  Let's be honest: this 1995 epic isn't nearly as bad as its negative publicity led us to expect. At the time it was the most expensive Hollywood production in history (it had a Titanic-sized $200 million budget), and the film arrived in cinemas with so much controversy and negative gossip that it was an easy target for ridicule. The movie itself, a flawed but enjoyable post-apocalypse thriller, deserves better. Waterworld stars Kevin Costner as the Mariner, a lone maverick with gills and webbed feet who navigates the endless seas of Earth after the complete melting of the polar ice caps. The Mariner has been caged like a criminal when he's freed by Helen (Jeanne Tripplehorn) and enlisted to help her and a young girl (Tina Majorino) escape from the Smokers, a group of renegade terrorists led by Dennis Hopper in yet another memorably villainous role. It is too bad the predictable script isn't more intelligent, but as a companion piece to The Road Warrior, this seafaring stunt-fest is adequately impressive. --Jeff Shannon

  1 Giant Leap is a unique project devised by Duncan Bridgeman and Jamie Catto (formerly of Faithless). It's a DVD accompaniment to an album that "fuses spoken word, musicians, sound, rhythms and images from all around the world". Subdivided into themes including "God: Blasphemy", "Inspiration", "Death" and "Happy", its aim is to explore and discover the "unity in diversity" and to this end, they profess to have assembled the "most happening musicians, authors, scientists and thinkers we could find" to offer their own thoughts interspersed with a river of eclectic ambient and world music along with images captured on their global travels. While the list of contributors does include Kurt Vonnegut and Brian Eno, whose contribution regarding olive trees is typically apposite and perfectly formed, one might wonder if the likes of Big Brother presenter Davina McCall and an ex-porn star really represent the vanguard of global thinking. The musical contributors include some artists seemingly past their sell-by date, such as Eddie Reader and Neneh Cherry, while the participation of Robbie Williams might make some groan. Furthermore, this sort of audio-visual imagery runs the danger of resembling the language of modern advertising, with its soothing, pan-global blandishments used to promote multinational industry. And yet, for all one's doubts, this project really does work. So often, ethnic music is drowned in bland, new-age "muzak" to make it palatable to Western ears. Here, it is heightened. A free-thinking, free-flowing context is provided in which all shine, including Michael Stipe and even Williams himself. This is a laudable project that demonstrates the possibility of working in margins unspoiled by commercialism is still alive. On the DVD: 1 Giant Leap on disc includes an accompanying booklet, amply packed with text and illustration. The 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound is particularly robust and bass-heavy.   Written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott, True Romance is hilarious, violent and strangely moving. It's part homage to Terence Malick's Badlands, part autobiography, part nerdy male fantasy--and it's Tarantino's first and, some say, finest work. Although it fared poorly at the box office at the time it soon became an established cult classic, with a supporting cast that beggars belief: Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, James Gandolfini, Val Kilmer, Dennis Hopper, Samuel L Jackson and Gary Oldman all play minor roles, all to devastating effect. Christian Slater stars as Clarence, the video-store clerk who's set up with Patricia Arquette's hooker Alabama on his birthday. They fall in love for real but have to hit the road when Clarence, egged on by the ghost of Elvis, kills Alabama's pimp Drexl (Oldman) and makes off with a consignment of neat cocaine, mistaking it for a suitcase of Alabama's clothes. Now both the police and the mafia are after them. Two among many great sequences stand out. The first is when cop Dennis Hopper, refusing to give up son Clarence to Christopher Walken's mafiosi, makes his famous "The Sicilians were spawned by niggers" speech. In context, it's actually not racist--it's a gesture of great courage and love from dad to son, while also calculated to mock the uptight racial sensibilities of the mafia. The second is when Alabama turns the tables on James Gandolfini's mafia henchman at the motel in a prolonged and brutal sequence which nonetheless emphasises the glowing, pink heart-shaped message at the centre of the film--that true love conquers all, albeit here in a hail of bullets that leaves practically everyone dead. On the DVD: True Romance is excellently reproduced on disc and there is an abundance of extras for this Special Edition. These include a number of mostly superfluous deleted and extended scenes, though the one in which Samuel L Jackson offers his views on the merits of "pussy-eating" is worth catching, as is the "alternate ending", which Tarantino had intended in his script. There is also access to the director's storyboards as well as commentaries from many of the cast, director Scott and from Tarantino himself, who, given his usual reluctance to provide such commentaries, is informative and chatty here. This is a superb package, although this "director's cut" is identical to the previous DVD edition. --David Stubbs
