Luther Vandross was an incredibly gifted artist who was either responsible for or involved with some of the biggest hits of the 70s 80s and 90s. Not only was he a gifted tenor with an elastic range but an incredible songwriter also who raised the bar in terms of lyric composition and quality production that settled a pure pop sensibility into an R&B groove. Starting off as a backing singer in the 70s he worked with an amazing range of artists career including David Bowie and Chi

Berlin's industrial metal sextet Rammstein was already provocative when the band nabbed unwanted U.S. press attention as favorites of the two young sociopaths behind 1999's tragic high school shootings in Columbine, Colorado. This concert video, expertly produced during a huge outdoor concert the previous summer, won't dissipate the tension between Rammstein's fans and social critics looking to find the links between such violence and the band's intense, sweeping music, especially on this uncensored edit of their nearly 100-minute set. Sonically, the band lashes the clangorous legacy of industrial countrymen like Einsturzende Neubaten to the simpler, head-banging power chords of metallurgists like the Scorpions, Rammstein's front line of rasping, squealing guitars laced with synthesizer and pummeled by splashy drum work. The music's focal point is vocalist Till Lindemann, who half-sings, half-bellows in a guttural bass that makes most metal men sound like countertenors, an effect underscored by Lindemann's beefy, muscular physique as he stalks the stage. His macho growl and restless movement contrast with the largely motionless postures of his bandmates, which include a vampiric guitarist, a rail-thin keyboardist, and an even more spectral, bald bassist whose black-taped skull nods to S&M couture. A massive stage set that's one part Borg, one part Blade Runner, onstage pyrotechnics, and piercing klieg lights that sweep the vast crowd pointedly synthesize Third Reich with apocalypse as rapturous fans sing along with "Du Hast" ("You Hate") or "Heirate Mich" ("Worship Me"). When the mesmerizing sturm und drang finally pauses, it's due to a graphic, simulated homosexual rape (on "Bueck Dich") that earns this tape its advisory, and will repulse all but the most ardent fans. --Sam Sutherland
Prog-rock's dominant power trio Rush get a worthy showcase in Chronicles, a DVD compilation that repeats the 1990 VHS release with minor variations and some pleasant surprises. It's aptly titled, as the videos follow Rush's 30-year evolution in fashion, performance and visual representation. Loyalists may wish for a lengthier selection, but with remastered Dolby 2-channel stereo, this 63-minute disc clearly improves upon the VHS release. The in-studio performance of "Tom Sawyer" is new (previous versions were from the Exit, Stage Left concert video), and although hidden bonus videos of "The Enemy Within" and "Afterimage" are inaccurately listed as "previously unreleased" (they appeared on the 1985 compilation Through the Camera Eye), their inclusion here is welcome (and accessible by selecting the "Rush Chronicles" logo on the DVD's "Play Videos" menu). Aimee Mann makes a playful appearance on "Time Stand Still". This is recommended to Rush purists only, but on those terms, it's essential viewing. --Jeff Shannon
Reunions by middle-aged rock groups are usually as desirable as unannounced visits by ex-lovers whose former appeal, is now lost. However, as Live at the Apollo demonstrates, the 21st century return of Roxy Music was a much more pleasant surprise, for two reasons. First, Roxy Music did not commit the grotesque self-indulgence, common on occasions such as this, of subjecting their audiences to any new material: the set captured here, at London's Apollo Theatre in October 2001, is hit after hit, delivered with a palpable enthusiasm. Second, and most importantly, even 30 years after their foundation, and 25 years past their creative peak, Roxy Music's songs still sound like they're being phoned back from the future. On the DVD: Live at the Apollo is presented in 16:9 picture ratio with three sound options: Dolby Digital 5.0 Surround, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo, and DTS 5.0 Surround. Subtitles are available in English. There is also a 15-minute documentary containing interviews and some rehearsal footage. --Andrew Mueller
