Miles Davis: Live In Montreal 1985
Some would say that Starsailor are Chorley's biggest contribution to modern culture since the opening of the nearby Charnock Richard M6 motorway services in the 1960s. Like the aforementioned favourite resting point for Blackpool day-trippers Love Is Here (Live), will become a solid, long-stay favourite for fans. Recorded in November 2001, one month after the release of their debut album and while they were still being lauded as "the next big thing", the main feature is a live run through of the album. New composition "Some of Us" and the B-side "From a Whisper to a Scream" are also performed, along with versions of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Elton John's "Rocket Man". The concert footage and the audio (Dolby 5.1) are of a high quality, and breakthrough tracks "Poor Misguided Fool" and "Alcoholic" sound stunning. The show is hampered, though, by the limited material the guys can draw upon, and Walsh's repetitive melancholic delivery of existing songs. What does become apparent is that after a couple more albums and a little more musical experimentation Starsailor are on course to be live giants. On the DVD: Love is Here includes a good Channel 4 documentary on the band. Three other documentaries are also incorporated (a tour featurette, the making of "Love is Here", as well as a short film on the recording of "Born Again"). The promo videos for Starsailor's first four singles ("Good Souls", "Alcoholic", "Lullaby" and "Poor Misguided Fool"), and acoustic versions of two tracks are also on the disc. Despite the varied mix, these extras only last a few minutes and vary in quality. However they can all be accessed easily via the stylish menus. --John Galilee

Eddie ""Lockjaw"" Davis had a distinctive and instantly recognisable 'tough' style of playing the saxophone which earned him his equally distinctive nickname. Long associated with Count Basie he also had a distinguished solo career. This performance from 1977 sees him teamed with a dream line up featuring Oscar Peterson on piano Ray Brown on bass and Jimmie Smith on drums who combine brilliantly to deliver an outstanding concert. The Beatles appeared four times on CBS' The Ed Sullivan Show in the US, and this two-disc set presents all four shows in their entirety. While one is tempted to skip through this collection to watch only the Fab Four's 20 performances, there is historic value in seeing Sullivan's complete programmes. With America reeling from the murder of a popular president, JFK, less than three months prior, the Beatles' Sullivan debut on February 9, 1964, ushered a renewing joy into the country's living rooms. The band kept it up another two weeks, sharing Sullivan's variety-show bills with the likes of impressionist Frank Gorshin, comedians Allen & Rossi, future Monkee Davy Jones (in a scene from Oliver!) and sundry unrepentant vaudevillians, magicians and acrobats. Various problems with microphones and bad direction (one barely sees John Lennon during the first show) couldn't stop the magic, and by the time the band made a return trip in September 1965 to perform "Ticket to Ride", "Yesterday" and "Help" among others, the group's brilliance and wit outsized their television surroundings. --Tom Keogh

Playing all 31 tracks on The Old Grey Whistle Test Volume 3 will make some viewers believe the producers are now beginning to scrape the bottom of the barrel; others will think that finally they're getting around to the good stuff. Given that the series somehow managed to take an enormous range of music on board while at the same time seeming entirely consistent (surely the secret of its success), there's evidence for both points of view. The case for the prosecution might cite Janis Ian (her melancholic self-obsession now seems indulgent to the point of prissiness), Al Stewart ("Year of the Cat" is simply a dreary song) or Orange Juice (did they ever really mean anything much to anyone?). The case for the defence, however, is pretty strong overall, with highlights such as Bowie doing "Oh You Pretty Things", Johnny Winter covering "Jumping Jack Flash" as if he was its rightful owner, and Kings BB and Freddie bringing it all back home with two excellent performances. There's something for everyone along the way. Proggers get Discipline-era King Crimson, which saw Adrian Belew saving the band from disappearing up its own fundament; folkies get an unplugged Fairport Convention; punks get John Cooper Clarke and the Jam; somebody or other gets the Bangles. However, if there's one track that justifies the existence of this disc all by itself, it has to be "In a Hole" from the Jesus and Mary Chain, whose glorious nihilism made the Pistols seem like a folk group. On the DVD: The Old Grey Whistle Test Volume 3 DVD is presented in old-telly 4:3 ratio and offers numerous extras, including contributor profiles and links, a commentary and an artists' gallery. --Roger Thomas
