  Just one year after his successful and highly acclaimed comeback at the Vienna State Opera he returned to the same opera stage where he made his brilliant debut in 197 as a thirty-year-old: the Gro''Ÿes Festspielhaus in Salzburg. This recital was staged a second time and was also relayed live to a giant screen at the city's Domplatz - a clear indication of the enormous affection with which he was received by the Salzburg public. The Spanish tenor repays such lively interest with an exclusive programme that includes no less than 23 songs and five encores. Whereas the first half of the evening was divided into three parts - works from the Italian baroque French m''lodies by Jules Massenet and canzoni by Francesco Paolo Tosti the second half consisted entirely of Spanish works and focused principally on the songs of Manuel de Falla. In the 1970s The Who were the hottest live act around. Their trademark destruction of guitars during and after their gigs was regarded the weirdest thing in rock until Jimi Hendrix set his guitar ablaze on stage.   If you own a DVD player and have even the slightest interest in classical music (including its modern end), opera or ballet, then you'll want the Arthaus Musik DVD Sampler. For the price of a super-budget audio CD you get over an hour of the most convincing reasons why DVD has to be the best thing to happen to the canned versions of these art forms since the invention of stereo. The chunks you get are fairly small, but there's something for everyone, including opera from Callas to Ewing, Blomstedt's Beethoven Five, the Kronos Quartet, Ek's remarkable Sleeping Beauty, Abbado conducting Mozart, Barenboim conducting Mozart, and a great deal more. The format allows you to scrutinise both the musical and visual elements of the performances in the minutest detail (allowing for the occasionally capricious camerawork), and of course the clarity of both is superb, if occasionally sonically unflattering when digital glare becomes intrusive. All in all, this is an excellent trailer for the Arthaus catalogue and a very good advertisement for the musical potential of the DVD format in general. --Roger Thomas

  When Adriana Lecouvreur makes her entrance in the first act of Francesco Cilea's opera to the strains of her characteristic sweeping melody and chides her admirers that she is only 'the humble maidservant of the creative spirit the echo of human drama her modest desire for self-effacement conceals one of the essential truths of this and many of the operas of Cilea's Italian contemporaries: their unswerving focus on one remarkable woman. Like Tosca or Madama Butterfly Adriana is the character at the very centre of the action the one who draws all the audience's sympathies. Unsurprisingly when the historical figure Adrienne Lecouvreur of the Comedie-Francaise returned to theatrical life in 1849 as the subject of a play by the dramatist Eugene Scribe and his collaborator Ernest Legouve the role became associated with such legends of the stage as Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse. And in her musical incarnation at the hands of Cilea the part has similarly been something of a vehicle for great singing actresses.

  Though Jon Vickers had a wide ranging repertory moving with stylistic ease from Monteverdi to Wagner to Britten he never took on such quintessentially Italian roles as Des Griux Cavaradossi or Manrico. Collected on this remarkable DVD however are scenes with Vickers in all three of these roles which he never performed on stage. They are taken from Radio-Canada's L'Heure du Concert a series of live TV broadcasts from Montreal studios in the 1950s. It was an exciting pioneering time for opera in Canada and a time of experimentation for Vickers. He tried on many operas during this time some of which he decided were too light for his voice - Cosi fan tutte Don Giovanni Rigoletto La Traviata. When it came to Manon Lescaut Vickers says I never thought I was a Puccini singer. He did have a yen to do Tosca but the right situation never arose. Of Il Travatore he says That really calls for a spinto-dramatic tenor which I never possessed. I felt it was not ideal for me.What we have here then is the only record of Vickers in the ardent music of Des Grieux and Cavarodossi and as Manrico in the final dramatic prison scenes. Although these roles never became a part of his repertory these performances offer a fascinating look at the beginnings of the unique dramatic and musical involvement that became the hallmark of the tenor's landmark portrayals.
