Live at the Royal Albert Hall is a trip down memory lane both for fans of Englebert Humperdinck and light-entertainment shows. In true Variety style, toothy dancing girls and an orchestra made up of Tom Selleck lookalikes complement the King of Romance. Covers of early-80s hits such as the Pointer Sister's "I'm So Excited", along with "Hello" and "I Just Called to Say I Love You" get priority over Englebert's own songs. Humperdinck favourites like "Quando, Quando, Quando", "Mona Lisa" and "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize" are instead performed in greatest hits medleys. While the velvety voiced medallion man may be a first-rate performer, this release is compromised by poor sound and visual quality. Recorded in 1985 the songs may have stood the test of time but unfortunately the footage and the sound material doesn't stand up to the rigours of the digital age. On The DVD: Disadvantaged by the poor quality of the recording, the extras fail to add any value to the DVD. The standard Englebert Humperdinck "life story" press release is replicated in the biography option, which is near impossible to read on screen due to the use of tiny font and the text falling out of the frame. The discography is similarly poor and is made up of the track listing of a selection of his albums, and is by no means comprehensive. The concert tracks however can be accessed individually from the main menu.--John Galilee

The ITV Sessions – Ian Gillan: Live in concert DVD, is one of the first titles released from the ITV Sessions, a multi-part music concert series, featuring some of the biggest names in the UK music scene from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. The ITV Sessions feature rare and previously unavailable music concerts, long laying dormant in ITV’s archives and include live performances and studio sessions by international hit-makers such as Status Quo, Belinda Carlisle, Pulp, Motorhead, Wishbone Ash, Spandau Ballet and many more. Best known as the lead singer and lyricist for Deep Purple, rock music vocalist and songwriter Ian Gillan is widely recognised as one of the most influential and significant musicians of all time. As one of the foremost vocalists of the heavy metal style of rock that emerged in the 1970s, he began singing in bands while still in his teens, the most notable of which were the Javelins (1962-1964) and Episode Six (1965-1969). Another member of the latter band was bass player Roger Glove, and the two were invited to join Deep Purple in 1969, debuting with the band at the Speakeasy club in London on July 10. During his career Gillan also fronted his own band, had a year-long stint as the vocalist for Black Sabbath, and sang the role of Jesus in the original recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.
