Spider-Man 3: Based on the legendary Marvel Comics series Peter Parker has finally managed to strike a balance between his devotion to M.J. and his duties as a superhero. But there is a storm brewing on the horizon. When his suit suddenly changes turning jet-black and enhancing his powers it transforms Peter as well bringing out the dark vengeful side of his personality that he is struggling to control. Under the influence of the suit Peter becomes over confident and starts to neglect the people who care about him most. Forced to choose between the seductive power of the new suit and the compassionate hero he used to be Peter must overcome his personal demons as two of the most feared villains yet Sandman and Venom gather unparalleled power and a thirst for retribution to threaten Peter and everyone he loves. Ghost Rider: Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) was only a teenaged stunt biker when he sold his soul to the devil (Peter Fonda). Years later Johnny is a world renowned daredevil by day but at night he becomes the Ghost Rider of Marvel Comics legend. The devil's bounty hunter he is charged with finding evil souls on earth and bringing them to hell. But when a twist of fate brings Johnny's long-lost love (Eva Mendes) back into his life Johnny realizes he just might have a second chance at happiness - if he can beat the devil and win back his soul. To do so he'll have to defeat Blackheart (Wes Bentley) the devil's nemesis and wayward son whose plot to take over his father's realm will bring hell on earth! Hulk: Scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) has to put it mildly anger management issues. His quiet life as a brilliant researcher working with cutting edge genetic technology conceals a nearly forgotten and painful past. His ex-girlfriend and equally brilliant fellow researcher Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly) has tired of Bruce's cordoned off emotional terrain and resigns herself to remaining an interested onlooker to his quiet life. Which is exactly where Betty finds herself during one of the early trials in Banner's groundbreaking research. A simple oversight leads to an explosive situation and Bruce makes a split-second decision; his heroic impulse saves a life and leaves him apparently unscathed-his body absorbing a normally deadly dose of gamma radiation. Acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee turns his masterful eye to adapting the classic Marvel Comics character for the big screen. Setting out to faithfully transfer the Hulk comic book character from four-color paneled page to motion picture screen Lee combines all the elements of a blockbuster visual effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films. Staying true to the early subversive spirit of the Hulk as envisioned by its creators (Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) while also tuning the tale to current dangerous times Lee presents a portrait of a man at war with himself and the worl

Slovakian director Juraj Jakubisko is quoted as saying that the meaning of filmmaking is having the audience experience more miracles than they could expect in real life. While watching POST COITUM one is reminded of this maxim since the film - which employs numerous optical tricks - is one long progression of sexual encounters a vulgarized and modernized variant on Arthur Schnitzler's drama of indifference: everyone changes partners like other people change underwear and still don't find anything but their own emptiness. With actor Franco Nero as a photographic artist whose relationship to his models is not strictly professional Jakubisko also satirizes his own profession.

  • Doctor Jekyll's MistressesDoctor Jekyll's Mistresses | DVD | (09/09/2002) from £17.53   |  Saving you £-7.54 (-75.50%)   |  RRP £9.99

Devotees of prolific Spanish schlockmeister Jesus Franco won't be too surprised that Dr Jekyll's Mistresses features neither Dr Jekyll or his mistresses; the current title is a meaningless substitute for the original The Secret of Dr Orlof. A notional sequel to Franco's breakthrough The Awful Dr Orlof, it opens with a dying scientist revealing a lack of judgment in estimating the character of a colleague ("You're ambitious, but you're a dedicated genius not an unscrupulous madman") to whom he wills his researches into turning corpses into pasty-faced killer zombies who can home in on ultrasound emitted by junky costume jewellery. Having murdered his own brother for fooling around with his wife (Luisa Sala), the genial scientist (Marcelo Jauregui) reanimates his relative (Hugo Blanco) and for some obscure reason sends the creature out to strangle tarty girls who work in a nearby nightclub. When the monster's innocent daughter (Agnes Spaak) shows up at the castle to claim her inheritance, she catches on that something is amiss ("'Ever since I came here, I've sensed something secret in this house--the life you live with Uncle Conrad is just too tragic for words"'). Technically far more competent than most Franco films, this makes eerie use of Spanish landscapes and manages an odd noir-ish cheesecake in the killer-bothered, jazz-scored nightclub scenes. Too slow actually to be good, it is undeniably weird, and the dubbed dialogue is consistently funny. On the DVD: Dr Jekyll's Mistresses on disc is an English dub of a French release cut with a surprising amount of nudity for a 1964 film as the monster ogles and strangles strippers. These scenes (one is still in French) are a little wobblier than the rest of the picture, as if spliced in from another source. Print quality is excellent, with lovely deep blacks. The packaging misspells the title as Dr Jeckyll's Mistresses. --Kim Newman

  • Pier Paolo Pasolini Vol.1Pier Paolo Pasolini Vol.1 | DVD | (26/02/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £39.99

A triple feature collection from revered Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini. Accatone (1961): Pasolini's first film is a painfully realistic study of a pimp in Rome. Vittorio Accattone has never worked a day in his life and has apparently made a good living prostituting his female companion Maddalena. But her arrest begins his decline; hungry he begs from churches and even visits his estranged wife and son. When Stella a lovely and unbelievably innocent peasant worker enters his life Accattone tries to find a way honest or not to bring back good fortune... RoGoPaG (Dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini Jean Luc Godard Ugo Gregoretti Roberto Rossellini 1963): RoGoPag is an anthology of four short films by a quartet of world-renowned directors. Roberto Rosselini's Illibatezza (Virginity) chronicles a beautiful Italian stewardess's efforts to dissuade a desperate American suitor despite his near-psychotic persistence. Pier Paolo Pasolini's controversial La Ricotta (Curd Cheese) takes an irony-laden look at the bizarre goings-on during a film shoot that aims to re-create the Biblical story of Jesus (starring Orson Welles as an incredibly pretentious director). Jean-Luc Godard's Il Nuevo Mondo (New World) equates the ending of a problematic love affair with a tragic nuclear holocaust. And finally Ugo Gregoretti's Il Pollo Ruspante (Range-Grown Chicken) takes a comedic - and tragic - look at the world of advertising as a young family treks into the country to contemplate buying a plot of land. With these shorts each director takes time to further explore the themes that permeate their feature-length works focusing on issues of religion jealousy and corporate influence in the early 1960s. Love Meetings (1965): Microphone in hand Pier Paolo Pasolini asks Italians to talk about sex: he asks children where babies come from young and old women if they are men's equals men and women if a woman's virginity matters how they view homosexuals how sex and honor connect if divorce should be legal and if they support closing the brothels (the Merlina Act). He periodically checks in with Alberto Moravia and Cesare Musatti. Bersani is intrusive and judgemental prodding those who answer. The film's thesis: despite the booming post-war economy Italians' attitudes toward sex are either rigidly Medieval (the poor and the South) or muddled and self-censoring (the bourgeoisie and the North).

With its stars bottom looming large on the cover, erotic adventure All Ladies Do It is clearly the work of Italian director Tinto Brass. It is another tale of a young woman and her quest to fulfil her sexual desires, in this case Claudia Kolls Diane, who embarks on a series of casual affairs much to the interest of husband Paul who, assuming that her tales are merely the product of an active imagination, finds himself aroused by their content. In the meantime, Diane is increasing her circle of lovers before a trip to Venice threatens to bring her dual life crashing down. The plot is frankly secondary to Brass appreciation of the female form (absolutely no opportunity is missed to focus on Kolls behind) and it all becomes a little ludicrous. The original Italian title ("Cosi fan tutte") is derived from Mozarts comic opera but, unlike the operas convoluted sexual politics, here there is only a rather confused attempt at expressing a quasi-feminist message about female independence. All Ladies Do It is best viewed as a piece of glossy titillation and nothing more. On the DVD: Brass certainly knows how to make the best of a location and there are some exceptionally beautiful shots of Venice to be found among the carnal adventures. The extras include a filmography and photo gallery as well as a low quality but telling interview with the director, during which he expounds on a rather strange theory regarding womens bottoms and the fact that, unlike their faces, they cannot lie. --Phil Udell

Long before the media's obsession with celebrity scaled its current heights, Maria Callas commanded headlines and column inches equal to any of the jet-setting elite of her time. In those terms alone, and much as opera purists might flinch at the idea, she was the Madonna of her day. But that is only one reason why her legend extends well beyond her place in the pantheon of great sopranos and so long after her death in 1977. An excellent companion to Tony Palmer's 1987 documentary La Divina, this documentary provides a well-rounded picture of an extraordinary talent who defended her art with the courage of a tigress, but whose turbulent private life gave her little except restless grief. It is crammed with concert footage and archive interviews. She was, as one of the contributors Franco Zeffirelli says, a genius of hair-raising stature and one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. But she was also a rather fragile human being. The tension between the two makes the telling of her story utterly compelling. The DVD includes chronologies of Callas' life and the many roles she played during her career. --Piers Ford
