Director MARTIN SCORSESE (The Irishman) blends behind-the-scenes archival footage, interviews, and narrative mischief, with a magician's sleight of hand, into a zeitgeist-defining cultural record that is as much a concert documentary as it is a slippery, chimerical investigation into memory, time, truth, and illusion. | RRP Yes, that is Bill Paxton as Ilan Mitchell-Smith's militaristic big brother. And that's Robert Downey Jr. as one of the in-crowd jerks who makes nerds Mitchell-Smith and Hall's lives miserable. Fortunately, this is a John Hughes comedy and our smart nerds create the perfect woman, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), using a computer and voodoo. Lisa is a willing sex toy, has magical powers, and just wants to help the boys get even and meet nice babes. She even cleans up. The fantasy ebullience of Hughes is given full rein here and that's good and bad (mostly good). It's all aimed at a certain kind of hormone-addled, 16-year-old sensibility; but who doesn't have a little bit of that in them? --Keith Simanton

| RRP Daniel Kokotajlo's impressive follow-up to his award-winning Apostasy is a brilliant adaptation of Andrew Michael Hurley's acclaimed novel. In 1970s Yorkshire, Richard and Juliette relocate to Richard's childhood home, hoping the idyllic country surroundings will benefit their young son. However, a sudden tragic event drives a wedge through the family, which triggers Richard, an academic archaeologist, to bury himself in obsessively exploring a local folkloric myth. Kokotajlo's mysterious slow-burn folk horror feels tangibly of the moist Yorkshire earth, while evoking the spellbinding nature of great supernatural and occult horror films from the 70s. It is a wildly eerie piece, tightly stitched together with genuine chills and two bold, unflinching performances from Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark.Special Features¢ Presented in High Definition and Standard Definition¢ Newly recorded audio commentary by director Daniel Kokotajlo, production designer Francesca Massariol and sound designer Ben Baird¢ Newly recorded interview with composer Matthew Herbert (2024) ¢ Newly recorded interview with author Andrew Michael Hurley (2024, 20 mins) ¢ Interviews with stars Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark (2023, 10 mins)¢ Interview with the Hare Team' (2023, 19 mins): creature effects supervisor Sharna Rothwell and lead puppeteer Aidan Cook discuss their work ¢ Behind-the-scenes footage (2023, 5 mins)¢ Deleted scene (2023, 1 min) ¢ Actor Sean Gilder reads The Hare, a folk song' from the original Starve Acre novel by Andrew Michael Hurley (2024, 1 min, audio), accompanied by a selection of stills from the film ¢ Image galleries¢ Theatrical trailer¢ Newly created audio description track for the blind and visually impaired¢ Newly created optional English descriptive subtitles ¢ **FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Illustrated booklet featuring new writing on the film by Professor Catherine Spooner, new writing on contemporary folk horror by Dr Adam Scovell and a text by director Daniel Kokotajlo

Southern Comfort | DVD | (15/01/2001)
from £23.92

| RRP Southern Comfort is more than merely Deliverance in the Louisiana Bayou. Walter Hill's taut little tale of weekend warrior National Guardsman on swamp exercises reverberates with echoes of Vietnam. Powers Booth brings a hard pragmatism to the "new guy" in the unit, a Texas transplant less than thrilled with his new unit. "They're just Louisiana versions of the same rednecks I served with in El Paso", he tells level-headed Keith Carradine. The barely functional unit of city boys and macho rednecks invade the environs of the local Cajun trappers and poachers, "borrowing" the locals' boats and sending bursts of blank rounds over their heads in a show of contempt. Before they know it the dysfunctional strangers in a strange land are on the losing end of guerrilla war. The swamp rats kill their commanding officer (Peter Coyote) and terrorise the bickering bunch as they flee blindly through the jungle without a map, a compass, or a leader to speak of. Hill directs with a clean simplicity, creating tension as much from the primal landscape and the Cajuns' unsettling reign of terror as from the dynamics of a platoon of battle virgins tearing itself apart from rage and fear. Ry Cooder's eerie and haunting score and the primal, claustrophobic landscape only intensifies the paranoia as the city boys splinter with infighting (sparked by a bullying Fred Ward), blunder through booby traps and ambushes, and finally turn just as savage as their pursuers in their drive to survive. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
