Anyone can make themselves unpopular - but it takes a past master like John Cleese to be really irritating. The secret he says is to let the other person believe it's all totally unintentional - and that's the first of many tricks of the trade he gives away in How To Irritate People. With the help of fellow Python cohorts Michael Palin and Graham Chapman Connie Booth from Fawlty Towers and Goodie Tim Brooke-Taylor Cleese demonstrates the uncanny ability to keep his victims just the right temperature under the collar...one degree below boiling point! Recorded live in front of a thoroughly irritated audience and including the famed 'Airline Pilot' sketch How To Irritate People is a lesser known classic of British comedy.

Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft had been playing their respective roles as Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan, on Broadway for some time before director Arthur Penn (The Left-Handed Gun) built a mesmerisingly beautiful film around their layers-deep performances. Duke is astonishing as the deaf, blind, mute Keller, who awakens to an awareness of language under Sullivan's determined guidance. Bancroft is fascinating and focused. Penn wisely kept his adaptation unencumbered by cinematic indulgence. The black-and-white film is sparse and charged with the immediacy of the drama. The Miracle Worker's script is by William Gibson, who also wrote the original play. --Tom Keogh

  • Ice Cold In Alex [1958]Ice Cold In Alex | DVD | (18/04/2005) from £6.59   |  Saving you £7.40 (112.29%)   |  RRP £13.99

The title Ice Cold in Alex refers to the beer the heroes of this 1958 British World War Two classic plan to drink in Alexandria, once they have escaped from the Germans, negotiated minefields and survived both mechanical failure and the killing heat of the North African sands. The setting is Libya in 1942, at the height of the campaigns featured in The Desert Fox (1951) and The Desert Rats (1953), and a disparate group in a military ambulance--which include a Nazi agent to add tension of one kind and a beautiful nurse to add tension of another--must make an epic journey to safety. Staring John Mills, Sylvia Sims, Anthony Quayle and Harry Andrews the terror and poignancy comes from our certainty that not everyone will survive, such that the suspense sometimes reaches near unbearable levels. Director J Lee-Thomson was clearly inspired by the then recent French masterpiece, The Wages of Fear (1952) and handles both the character drama and set-pieces with great skill. He would go on to make another great war adventure, The Guns of Navarone (1961), also starring Anthony Quayle, who then returned to the desert for the ultimate British war classic, Lawrence of Arabia (1962). --Gary S. • Fierce Creatures [Blu-ray]Fierce Creatures | Blu Ray | (27/04/2015) from £7.99   |  Saving you £7.00 (87.61%)   |  RRP £14.99

In an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle, John Cleese wrote Fierce Creatures with the purpose of reuniting the comedic cast of A Fish Called Wanda. Media mogul (Kevin Kline) owns a London zoo. He demands that the park raise more profit, so the new zoo director (Cleese) orders that only dangerous animals be displayed in order to maximize ticket sales. In a dual role, Kline also plays the mogul's son, who plans to run the zoo with the help of displaced employees (including Michael Palin) and zoo programmer Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis). The situation lends itself to comedic confusion and split-second timing, and for a few good laughs the film is a pretty safe bet. It's not as hilarious as A Fish Called Wanda (that's a pretty tall order), but Cleese knows comedy, and his efforts are worth a look. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
