Chucho Valdes - Latin Jazz Founders [Spanish Import]
Busta Rhymes has on of the most instantly recognisable styles in the world of rap with his halting ragga-inspired delivery. Originally a founder member of Leaders Of The New School he went solo in the mid-nineties and hit the big time with his massive hit single 'Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check' in 1996. Since then he has had a string of hit singles and albums on both sides of the Atlantic which have managed to be both critically acclaimed and highly successful commercially. This show recorded in Autumn 2003 features many of his best known tracks including 'Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check' 'Fire' 'Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See' 'Fire It Up' 'Gimme Some More' and 'Ante Up'. This is Busta Rhymes' first ever live DVD and captures him at the height of his game. Formed in 1965 in San Francisco with bluegrass - country enthusiast Jerome 'Jerry' Garcia on guitar 'Pigpen' McKernan on keys Bob Weir also on guitar Phil Lesh on Bass and Bill Kreutzmann on drums the musicians performed for a while as the Warlocks which were basically a folk and bluegrass outfit. However acid rock and psychedelia popular at the time - especially in San Francisco - helped the band merge a more modern sound with its affinity for rootsier music and drugs played a hand in making their music that much more intoxicating. During December 1965 Garcia renamed the band The Grateful Dead from a song about a pauper's funeral. Jerry Garcia the granddaddy of all deadheads died in 1995 of heart failure while in drug rehab thus ending an impressive reign.
This DVD features a rare live 1965 London concert of the Bill Evans Trio. The concert was recorded as a single performance to be broadcast as two shows in the BBC Jazz On 625 television series presented by Humphrey Lyttelton. The repertoire is a mixture of Evans originals American songbook titles and modern material including the Newley-Bricusse Who Can I Turn To? and Miles Davis' beautiful Nardis - a tune he himself curiously never recorded. Evans has still barely recovered from the tragic death of bassist Scott LaFaro in 1961 and had waited a year to form a new trio with Chuck Israels on bass and Paul Motian on drums who by this time had been replaced by Larry Bunker. Ray Campi formed his first band - Ramblin' Ray and The Ramblers way back in 1949 and although his repertoire includes a substantial dose of Country and Western Swing it is among Rockabilly enthusiasts that Ray has gained his legendary status. Not only did he cut records which are now regarded as Rockabilly classics in the genre's 1950s heyday he was partly responsible for sparking the 1970s/80s Rockabilly Revival via his released on Ronny Weiser's infamous Rollin' Rock Records. The most prolific artist on Rollin' Rock was Ray Campi and The Rollin' Rock Tour on 1977 was a phenominal success in Europe and headliners Campi and Mac Curtis became cult figures. This glorious show presented here is from a UK tour that Ray made back in the late 1980s... Music though the most transitory of art forms often has the power to create a palpable sense of time and space. Film is especially suited to being enhanced and deepened by music. When the two meet the results can be banal uneven or brilliant - but they're best when they're surprising. Such is the case with Sabbia a collaboration between musician Brant Bjork and filmmaker Kate McCabe. The vastness of the deserts their sweep and scope and giant emptiness waiting to be filled with raw sound has always been prominent in Bjork's music and it finds suitable expression in McCabe's airy unethered visualization of those parts of California where 'wasted' describes the landscape instead of the people. Conjuring in bits and pieces everything from Van Sant's Gerry to Wilfred Thesiger's Arabian Sands Bjork & McCabe's Sabbia crowds with the empty desert with sights and sounds that seem not so much natural as inevitable.
