Purists may scoff at The Doors of the 21st Century, but for those who believe in second chances, this concert succeeds as both reunion and revival of one of the greatest rock bands in history. Replacing the late, great Jim Morrison is a daunting task, but the addition of British vocalist Ian Astbury (who bears more than passing resemblance to Morrison) is a risk that pays off surprisingly well during this 102-minute gig, superbly recorded in Houston, Texas, during the band's 2003 world tour. Astbury respects Morrison's legacy, but wisely avoids slavish re-creation of "the Lizard King"'s inimitable style; he's paying affectionate tribute while channeling his own vocal energy into Morrison's poetry. In performing the entirety of the Doors' classic L.A. Woman along with other timeless hits, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger (drummer John Densmore moved on to a variety of solo projects; he's replaced here by Ty Dennis) make good on a 32-year-old promise to give Doors fans the tour that Morrison's death pre-empted, adding what the Doors never officially had: a bass player (Angelo Barbera) to re-create the LP's rhythm section. The band's in excellent form here, so let the naysayers whine; this DVD proves that new Doors are better than no Doors at all. --Jeff Shannon
They were described as hip cool the Fabulous Five and in the mid 1960s no one could touch them. This entertaining programme follows the careers of Frank Sinatra and his Rat Pack as they rose from relative obscurity made a name for themselves seperately and then formed a dynamic fivesome on stage and screen. Several hit movies later they were a phenomenon showcasing their talents to adoring fans. Famous for their boisterous off-the-cuff stage routines at the height of their

Continuously switching guises between progressive social commentators and mainstream AOR songsters, the Manic Street Preachers have always had a love-hate relationship with both music critics and the record-buying public. Forever Delayed visually highlights this dichotomy, as well as exposing their contradictory stance towards capitalism. Dependent on the free market to disseminate their material to the masses but at the same time deeply aware of the inequalities it causes, the group has continuously tried to achieve a balance between the political and popular. The videos express these paradoxes, with production usually falling into one of two categories: the in-yer-face political promos ("Little Baby Nothing", "So Why So Dad?"), and the everyday ("Found That Soul", "Ocean Spray"). Sadly, despite their riotous intentions, the videos made up of live concert material ("Life Becoming a Landslide", "The Masses Against the Classes") sit in the latter category, primarily because of their predictability. Matching the style and typeface of their release artwork, one of the group's long-standing favourite video techniques for their more politically inclined releases has been the incorporation of critical slogans and quotes. From "You Love Us" to 1999's "Tsunami", sublime and usually incomprehensible messages are flashed on the screen. Whether these are radical anti-capitalist messages or pretentious stylistic techniques to sell more records is unclear. It seems the jury remains out on the real motivations behind both these videos and the band itself. On the DVD: Forever Delayed features all 30 of the band's videos, from "Motown Junk" (1990) to "There by the Grace of God" (2002), plus 14 bonus remixes, a discography and photo gallery. All of the audio material is presented in either Dolby stereo or the more wholesome 5.1 surround format. Even the remix tracks have accompanying visual material, usually made up of clips from the original video, rare footage, and photographs of the band. The menus follow the design and typeface of the album artwork, making them stylish but at times difficult to read. The icons and on-screen track listing are also complicated to access. --John Galilee
Elaine Stritch is without question one of the grand dames of Broadway. Now aged 77 her career has spanned 50 years on stage screen and TV. This highly acclaimed one woman show has been a huge critical success in New York (both Broadway and the Public Theater) and in London. In a series of vignettes punctuated by songs from the shows in which she has starred she tells stories ranging from the hilarious to the deeply moving from her turbulent life and career. The stories inclu
They may be every parent's nightmare, but the rap all-stars that comprise the 2000 Up in Smoke tour (smoke, as in blunts and chronic--or marijuana, for the uninitiated) are incredibly popular with a surprising cross-section of young music lovers today. This two-hour-plus DVD captures most of one concert by the four rappers who joined together for this tour: Ice Cube, Eminem, Dr Dre, and Snoop Dogg. If you aren't a fan of the music, don't expect this to change your mind, or even to help you understand these rappers' appeal. For the devoted, however, you get heaping doses of four of the hottest acts working, in a show that includes lavish production values, as well as plenty of backstage footage and photographs as extra features. Given the slice-and-dice editing (no shot, it seems, is allowed to last more than two seconds), it's hard to get a fix on them or a true picture of what the show looked like if you happened to be sitting in the audience. --Marshall Fine
This Greatest Video Hits compilation collects a dozen tracks from the Yes discography along with their accompanying promo videos. Hardly comprehensive, the selection does at least chart a fascinating period in the band's history, from the classic line-up of 1977's Going for the One album and their biggest hit of the decade, "Wonderous Stories", to their mid-80s transatlantic incarnation with tracks from 90125 (the ubiquitous "Owner of a Lonely Heart") and The Big Generator. Yes were never an especially photogenic bunch, and on the evidence of these videos not comfortable in front of the camera unless simply standing playing their instruments--quite rightly the music was always the most important thing with this group. Most striking here are not the rather unimaginative visuals but the various fashion disasters: their collaboration with Buggles Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn on the Drama album yielded some fantastic music--"Tempus Fugit" and "Into the Lens" are here--but the same cannot be said for the band's appearance. Later performances with Trevor Rabin uncomfortably attempt to transform the group from a bunch of gawky musos into slick US-style rockers. Oddly, perhaps the most satisfying video is the period costume piece for "Madrigal" (from Tormato), featuring Rick Wakeman seated at his harpsichord in full 18th-century regalia. Short introductions to each song are provided by band members, filmed during their 1991 Union tour. On the DVD: Yes Greatest Video Hits is disappointingly presented in NTSC format, with bog-standard 4:3 picture. Sound is basic stereo. There are no extra features. --Mark Walker

2008 sees Jethro Tull celebrate their 40th Anniversary a landmark achievement for any rock band but even more so when you consider that Tull have been constantly active throughout that period with tours and studio albums and are one of the most globally successful British acts of all time. This new DVD release brings together Jethro Tull live performances filmed in Germany over a period of time. The main concert comes from 1982 with further material from 1986. As an added bonus we have two tracks each from 1993 and 1970/71. The release is fully approved by Ian Anderson and the packaging features photographs from his personal archive.
Yes, it's a plank-spanker's dream. In October 1996, three legendary guitarists--Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai--toured as G3, a kind of super-roadshow featuring their own bands and, as in the last section of this recording, finally coming together onstage for a few numbers. One of the reasons why the whole package works so well is that Satriani's dirtyish techno-blues style, Johnson's limpid near-jazziness and Vai's pyrotechnics manage to seem poles apart yet entirely compatible at the same time, both as individual elements and as a frontline trio (although Johnson inevitably gets sidelined occasionally during the latter set). There are plenty of good tunes, although Johnson's "Manhattan", in which he switches from plectrum lead to gentle thumb-strums seemingly in mid-bar is outstanding, as is the trio's tour-de-force rendering of Frank Zappa's "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama", Vai of course being a Zappa band veteran. On the DVD: Extra features are thin on the ground. There's a set of scrolling biographies (which don't understand the remote's "scan" command, so they go--by--very--slowly) but nothing else to speak of. In the end the playing is the thing on any outing like this, so just enjoy it. --Roger Thomas
