MEET AFRICA'S ANIMAL BABIES - STARS OF THIS WILDLIFE SERIESEpisode: Table MannersAll babies are born small and have a relatively short time in which to grow and reach a size where they can look after themselves. This growth is accompanied by developmental changes which are equally vital to their survival so it is not surprising that from the first moments of life the main occupation of all baby animals is feeding. And it is from these initial table manners whether and instinctive suckle being fed from a parents beak or taught the finer points of killing ones prey that survival for these wild babies depends and their ongoing ability to find food and fend for themselves.Episode: Basic InstinctsBecause most babies' basic needs are met by the mother from food to protection and shelter the babies have time to develop those skills needed for their survival. This learning process can either take place through interaction with others trial and error or basic instinct. These essential skills cannot always be practically taught by watching an adult and are often developed while playing and interacting with babies of the same age.Episode: Full CircleMating is the culmination of a life's work having survived from first breath through the many challenges of the wild and finally back again to the fertilization and growth of another life and so the cycle continues. 'Full Circle' looks at this ongoing evolutionary cycle all wild animals must take in order to survive as a species.Bonus Episode: Breaking Through'Breaking Through' shares these first few moments that the young and wild experience after leaving the egg and facing the first of life's many challenges. Those that hatch from eggs face the greatest odds as most egg-laying parents deposit their eggs and leave them to fate while only a few stay on hand to see their babies safely on their way.
Nasa: A History - Vol.1
A real life Touching The Void and as tense and dramatic as any densely plotted work of fiction The Conquest Of Everest features images shot by Tom Stobart and then higher up the mountain by George Lowe one of the mountaineering party who was Hillary's original climbing partner: his footage shows Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay as they head off alone in their famous push for the summit. The group's tense struggle to reach ever greater heights contrasts sharply with the breathtaking images of the surrounding mountains and Irish poet Louis MacNeice's narration. The history of the mountain that lies between Tibet and Nepal is explained - in Tibetan culture Everest is known as Chomolungma and is revered as the Mother Of The Universe while in Nepalese it is called Sagarmatha meaning Forehead Of The Sky. An outstanding example of the documentary genre this true-life account of the heroic ascent of the world's highest peak by the team led by Colonel John Hunt records the complex logistical planning behind the attempt as well as the ten failed attempts to reach the summit that had taken place in the previous thirty years. The 175 mile trek to the base of Everest and then the seemingly endless barriers of ice snow and rock are all captured in this remarkable film.
