Another member of the latter band was bass player Roger Glove, and the two were invited to join Deep Purple in 1969, debuting with the band at the Speakeasy club in London on July 10. During his career Gillan also fronted his own band, had a year-long stint as the vocalist for Black Sabbath, and sang the role of Jesus in the original recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.
