  Joan is a child when she has a violent and supernatural prophecy, before discovering her village being destroyed by the English army and her sister attacked and murdered before her very eyes. Her resolve overcomes the initial disbelief of those around her and despite being tormented by The Conscious (Dustin Hoffman) she is successful in forcing the English to retreat and Charles VII becomes the King of France. But when she asks for more reinforcements to take Paris, he refuses and conspires to allow her capture so as not to threaten his new position. Director Luc Besson (Leon, The Fifth Element) offers a bold portrayal of the religious martyrdom of Joan of Arc, now fully restored.

  Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is a big, fun, bubble-brained mess of a movie and that's exactly as it should be. Its popular 2000 predecessor got the formula right: gorgeous babes, throwaway plots and as many current pop-cultural trends as you could stuff into a candy-coated dollop of Hollywood mayhem. This sequel goes one "better": the plot is even more disposable (if that's possible), the babes, cars, and fashions are even more outlandish and the stuntwork (heavily digital, heavily absurd) reaches astonishing heights of cartoon silliness. Reprising their titular (and shamelessly titillating) roles, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu are having the time of their lives, especially when sparring with ultra-buff rogue angel Demi Moore (looking better at 40 than most women half her age) and Justin Theroux as a sleazy Irish mobster. Bernie Mac replaces Bill Murray as angel-sidekick Bosley (they're step-brothers, don'cha know), which is one more indication of McG's intentionally reckless stewardship of an intentionally reckless franchise. --Jeff Shannon

  John Wayne and Kirk Douglas make a delightful duo in this comedic Western in which Wayne seeks revenge on a ruthless mine owner (Bruce Cabot) who had him framed and sent to prison. Upon his release, Wayne recruits Douglas in a scheme to raid and rob one of Cabot's gold-laden wagons, despite the fact that Douglas had been offered good money to kill Wayne. He joins Wayne instead (the potential profits being much greater), and they set out to ambush the War Wagon, so named because it's heavily armored, mounted with a Gatling gun, and guarded by a dozen gunmen on horses. Costarring Keenan Wynn and Howard Keel as a wise-cracking Indian, The War Wagon was a Western precursor to the action buddy films of the 1980s and '90s, serving up plenty of exciting action and constant comic relief. The interplay between Wayne and Douglas is sharp and sarcastic, and their motley crew of accomplices provides yet another source of character-driven humour. Not one of the greatest Westerns ever made, but certainly one of the most lightly entertaining. --Jeff Shannon
