The television broadcast from Vienna of the New Years Day concert has attracted to the podium across the past 40 years or so a number of starry conductors, but none more so than Carlos Kleiber, that elusive maestro who in some respects represents the antithesis of the late-20th century model (consider his slim discography). In this 1989 concert he brings to life the music of the Strauss family in an extraordinarily vital manner. Caught on film under the vigilant eye of director Brian Large, Kleiber, with an economical set of gestures including a seemingly extended left arm that sends the music winging on its way, has the Vienna Philharmonic strings giving off a lustrous shine unique even by their standards, while the brass (trumpets and horns) ring out with an Alpine freshness that sends a tingle down the spine of the listener. The programme blends firm favourites such as the waltzes--Accelerations, The Blue Danube and Artists Life--with less-often played pieces such as the The Dragonfly polka where Kleibers arm at one moment seems to be drawing the insects flight-path. Theres one break from tradition in that there is no dancing in this film. Brian Large knows the music inside out, providing close-ups at key moments such as the lovingly shaped introduction to the Artists Life waltz, which begins with a breathtakingly played account of the opening tune on oboe. The orchestra, in morning dress, join in with song during At Home with Us. Play this at the end of a weary day and be transported to another world of unadulterated musical luxury. On the DVD: there are no extra features, just a set of advertisements for current Deutsche Grammophon DVDs including Kleibers own Der Rosenkavalier. --Adrian Edwards
It's an all-star DJ line-up that would have cost hundreds of thousands of pounds in its heyday...assembled here for One More celebration. Clubland heavyweights Jeremy Healy, Brandon Block, Graeme Park, Danny Rampling, Norman Cook, Tall Paul, Allister Whitehead, Mark Moore, Sonique, Nicky Holloway and Radio One stalwarts Judge Jules Jules and Dave Pearce, plus many more, dot the 'I's and cross the 'T's on two decades of 'aving 'IT'.We hear from their paymasters too, the promoters of iconic club brands and venues like Renaissance, Hacienda, Venus, Golden, Gatecrasher, Miss Moneypenny's, Trip & Sin, Progess, Turnmills, Wobble, Colours, The Escape Club, The Hippo Club and Lamerica. Fuelled by revolutionary party drug ecstasy, this historic era of UK clubbing changed the lives of millions.Nearly two years in the making, packed with previously unseen archive footage and set to a seminal soundtrack from a pioneering generation, this intriguing documentary quizzes the people who made it all possible. We ask why and how it happened, discuss what brought about the scene's decline, and then pose the unenviable question - If tonight was your last ever gig, what would be your One More track?

In 1997 Christoph von Dohnányi was appointed Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. In Rehearsal is an unflashy but riveting documentary, made in the Royal Festival Hall in 1998, that follows his first experiences of working on Haydn's music with the ensemble. It includes substantial rehearsal footage, his comments on the piece (Symphony No. 88, nicknamed The Bagpipe), and interviews with some of the orchestra's principal players. It will undoubtedly be compulsory viewing for aspiring conductors, but it also makes fascinating watching for anyone who has ever gained pleasure from listening to an orchestra perform. Dohnányi's rehearsal technique is laid bare: his phenomenal attention to the smallest details of phrasing and articulation, his rather severe manner lightened by the occasional pleasantry and his uncanny precision in the matter of wind tuning. (It is fascinating to note that when he joins in with a melody, he hardly ever sings in tune himself.) The changes he creates are startling: in the famous "bagpipe" sequence he transforms the sound from a commonplace into something startling and ear-bending simply by shading the strings down and foregrounding the bassoons. His general comments on the art of conducting and its foundation in human trust are also engrossing. All told this is serious, informative and thought-provoking--and highly recommended. On the DVD: Christoph von Dohnányi in Rehearsal comes equipped with subtitles in French, German and Spanish. Picture is standard 4:3 and sound basic PCM stereo. The disc also contains trailers for three other Arthaus DVDs. --Warwick Thomson
