Laura Pausini Live reproduces the genuine stadium sound in DTS or Dolby 5.1; accompanied by a vivid anamorphic 16:9 picture the sense of occasion is palpable. Extra features include selected Spanish-language tracks; the promo videos for "E ritorno da te" and "La storia che vale" (plus their Spanish versions); a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of the videos; a clips montage; and some time-lapse photography of the venue. --Mark Walker

  • Incubus - Volume 2Incubus - Volume 2 | DVD | (15/12/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £7.99

Having set out to make a version of rock music that’s a step apart from the norm, it’s perhaps no surprise that Incubus Volume 2 should be such a groundbreaking release. Clocking in at two-and-a-half hours, the package is spectacular value for money. The combination of live, video and documentary footage may not be new, but the presentation is remarkably original. Filmed over a period of two years, this captures a band in development, honing their unique mix of metal, hip-hop and more cultural influences. The live material is intense, the videos visionary and the interviews proof that Brandon Boyd and co are a cut above your average brainless rock outfit--as indeed is this release. On the DVD: for once here’s a release that utilises the true potential of the DVD format. It’s a truly interactive experience, inviting the viewer to explore the material on offer, as opposed to just pressing play and sitting back. This means it’s possible to return to the disc over and over again without stumbling across the same sections twice. An Incubus slot machine throws up random sections and it’s easy to become lost in the music as you move from acoustic tracks to a comedy performance on US TV. A massive song index ties the whole thing together and the result is a music DVD that sets a new standard for others to follow. --Phil Udell

  • Classic Albums - Phil Collins - Face Value [1999]Classic Albums - Phil Collins - Face Value | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

After achieving stardom by taking over the lead vocals of Genesis from Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins released his first solo album, Face Value, in 1980. This explores the album's making in a one-hour documentary film, with Collins himself providing the bulk of the insightful commentary. From his home studio, he discusses how the lyrics to "In the Air Tonight" wrote themselves after his painful divorce and why a drummer would never use a drum machine. Also interviewed are engineer Hugh Padgham, producer Ahmet Ertegun, Genesis colleagues Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, and many of the studio musicians. Songs such as "Behind the Lines", "I Missed Again", "The Roof Is Leaking", "This Must Be Love" and, of course, "In the Air Tonight" are excerpted in both home and concert footage (some of it previously unreleased), and Collins accompanies himself at the piano in a wrenching "Please Don't Ask", which was cut from the album. In the two decades between the original album's appearance and this 1999 video production, Phil Collins has gone on to become an international solo star, but many still consider Face Value his finest album. This excellent documentary shows you why. --David Horiuchi
