| RRP Giuliano Carnimeo's uncut 1971 thriller 'The Case Of The Bloody Iris' (a.k.a. 'What Are Those Strange Drops of Blood Doing On Jennifer's Body?') is a classy example of the Italian giallo thriller. The sensual Edwige Fenech plays a model who moves into the apartment of a slain colleague and soon fears that she's next on the killer's list. Carnimeo directing under his preferred pseudonym Anthony Ascott constructs the movie as a series of sudden murders and last-second fake-outs and he distracts the audience with half-naked models up until the climactic revelation of the killer's identity. Dig that groovy Bruno Nicolai score!

| RRP Slovakian director Juraj Jakubisko is quoted as saying that the meaning of filmmaking is having the audience experience more miracles than they could expect in real life. While watching POST COITUM one is reminded of this maxim since the film - which employs numerous optical tricks - is one long progression of sexual encounters a vulgarized and modernized variant on Arthur Schnitzler's drama of indifference: everyone changes partners like other people change underwear and still don't find anything but their own emptiness. With actor Franco Nero as a photographic artist whose relationship to his models is not strictly professional Jakubisko also satirizes his own profession.

Doctor Jekyll's Mistresses | DVD | (09/09/2002)
from £17.53
| Saving you £-7.54 (-75.50%)
| RRP Devotees of prolific Spanish schlockmeister Jesus Franco won't be too surprised that Dr Jekyll's Mistresses features neither Dr Jekyll or his mistresses; the current title is a meaningless substitute for the original The Secret of Dr Orlof. A notional sequel to Franco's breakthrough The Awful Dr Orlof, it opens with a dying scientist revealing a lack of judgment in estimating the character of a colleague ("You're ambitious, but you're a dedicated genius not an unscrupulous madman") to whom he wills his researches into turning corpses into pasty-faced killer zombies who can home in on ultrasound emitted by junky costume jewellery. Having murdered his own brother for fooling around with his wife (Luisa Sala), the genial scientist (Marcelo Jauregui) reanimates his relative (Hugo Blanco) and for some obscure reason sends the creature out to strangle tarty girls who work in a nearby nightclub. When the monster's innocent daughter (Agnes Spaak) shows up at the castle to claim her inheritance, she catches on that something is amiss ("'Ever since I came here, I've sensed something secret in this house--the life you live with Uncle Conrad is just too tragic for words"'). Technically far more competent than most Franco films, this makes eerie use of Spanish landscapes and manages an odd noir-ish cheesecake in the killer-bothered, jazz-scored nightclub scenes. Too slow actually to be good, it is undeniably weird, and the dubbed dialogue is consistently funny. On the DVD: Dr Jekyll's Mistresses on disc is an English dub of a French release cut with a surprising amount of nudity for a 1964 film as the monster ogles and strangles strippers. These scenes (one is still in French) are a little wobblier than the rest of the picture, as if spliced in from another source. Print quality is excellent, with lovely deep blacks. The packaging misspells the title as Dr Jeckyll's Mistresses. --Kim Newman

Pier Paolo Pasolini Vol.1 | DVD | (26/02/2007)

| RRP A triple feature collection from revered Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini. Accatone (1961): Pasolini's first film is a painfully realistic study of a pimp in Rome. Vittorio Accattone has never worked a day in his life and has apparently made a good living prostituting his female companion Maddalena. But her arrest begins his decline; hungry he begs from churches and even visits his estranged wife and son. When Stella a lovely and unbelievably innocent peasant worker enters his life Accattone tries to find a way honest or not to bring back good fortune... RoGoPaG (Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini Jean Luc Godard Ugo Gregoretti Roberto Rossellini 1963): RoGoPag is an anthology of four short films by a quartet of world-renowned directors. Roberto Rosselini's Illibatezza (Virginity) chronicles a beautiful Italian stewardess's efforts to dissuade a desperate American suitor despite his near-psychotic persistence. Pier Paolo Pasolini's controversial La Ricotta (Curd Cheese) takes an irony-laden look at the bizarre goings-on during a film shoot that aims to re-create the Biblical story of Jesus (starring Orson Welles as an incredibly pretentious director). Jean-Luc Godard's Il Nuevo Mondo (New World) equates the ending of a problematic love affair with a tragic nuclear holocaust. And finally Ugo Gregoretti's Il Pollo Ruspante (Range-Grown Chicken) takes a comedic - and tragic - look at the world of advertising as a young family treks into the country to contemplate buying a plot of land. With these shorts each director takes time to further explore the themes that permeate their feature-length works focusing on issues of religion jealousy and corporate influence in the early 1960s. Love Meetings (1965): Microphone in hand Pier Paolo Pasolini asks Italians to talk about sex: he asks children where babies come from young and old women if they are men's equals men and women if a woman's virginity matters how they view homosexuals how sex and honor connect if divorce should be legal and if they support closing the brothels (the Merlina Act). He periodically checks in with Alberto Moravia and Cesare Musatti. Bersani is intrusive and judgemental prodding those who answer. The film's thesis: despite the booming post-war economy Italians' attitudes toward sex are either rigidly Medieval (the poor and the South) or muddled and self-censoring (the bourgeoisie and the North).

Tinto Brass - The Key / Cheeky / All Ladies Do It (Subtitled | DVD | (24/03/2003)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP With its stars bottom looming large on the cover, erotic adventure All Ladies Do It is clearly the work of Italian director Tinto Brass. It is another tale of a young woman and her quest to fulfil her sexual desires, in this case Claudia Kolls Diane, who embarks on a series of casual affairs much to the interest of husband Paul who, assuming that her tales are merely the product of an active imagination, finds himself aroused by their content. In the meantime, Diane is increasing her circle of lovers before a trip to Venice threatens to bring her dual life crashing down. The plot is frankly secondary to Brass appreciation of the female form (absolutely no opportunity is missed to focus on Kolls behind) and it all becomes a little ludicrous. The original Italian title ("Cosi fan tutte") is derived from Mozarts comic opera but, unlike the operas convoluted sexual politics, here there is only a rather confused attempt at expressing a quasi-feminist message about female independence. All Ladies Do It is best viewed as a piece of glossy titillation and nothing more. On the DVD: Brass certainly knows how to make the best of a location and there are some exceptionally beautiful shots of Venice to be found among the carnal adventures. The extras include a filmography and photo gallery as well as a low quality but telling interview with the director, during which he expounds on a rather strange theory regarding womens bottoms and the fact that, unlike their faces, they cannot lie. --Phil Udell
